  1. If it doesn't look like it's healing within a couple of days I would have a vet take a look at it.
  2. How is she getting away with this and what kind of fools are donating money to her?
  3. Agree that anxious or fearful dog will not take treats. I've always flown in the face of 'experts' who say not to comfort a stressed and anxious dog. Every one of my rescue Rottweilers were a terrified shaking, panting mess when there was a thunder storm. I would sit down with my body touching theirs and calmly stroke them from head to tail while speaking softly, to reassure them. Without fail this would result in the dog stopping their shaking and calming down. Strangely none of my own dogs have ever been fearful of thunder storms. I wonder why that is.
  4. I'm quite happy about people crossing the road with their dog when they see me coming. I figure their dog has a problem. I usually just give them a wave and call out 'thank you'. They usually wave back and give me the thumbs up, (not the finger).
  5. My Cavalier is not a service dog but he certainly assists by alerting me. I'm becoming hard of hearing in my dotage. My Cavalier will come and get me wherever I am in the house or yard if I don't hear the phone ringing, ditto the door bell. He will come to me and bark and run off, making sure I'm following him. If I don't follow he'll come back to me and bark again until I do follow. The minute I follow there is no more barking but he keeps looking back to make sure I'm there. He goes to the phone and stands there until I arrive, ditto when the door bell rings. He also uses his skill to have me follow him when he sees fit to dob in in my other Cavalier if she's doing something he thinks is wrong. I wouldn't put a fake service dog vest on him because I don't need to take him wherever I go and he hasn't been trained by a legit organisation. It's just something he picked up on his own. He would probably be quick to train as a legit service dog if I needed one.
  6. I had two Rottweilers and two Cavalier KC Spaniels. I did two walks every morning, taking one Rottie and one Cavalier on each walk. Strangely, no one ever crossed the street the way they would do if I was walking a Rottweiler on its own. People would come up to us and say how nice it was to see a large breed and a small breed walking so nicely together. They had no fear of a Rottie walking with a Cavalier.
  7. Where are you walking him early in the morning that there are so many people around? I walk my dogs reasonably early in the morning and rarely do I see another person. If I do it's someone also out walking their dog and we simply exchange a polite 'Good Morning' and keep walking. Where are you finding all these middle aged women with fluffy dogs and mothers with kids at that hour of the morning? Ignore people who make stupid comments because they're are afraid of big dogs. They're showing there ignorance. Find an area to walk your dog where there is less people traffic. When I was walking my well behaved Rottweiler I would occasionally get good natured comments such as 'who is walking whom' because I'm short and of slight build and I was walking a large dog. I'm surprised you meet with so many people early in the morning. Simply ignore negative comments and those people who are terrified enough to clutch their dog to their breast when they see a large dog. They don't know any better.
  8. How would a vet know whether or not people are treating their pet like a child and dragging them everywhere, treating them like a human etc.,?
  9. Though my dogs sit on the floor between my legs, I don't have an issue with dogs sitting on seats in the vets waiting room as long as there are empty chairs for people to sit on.
  10. That is probably the most beautiful, heart rending tribute I've ever seen. What special owners Phoebe had.
  11. You haven't done any damage by clipping. The hair grows from follicles deep in the layers of the skin. Clipping only chops it off on the surface & cannot affect the follicles or growth at all. If you like it clipped & find it easier then clip it. Of course it will be cooler. I scissor trim my cavs and when they go to the groomers they also get a scissor trim but what you are saying sort of makes sense to me. My hair doesn't change in texture when it's cut short, why would my dogs hair change in texture? My son had long hair and had a buzz cut, when it grew the texture was no different to the way it had been before the buzz cut. I understand that the hair may not sit or lie the same way after clipping but that doesn't change the texture of the hair.
  12. I'm inclined to agree with Anne. I don't like the sound of the red mark either. Where abouts exactly is the red mark? It's not nothing, it's something and it shouldn't be there. I still think you need a specialst vet to take over the care of your dog. You're not getting very far with your local vet.
