  1. You're right, I don't. I don't either. Honestly, making people keep up to date with and pay multiple registrations and memberships every year (ANKC, MDBA, Council, any others that get invented...) doesn't preclude them from doing the wrong thing. It just makes life difficult for people who make sure they always do the right thing. I don't know what the simple answer is, if there is one. But punishing the honest people through additional fees and paperwok isn't it. YOU got that in ONe. Well said
  2. That is assuming they are smart enough to do so. Many don't want to read pages of codes of ethics, they just want a pup.
  3. Good idea but you also have to remember that part of your code of ethics is I shall refrain from making negative or malicious statements about other breeder's, their dogs or practices - so Im sure its not just because you might be sued. Well that is just a way of shutting the good people up. It is the same in the Law Society. If you say something bad about another lawyer you are made to be silent as legal practitioners are not supposed to say anything that could bring the profession into DISREPUTE. Never mind the fact that a lawyer/legal practitioner could be actually DOING THE WRONG thing. We just must not talk about it. How very uncivilized to do so!!!
  4. And very disappointing that the other thread I started got pulled as it had some good information in it. A shame a couple of the helpful posters aren't commenting in this one. Not sure why.
  5. Well, to be fair, I don't either. I think your breeders are probably all great, but I've also met some great breeders who aren't MDBA members, and I wouldn't personally restrict my search for a dog to MDBA members (or to kennel club breeders, for that matter). Thats interesting - where else would you look for a good breeder? THAT is the number one question!!! Where do you go?? It is so confusing to the general public. I am a well-educated person and it is very confusing, so the average punter would have no idea.
  6. Good on you Raz. Wish I could get up that early. 6.30am is very early for me. I tend to stay up late at night.
  7. I have rung heaps of PP's and the staff always say "breeders". The last one I rang she breeders and I said "what breeders?" and she said she could not tell me because of "breeder discretion" I think it is great that people are trying to come up with ideas to solve the problem but I do agree with previous poster who said that some people do not care about the conditions of the mothers as long as they end up with a cute pup. It is a selfish society we live in and the attitude makes me sick.
  8. Bloody hell. I would definitely be phoning vet for advice on this one!!! Some foods/drugs for humans can be fatal for dogs and cats!
  9. Agree with this. Also think that never walking them or giving them stimulation makes them territorial and can lead to aggression.
  10. Here is one I saw some time ago relating to I-phones. (I-phone 4) Pretty funny when watched when they first came out. PS - I laughed even though I love my MAC! And am a MAC person.
  11. ha ha ha That was funny I do a lot of photography and people ARE like that!
  12. The other thing is make sure you do this when your dogs are not around. I do all the snail baiting when cats are locked up and they can't see what I am doing. Also the baits are in a box and the sound of baits is similar to cat food box sound so VERY IMPORTANT to do this when no animals around. Then I watch the cats and they go and check out the milk bottle baits. The smell of beer is strong and they can't get heads in and they sniff a bit and not interested. My cats and I know dogs are often interested in what you are doing and might investigate so all sorts of "dangerous" stuff I do when they are not around and then watch them when they first see the milk bottles. Cats completely ignore the bottles now and if a stinky dead snail smell comes from the bottles, who can blame them.
  13. HI I have not read all replies but I have the same problem and I have cats. I get the 1 litre milk bottles and cut the top off and then put beer in and also the baits. The entrance is not big enough for cats to get head in. Bury the milk bottle in a bit of dirt so snail does not have to slide over sharp side. IT WORKS!!! I have caught over 70 snails this way and you can just chuck the whole milk bottle. Don't let it sit in the sun for too long. I did this and the SMELL. Had me dry reaching for 5 mins. the worst smell you can imagine!
  14. Thanks very much for all replies. The owner rang last night and I told her my concerns. She told me he does not chase her car, only other peoples cars. She told me she "smacked" him when she chased her car and therefore he does not do it any more. She told me she does not get many visitors and when she does she holds him back (she did this with me). When she said she "smacked" him I immediately said I do not believe in hitting dogs at all, especially as this one was a shelter dog which had been beaten. She told me this. You can always tell if you move your hand or arm too fast and the dog cringes. It is very sad to see dogs react this way. So I will give her all suggestions when she gets back. I took lots of photos of her dog and cat so will send her the info when I post off the photos to her. I was wondering if anyone had an information sheet or anything like that I could enclose and send to her. (she told me she does not use computers or the internet so it will have to be hardcopy)
  15. Sometimes you have to be (a little bit) cruel to be kind.
  16. Honestly, you would be surprised how many people have animals but are so incredibly ignorant of their needs or how to fix behaviours. This is a really lovely English lady. I am sure she will be receptive to what I suggest for her Border Collie Some people infuriate me with the way they "look after" or care for their animals. EG - one client had a black fluffy kitten. She complained to me that the kitten was pooing and weeing all over the house. So where was the kitty litter??? and where was the kitten fed??? In the laundry. Now this woman had 3 young kids. The washing machine and dryer were often used and the laundry was a thoughfare to the back yard. So I tried to explain in a note I left her that while I looked after the kitten and put the kitty litter in a QUIET place - there were NO PROBLEMS. Kitty used the litter tray!!! It pisses me off no end when stupid people with no common sense blame their animals for POOR decisions they make. GRRRRR
  17. You have done a great job of this. A lovely collection of photos to remember your special boy.
  18. I did not see the show but it is a very unprofessional show in my opinion. Right up there with Bondi Vet. Urgh! What annoys me is the stories of cats/kittens being rescued from the tops of trees/telegraph poles etc. Oh joy oh joy. Fluffy is now safe and is no longer trapped up the tree - too frightened to come down. Not once have I seen anything at the end which states that cats should be CONTAINED and not left to roam all over the place or suitable ways to keep cats in. GRRRRRR
  19. Thanks to last two replies. I think I will have a big talk to the owner about this. When I went and met the dog, she held him to stop chasing. Then when I was leaving after first visit dog was chasing car. it was very very bad. I was so scared I was going to run over him. Now I park outside of "zap" area. He has one of those electric collars to keep him in a certain area. He has a large area. Before she got the collar he used to go wandering all over the place. From time to time I see things that are problematic and I try and rectify when I can. I will point out that this behaviour is potentially fatal for the dog. I think the professional trainer and e-collar will work for this client. I would hate to see the dog hurt or killed.
  20. Hi A new client who I am doing pet sitting for has an 8 year old Border Collie who chases cars. It really bothers me and first time I had to drive out of the property I was worried about running over the dog. Now I park in a spot where the dog can't chase the car when I leave. I grew up on large properties in outback NSW and remember a lot of dogs used to chase the car wheels. I remember the "training" back then (30 years ago) was to tip a bucket of freezing cold water on the dog and some people got results doing this. I was wondering if someone could suggest something so I could let the owner know. Also "Cody" was a pound dog she got at about 3 years of age. Not sure what sort of life he had before that. Seems to a bit of "herding" training. Any suggestions. Thank you.
  21. Sorry I missed this thread. Merry Belated Christmas Troy and the rest of the DOL team and of course to all our wonderful furkids. Have a Happy New Year as well. At least I am not late on that!
