  1. To be honest all puppies are darn cute no matter what the breed. For me I love fluffy puppies the best. They look like little bears. Here's some Belgian puppy pics for you all to swoon over:
  2. And that would make him iron out nicely had I sprayed said flys preen. :D Thanks DA for photos and commentary. I loved it.
  3. Yep forgot to mention it's a fault in the Belgians too (rear dews) but I'd remove them even if it wasn't. :D
  4. Argh, another ridiculous law! :D If they introduce this in Tasmania I will stop breeding. We only remove rear dew claws as we've had very little trouble with the front ones. Mine actually use front dew claws for holding onto things like bones/toys etc. Some Belgians are born without rear due claws anyway which is handy. Rear dew claws are always clipped off at about day 3 but I like Steve's idea of doing them at birth. I just need to learn to do them as up until now we've always had a experienced gun dog man come over and do them. Vets charge way too much and don't do as good a job unfortunately. There is no way I'm taking a 3 day litter of pups over to the vets unless I absolutely have to. :D They are removed to avoid injury.
  5. Karaoke???? Its supposed to be a posh do :D but Ill think about it. I can make Karaoke posh. After midnight is when it all happens. VERY classy, I assure you. I'm sure you and I could make a very good go at making it very posh.
  6. Hopefully this will make your eyes feel better. Wow!
  7. Who was loud? Yes, it was a good day and we did have lots of fun. Laughing is he best medicine. That would be so much fun. Wish it wasn't so pricey to fly dogs over.
  8. I just found this thread after being told all about it at Dogfest yesterday. I always miss the fun. I was entered but wasn't well enough to come to royals and so I missed out. Dogfest was fun though. Well Dogfest was interesting... I managed to end up married to Mr Rajacadoo doo doo and towards he end of the day I magically became one of their children. Allerzeit, I did go looking for you at dogfest yesterday until Rajacadoo told me you wouldn't be there. We keep missing each other. I would love to finally put a face to the name. Are you going to Huonville? You should definitely come for a visit to Tassie, if you can fit it in with a dog show we can each bring a plate of something and various alcoholic substances and make a day of it.
  9. Yep, I second that. Made me when I found out.
  10. I was so happy when I heard this news. You know how I feel about this JJ so need I say anymore? I think my text message was graphic enough and not at all suitable for putting on here. CONGRATULATIONS guys. It had to be a Pokey baby didn't it?
  11. Hey there JJ, David is the guy that did Shadow for me all those years ago. He had a great raport with him and Shadow wasn't at all fussed by the manipulation and he was really very cheap. He travels down to Hobart so if you ring him you can tee up a time when he is here and meet him him somewhere. This is what I did when he did Shadow for me. I was hoping someone would come in here and give out his details as I'd misplaced his number otherwise I would've given it to you myself.
  12. It's a question that can have many answers and way too generic. Some years back I rescued a Malioins that the owners labelled as an 'escape artist' that no matter what they did she would always run away. So she spent most of her life chained in their back yard. She had no shelter and was not handled very much. The first day she was with me she growled whenever she came near me. She would completely loose it with fear whenever I picked up something that had a cord coming from it. Sudden movements would petrify her. She was like this for about 2 weeks and I was starting to wonder if this was going to be life with her. The one thing she never did though was try to escape which was the main reason why her original home wanted to be rid of her. Then one day she just snapped and all of a sudden she became incredibly affectionate and loving. She was a little anxious around strangers but with time she learned to trust. She loved my kids and ran well with all my other Belgians. When she left here her new home couldn't believe that she had ever had these problems. Another situation was one of my home bred Belgians. Her owner was had her for around 12 months before she started to show sign's of 'seperation anxiety' it escalated to the point where the neighbours had complained and the council had visited her and the Real Estate Agents (she rented) had given here an notice of eviction if she couldn't fix the problem. In the end and at her whits end she asked for me to take the dog back. I re-homed her and the new owners have never had this pronblem with her. She is perfect in every way. So sometimes even though you may think you may be doing all the right things with a particular dog it could be something that you are doing unintentionally that is causing the problem. I've seen many dogs that have been accused of acting a certain way only to change as soon as its environment has been changed.