  13. It might be a good idea to ask the vet for a referral to a canine internal medicine specialist. I suspect whatever is wrong with her is causing the problem with the eyes rather than the eyes causing the problem with her digestive system.
  14. So beautiful. Congratulations to Wiz and Huski.
  15. My son will be bringing home his Mini Schnauzer in a few days and is looking for a good vet in the Northcote area. Anyone know of a good vet in that area or surrounds?
  16. I would give the Capstar a run. It's always worked for me with my rescue dogs. I put all dogs on Sentinel Spectrum. I've been using it for years and have never had a dog with fleas or worms.
  17. Oh, just look at that baby fluff ball. Steve, I love what you do. I couldn't do it and I dip my lid to the wonderful dedicated breeders who produce the pups we take home to love, train and care for. Without people like you there wouldn't be people like me who have totally fallen in love with dogs. There are many of us thanks to ethical, registered breeders. Did someone ask for more pics of baby fluff balls? I second the request.
  18. I had to ring a very well known internet company to assist me to activate a program I'd installed on my computer that refused activate for me. He activated it but then started exactly with the same harassment and in the same way as has been mentioned here. He had access to my computer at the time and began by telling me I had serious computer issues and brought up many pages of what he referred to were Microsoft errors on my 'puter. I was sure what he was showing me had nothing to do with my computer. He told me if I took my 'puter to be 'repaired' to a qualified service person it would cost me in excess of $400 wheras if I gave him my credit card details he could do it on the spot for $199. I resisted and he followed with "for you I'll do it for $169". He advised that my computer would crash very soon. I continued to resist and he became very aggressive and kept repeating "Mastercard or Visa" in an aggressive manner. I told him I wasn't buying and advised that I was going to hang up the phone and I did so. Since he had access to my computer I watched him delete everything he had typed in the course of our conversation. I emailed the company to report his aggressive attitude. As the telephone call was recorded I gave the company my number and advised them of the time of the call. They said they would listen to the recorded call and take action but could not advise me of the result. Three months later my computer is still working perfectly. It didn't crash and I don't have the hundreds of errors or viruses that he assured me I would have if I didn't give him my credit card details immediately. He assued me if I did not give him my cc details I would have serious problems. I will happily give anyone the name of this well known computer company by PM. I am also happy to reveal which well known internet program I was installing. I don't think Troy would be happy if I mentioned it on here. I am quite sure this guy is one who is harassing people by phone. His modus operandi was as everyone has been describing. Edited to say I am elderly and to identify myself to him so he could check that I was indeed who I said I was he knew I am elderly so he thought he had a sure thing on the other end of the line.
  19. Best thing to do is call whichever insurance company you choose and ask them.
  20. Do they ask for credit card details and the password? How did they go about cleaning out the elderly lady's bank account. I think if they called me I wouldn't be able to resist leading them on.
  21. It sounds very strange to me. I don't believe a word of the father's story.
  22. This thread is good. It's prompted me to make another donation to Lort Smith. They do great work. My son fostered a lovely GSD for them.
  23. Lort Smith are a lot more than just a veterinary hospital. They offer low cost vet services for those on low incomes. They also take in surrendered dogs whose owners can no longer care for. Lort Smith finds homes for these dogs. They will board dogs for people who are in difficult circumstances e.g. temporarily homeless and they take excellent care of the dogs. The dogs are not just put in the kennels and ignored. They have plenty of human contact and they are exercised. The money has to come from somewhere to pay for all these low cost, and in some instances no cost services. They are very worthy of donations.
  24. Yes. While the post is still there people may accept that Lort Smith are not worthy of a donation. Not everyone reads all replies in a thread. My son who is a RN decided he would like to work with animals for a while. He put in some time working for Lort Smith as a vet nurse. He is experienced with dogs and was impressed with Lort Smith and said they do a great job, both in the Hospital and with the dogs in the kennels awaiting a home. He donates to Lort Smith.
