Help- Ramses Over Ate...have A Few Questions
blacklabrador replied to spoilt lab lives here's topic in General Dog Discussion
Spoilt he will be very thirsty and gulp water if you give him access to it. When this has happened with my dogs (okay with T BONE the bloody food stealing vacuum) I have limited his water intake - making sure he has no access to toilets either as his water seeking behaviour increases. I give him about half a cup of water regularly so he's staying hydrated but not filling his tummy and increasing his chances of bloat. I also keep him very quiet - usually crated and I have him sleeping in close vicinity so I will be woken if he starts to try to vomit. There's no way I'd have him outside in a kennel as I would miss the warning signs of bloat. Once the extremely stinky farts start he gets kicked out to the other end of the house where I can still hear him but not smell him. -
:D Nice Ashanali! Oh I wish I lived up there, you could have some Pointee photos- although with Ashanali around you may already have some. Nope can't take the pointees. I can't risk having any of mine out and about mixing with other dogs when I'm due to have small puppies at home soon :D I would have loved to include Ronin in the shoot otherwise. If a pointer is needed then Dashby would be more than willing to participate. He fancies himself as a bit of a lad. I'd love to come down anyway - can we have a play in the park afterwards?? ETA I mean can the dogs play in the park afterwards.... not me. :D

Nobody is suggesting that she isn't supervised but perhaps that her owner stops hovering anxiously and taking her off to the vet for internals every day. It's enough to prevent labour from happening. A bitch can be left to her own devices and still supervised from non-intrusive distance.

Hi there. No news. Nothing happening as yet, no discharge, no contractions. I called the vet yet again and he said give it to tomorrow as her dates are still ok we think going by measurements on the ultrasound. Pearl looks well and is eating. Personally I am anxious now and just want to to begin!!! Thanks for the support. You know what? You need to leave her alone and stop being anxious. She needs to be relaxed and have everything normal. Animals will not labour if they are stressed. If you are stressed then she will be stressed. Put her to bed in a nice dark room and go have a few drinks so her hormones can kick in and let labour happen. Good luck *grin*

Labrador Barking For Food
blacklabrador replied to Just love my dogs!'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Like a bitch on heat walks past at the same time every morning? I would say that considering that he barks and then stops when he gets fed, that he simply has his owners very well trained to do exactly what he wants. -
I wonder if it really is poo? I would expect poo to dry and crumble like mud and just brush out of a short pointer coat. Do you think he might have gotten something else on his leg before he got in the crate to be transported to you? Something like wet cement? I've never heard of stubborn poo in a short coat!

Labrador Barking For Food
blacklabrador replied to Just love my dogs!'s topic in General Dog Discussion
We stay in bed trying to ignore the barking but it's hard at 5am to let it continue for a period of time! We're really worried now that the neighbours will complain again. You can hear the barking even when he's inside! You need to control the barking so your neighbours aren't suffering. Get him inside and control him while you sort the problem out. Seriously - how people can allow their dogs to bark at 5am is unbelievable. I would complain too and be bloody annoyed that you were staying in bed ignoring the noise your dog was making to wake the neighbourhood up. Put him in a crate and try something else to make him shut up. You've created a problem where your dog is in control. Now you need to reverse the situation so you as pack leader are totally in charge of when and where food happens. I feed my dogs at night and any attempt to manipulate me (whining at the back door) and attempting to dictate the feeding time usually ends up with a cup of water poured out the window on somebody's head. They get the message and I feed them when I'm good and ready. I love my dogs to bits but I am the Mama dog and I stay in control of such things. -
Just act normally and ignore him a bit. That will reestablish trust quicker than acting all guilty with him. He will want food sooner or later . Dogs don't hang on to stuff like us humans do.

He's lovely! The love of a male pointer is like nothing else. Absolute adoration. Badger is lovely! :D

Go Lola! She's looking good Huga! Still perpetually worried but good.

Sas, perhaps being involved with the breed would give you a clearer insight into the issues. I would suspect that there are far more breeders out there breeding chocolate labs for their colour than there are breeding them for their quality. If you know the show scene and look through the lists of breeders it becomes clear that a lot of breeders that fit into this category do not show their dogs (nor does anybody else). There are a handful of fine breeders who breed chocolates and are doing a wonderful job of improving the standard of them in Australia. Miss Monaro is one of them and so are many of the other breeders who have been mentioned in this thread. Unfortunately for every "good" breeder there are many out there who are mating two chocolate dogs with no real regard for breed type. I guess that does generate an attitude within people who associate with the breed but at this stage I believe that those who are doing the right thing by the colour are proving themselves enormously, particularly in recent years. Thanks, Labs were my breed before Danes....for 20 years You're welcome and if you've been involved with breeding and showing then you'll know exactly what I mean.

Condys Crystals ..............has Anyone
blacklabrador replied to Trishm's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It works wonderfully for humans! I use it for tinea because I don't like using medicated creams during pregnancy. -
Although I am very partial to black labrador, the most important thing when I look at a dog is how well it fits the standard. I see SO many terribly bred labradors on the beach and at the dog park and it's such a shame. I love yellows too but the narrow headed, light eyed variety that I see around just make me want to scrub my eyeballs with bleach. Too many backyard breeders and puppy farmers around getting hold of labradors and turning them into something unrecognisable.

So sorry Horus. She was a lovely girl. RIP Ellie.

Ditto.

RIP Seven. What a beautiful girl.

Yep I agree. I can't imagine a dog quietly mauling another animal either, even if the baby was quiet. It doesn't matter how tired you are - how could that go on in the bed beside you without you being aware? Sounds like drugs to me too.

Do You Thik He's Still Too Fat?
blacklabrador replied to HugUrPup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You posted 8 days ago to say that he'd gotten fat again. It would be pretty unusual for a dog to go from fat to being okay in 8 days. -
Glad to hear that she's all good Huga. She will be able to play hard at the park now!

I don't think this is news to most people here. Parvo lives in the soil for years. If you don't want to revaccinate your dog then you can have titre testing done to see whether he is still immune to his previous shots (which he most probably will be).
-
I just saw this. Must have been hard to wait all day Huga I hope it all goes well tomorrow. Will be thinking of the little puglet tomorrow. Thinking of you too.

I love puppies but like adolescence a bit less. They are fantastic while they are so sweet and "pliable". Then they get minds of their own and it's a stage you know you have to go through.