  14. I would normally agree but the dog really looked like it was having fun and that is the reason why I enjoyed it so much.
  15. That is the irony Christina but unfortunately probably quite true.
  16. As the title says, you've got to see this. Dog dancing the Salsa
  17. Which brand is this? Sorry BL, I'm looking for a Hydrobath at the moment and rather than start a new thread I thought I'd share yours if that's OK?
  18. I really enjoyed watching it. I was so proud to see a Belgian Shepherd (Malinois) or two in there as well.
  19. Can someone share a link to the segment? I don't want to have to go through all 8 pages to find it.
  20. You know by me replying people will be coming in here thinking that there are a few results. I was wondering if you'd get the JJ bit. You know we call you that when we are talking about you in this house.
  21. Years ago I travelled up to NSW to do a few shows with one of my Belgians. He was 14 months old then so it would've been about 8 years ago. I was at a country show and I entered the ring with my boy and his breeder was behind me with one of her dogs. We kept a lot of distance between us as the two boys detested each other. The judge noticed this and asked us to stack the boys facing each other (obvisouly within a safe distance) as she wanted to see them reacting towards each other. I remember at the time both boys had hackles raised and were growling at each other. Both dogs were perfectly stacked though and weren't attempting to lunge and the judge just loved watching them reacting to each other. I was a reasonably new exhibitor at the time and so didn't question this, to this day I have no idea why the judge wanted to see this.
  22. for some it can work - but pounds, rescues and advertisements are full of those who dont. So did I. It was a long haul and a huge learning curve for me with my first Belgian but fortunately it worked out and I didn't completely ruin my dog BUT it could've just as easily gone the other way.
  23. I mentioned this earlier in the thread and I completely agree with this statement.
  24. This is the case for belgians. Only one size, I admit, but four coat types. From what I understand some countries let the varieties interbreed freely, some not at all, & some only with special permission. Especially in the countries where you can interbreed, you apparently do get malinois popping up in tervuerens litters, tervuerens popping up in groenendael litters, as well as strange combinations like black malinois & laekenois. True, and the same with some other breeds (hairless and powderpuff chinese crested dogs for example) but the variation in litters not to the extreme of the labradoodle IMO. And with belgians being a working breed I'd think that given the right circumstances, interbreeding is acceptable? (as in you're breeding for working ability of the dogs rather than looks) - plus you're not going to get 3 standard Tervuerens, 2 medium Malinois and 3 mini groenendael in a Belgian litter :D Some of the litters listed on the ALA site have for example: COAT TYPES :: Fleece and Wool SIZE :: Miniature to Medium while others have size listed as standard/large or miniature/large miniature along with one or two types of coats, along with mulitudes of different colours and patterns. It seems like a lot of variation.. LOL, mini groenendaels would be funny! I think they're allowed to interbreed here in the varieties with small gene pools, but only certain combinations, e.g. mally & laekenois is allowed, but laekenois & groenendael is not allowed (in case you end up with black curlies). Not sure that the WL mally would benefit from having any other variety introduced, but in general I'm a big fan of allowing inter-variety breeding in sensible combinations. Sorry a little here. Up until a few years ago we used to be able to intervariety breed Belgians but only between the following combinations: Groenendael x Tervueren Tervueren x Malinois Malinois x Laekenois Now intervariety breeding is prohibited in Australia UNLESS the mating is approved by the ANKC. This can be done by preparing a submission at least 6 months prior to the proposed mating giving reasons why the proposed mating would be of benefit to the breed. For the rarer variety like the Laekenois such a case would be easier to prove than the more common varieties such as the Groenendael and Tervuerens.
