  1. Definitely. I've seen her happily chew on far more revolting things than out of date meat, including dead things and old bones she's dug up. I obviously wouldn't give her some maggot infested, rotting lump but.. you know ;)
  2. What a beautiful old dog - you gave her the greatest gift, I am so glad that there are such generous people as you in the world. RIP Mushi
  3. I'm not sure of any actual trainers in that area, but I go to Northern Obedience Dog Club in Moonee Ponds, with my little girl. I've also had her for a few months, and she had also had no lead or other training, and was really timid. I've found this obedience club great so far, and actually wish I'd started taking her sooner. The first classes are all about walking nicely on the lead/heeling, sitting, dropping, and starting on-lead recall. We're only in level 2 now but I've learnt so much in my time going there, and have probably benefited from it more than my dog has. She picks everything up really quickly, I'm the problem in our little partnership haha. All of the trainers have personal views about choke chains, but as far as I've been able to tell, none are keen on haltis for the reason you mentioned. I use a normal collar with my dog and would refuse to use a choke chain if suggested anyway.. I know it's not what you asked for, but I figure there's no harm in suggestions!
  4. Totally. Looks can be deceiving! One of mine is a little energiser bunny, and the obstacles mentioned I guarantee would be no obstacle at all. They're also good at navigating around things and spotting paths that don't appear to be appropriate for human travelling :D
  5. Argh he is so gorgeous! I have a sock monster toy poodle too - she's never destroyed anything, but god, she'll find socks no matter how well you hide them. The smellier the better!
  6. Such a cutie! Puppy breath and little feet untouched by pavement <3 Gorgeous gorgeous!!
  7. That is one hell of a good looking dog...
  8. The Italian Greyhound one is brilliant.
  9. I completely agree with you, especially on these points. When I first read this news I was mortified and so angry that I actually walked away from the computer fuming. But having actually processed it, I think the outcome perhaps isn't so bad. I am disgusted by the decision, but think that a monitored puppy farm that already has 1,000+ objectors is a far better outcome than an undercover one that is hushed up. Baby steps - it's a yucky step, but a step in the right direction, I think.
  10. Damn, wish my council offered a concession rate for DogsVic members! Or that I knew about it when I registered :D
  11. Yeah, your best guess is trying to determine the breeds that form the mix and looking at their estimated sizes. This is all you can really do if you didn't get to see the parents. And if you did, you may get a bigger dog than them anyway, depending on their parents. That's probably not that helpful, but .. I don't think anyone can really be any more helpful than that!
  12. Yep, we've got a little square eyed dog here too. She also tries to find the puppies whenever there are little baby animals crying etc, on TV. Runs behind the TV, tries to get under it, etc, to try and find them. very cute!
  13. Do you mean that your council gives a discount (for council registration) for dogs registered with Dogs Victoria?
  14. God, so sorry to hear of that outcome GSDowner - I wish I could be more helpful than just sending good vibes. Good on you for acting as quickly as you did though. Hope everything picks up for you guys!
  15. He's gorgeous! Something about his face makes me think he's got some sort of JRT/Mini Foxie or something in him, along with BC and Cattle Dog, with that colouring?
  16. that's the best dog ever! I'm at work so watched without sound, and it looks like he's going "YAY YAY YAY" as he jumps!
  17. I had a couple go all gooey on me the other morning, when I was out walking my dog and our next door neighbour's came out and they started rubbing against each other. This couple were coming towards us and slowed down to await the hiss/bark/altercation, and started gushing when they started being all affectionate instead
  18. so so sorry for your loss, I can't even imagine what you are going through, to have lost her at such a young age. RIP Cindy.
  19. Wow, she looks so good now! From that pic at least, you wouldn't even know anything had ever happened to her, BMAK you did a brilliant job
  20. I know a woman from another forum who runs In My Home Dog Minding, which is exactly that, really. Not sure of her availability at the moment but perhaps give her a call? I've got no idea about NSW geography, but they are in Hawkesbury.. ?
  21. What a horrible story, so sorry for your poor niece! Life's just not fair
  22. Argh, if I had a dollar for the number of times someone has told me about their hyper-allergenic dog! And reassured me that XX breed would be fine for me, that their dog doesn't shed etc I'm allergic to dogs (and cats, horses, wombats, blah blah, everything with fur, basically) and am only ok with poodles and some poodle crosses. Even my mum's poodle x maltese gives me hayfever and asthma. He doesn't shed, has curly fur, but nup, couldn't live with him. I personally have different symptoms from some dogs - eg, labrador and golden retriever saliva gives me hives, but I haven't experienced this from (m)any other breeds. And the dogs that most affect me seem to be JRT type. Obviously these things are just based on my own personal experiences, and I've had more experience with some breeds than others. I've heard and read many things about what exactly I'm allergic to - I had rounds and rounds of allergy shots when I was younger too, none of which helped much, if at all. I'm fine with poodles though (thank god), and as long as I can at least have poodles life is worth living!! I'd love to know more about what the difference is between poodles and other dogs though. There must be something additional to the saliva, that can cause allergic reactions.
  23. I had a foster greyhound who did this too, but at the age of 3. Argh it was so annoying! I ended up raising his bowl even higher because he'd just run water through the house, and his water would get all muddy and end up with sticks and leaves etc all in it, 2 seconds after changing it. For him though, it didn't seem like play - he had been living in kennels for ages before coming to live with me (his first time in a house) and I assumed it was something he'd picked up there, perhaps to.. I don't know.. remove crud from the water surface?
  24. Not sure about the protocols on naming vets, but surely if it's only positive feedback there's nothing wrong with it? I'm really interested in knowing who it was - while I'm really happy with my current vet, it's nice to have options in the event that something happened (I'm in Melbourne too)
  25. It's a step in the right direction. It shows that these laws will be applied to people selling dogs, which sets a precedent. Once you have a precedent, it's less trouble to actually enforce these laws.
