  1. Not bad, eh Whit! Yeah, it looked too lean for a pure Bernard, but the markings were right! I sort of got the feeling I've seen that dog in film/TV before somewhere, but I could be imagining that...
  2. Anyone else catch the breed, if it is pure, of the dog in the newest Star Trek movie? It's a big red and white guy that jumps up onto a bed at the start, not on screen for very long. (Also, Into Darkness is great, and should be seen ASAP :D)
  3. I actually got an update on Sunday, due to the customer spotting this post actually, she rang me especially to tell me that he had arrived safe and sound, and he hasn't yet had any incontinence problems either :)
  4. I used to carry a small hairdressing spray bottle on stream squirt with a half-half vinegar-water spray in it, for walking by a distant neighbor who refused to contain their DA dog. Fortunately they moved before I had to use it.
  5. Thank you guys! Will take this into consideration. How long does the clear/yellowish discharge tend to last? I know there are no rules for certain, but until that is finished, it's not safe to take her out and about, no?
  6. I got a wonderful warm fuzzy at work yesterday, talking to a customer who was getting a new Westie joining her family. The story came out that she was adopting a 12 year old, whom, after 12 years with his family was being put into rescue ( ) because his health problems meant that he was getting bowel incontinence. This lovely lady is giving him a second chance bringing this special needs boy into her home, where he will live a happy remainder of his life with two other Westie playmates. I spent the remainder of my work day in an incredibly good mood after hearing this story
  7. Maya is almost finished her first heat, thank goodness! (I have been the most paranoid owner throughout the past few weeks...) I have been told by a few people and read around the net that it is a good idea to wait 2 or so months after the first heat before desexing because of swelling? I will be checking with our vet but what is people's experience and thoughts on desexing after a heat? As a side note I'm so glad Maya has been such a good girl throughout. I can tell she misses our usual walks and visits, especially going to the dog park to visit all her friends, but she has been ultra tolerant. Hasn't destroyed anything even when unsupervised in the house, settling down to sleep or follow me and James around, even accepting the sanitary pants without batting an eyelid :)
  8. Somebody I know here lost one of their dogs to the extreme heat wave we had last week in North Queensland. I'd be willing to look ay anything to help keep heat sensitive dogs cooler. We used to get these in at work, some people loved them, some people were turned off by the fact if the dog chewed the insides it could make them sick.
  9. Okay and full test picked up! Zeke's breakdown is 50% lab, 25% mixed/unknown, 12.5% boxer and 12.5% GSP. Zeke's Dad is half lab, quarter GSP and quarter Boxer. The only boxer trait I see in Zeke is his big deep chest... definitely not much boxer in phenotype. Funny considering that so many people see the GSP in his face! His mother was interesting... the lab half in her was easily revealed, from two purebred lab parents, but the other half came back 'mixed breed' when his owners were sure her father was a cattle dog. Could be mistaken of course but I find it very likely the cattle dog was there, as all Zeke's siblings had the cattle dog markings. So either the test couldn't pick it up or there were multiple dads in his mum's litter!
  10. Okay, quick over the phone word to my favourite vet nurse reveals... Labrador Retriever, Boxer !!!! and GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTER This is so exciting :D I'm going to pick up the full test today and pour over it :D
  11. That's all I did it for... curiosity and fun! The tests have been a bit of a hot topic between customers, dog park friends and online so I admit to being curious at their accuracy. If I learn something from it, great! Waiting on the vet to call me back... wonder if they will tell me over the phone, or I have to go in and pick it up. Wish they had online results!!
  12. Ooooh. Got processed today - report not available online which is somewhat disappointing, I have to call the vets. Hmm, tomorrow it is!
  13. I know about two months ago I priced it at around $65 for the biggest 6pack but I changed computers and lost all my bookmarks. Can anybody point me to buying comfortis online cheaply? Google searches are turning up a dozen new sites but none the ones I previously looked at.
  14. No freckling that I can see, no. He has one tiny white flash upon his chest though! Any other pale hairs have arisen from age; around his muzzle, chin and paws.
  15. Thank you for sharing that test what an interesting read... Cata, yyyyea right :p Lab x Staffy methinks!
  16. No photo was sent in. They may have asked my vets for their description where he is down on paper as lab x cattle, but that's all the info they have on him :)
  17. I love you jumped on GSP right away! Whenever I see GSP pics I see Zeke's face and eyes, I have always suspected there was some in him! Kelpie and dobe are two of the common guesses I get for his father's side, but I think that's mainly based on colouring and markings, I'm not sure he has either in him. His mother looked like him except black with the same blue markings - she came from a choc lab x cattle dog. Her whole litter looked like her. Zeke was the only choc/red out of the litter.
  18. Great job Roxy! I love labs who never grow up :D I must say after reading your last thread, I watched how Zeke and Maya interacted with interest with a few local boxers. There are several that come to both dogs parks we frequent. Maya seems to react no differently than she does with any other dog, she is as relaxed as ever. Zeke however was a different story! In particular he challenged an intact male, and was rather intolerant of a hypo puppy. While neither situation is overly unusual for him - he is one of the top dogs at the park and he does feel the need to assert himself with pushy males at times - he was waaaay more tolerant of the rotty puppy climbing on him the next minute.
  19. After hearing a lot about the breed DNA testing service Advance is now offering I decided to get Zeke done for a bit of fun. This particular one shows up to the great-grandparents, so I was interested to put it to the test. I know a few branches of his mother's family, (hence why on paper he's referred to as "Lab x Cattle dog") and I'm eager to see how it matches up! His father's input is the unknown side. Anyone else want to share their DNA testing stories? I'm aware that not everybody's experiences have come back accurate, and as stated - I got it done for fun. Here's some photos, for anybody who wants to guess at his origins, knock yourselves out :D
  20. Yep, this is what gave me the irresponsible vibe from the owner. Says she has no intentions of breeding her husky but says she would have been happy to do it anyway. That's what I mean about breeding on a whim. That's the irresponsible part in my eyes.
  21. I see the female's owner as the bigger idiot. Even if the dogs had known of one another how could the owner be sure her dog wouldn't wind up mauled instead of pregnant, throwing it into another dog's territory? But the husky owner isn't awfully responsible either. If she's quite clear she never wanted to breed her husky, desex the dog. Breeding shouldn't be undertaken on a whim.
  22. I had to read this through twice before I understood that Henry had been without food for five days, presumably because he and poor Lynda's body were not discovered up until that time. This article seems to be making out that he was put down because he had mild arthritis and his neighbors was arguing that he was still mobile, that was the issue that led to his decision to be put down - when to me it's because of the five days without food and water. I can imagine an older dog would be suffering greatly after this not the mention undergoing emotional stress after the death of his owner and being alone for nearly a week. Hopefully the vet/charity were not making the quick and easy decision and putting an older dog down rather than rehome
