  1. Good on you guys, hope he gets nailed to the wall! Keep us updated. How is Riddick this morning? So glad he is not showing any lasting issues after his attack!
  2. I would recommend to walk separately, or recruit a helpful friend or family member that can walk one dog, until they are fully trained and reliable with other dogs :) Harnesses should fit snugly, same as a collar, two fingers underneath and no more. If the dog can wiggle a leg up and out, they can get out of the harness!
  3. I would rather see puppies and kittens rehomed in this manner than them being PTS. In a perfect world this would not be needed at all because all pets would have a happy forever home... we are a long way from that. Agree that animals should not be adopted out then and there, and there should be a good screening process. I see all the time in the store where I work people will come in who NEED a puppy or kitten right now. Pointing them in the direction of the RSPCA or other adoption areas will only take you so far when there is another pet shop down the road selling cute little BYB pups and kittens all ready to go. All the arguments in the world will not sway them, all they want is to go home then and there, with their new pet. My feeling is as long as there is a demand for animals in pet stores, there is room for adoptions instead of buying BYB or farmed animals, provided they are undertaken with careful screening so that people are not impulse buying. Since we are not likely to see all live animals removed from pet stores while there is still this demand, a better step (rather than no step at all) would be to allow adoptions of rehomed animals instore. Like so many issues it boils down to education. Spelling edit
  4. How awful to hear, I wish Riddick a swift recovery! What a terrible thing to happen to any dog, especially a young impressionable guy. People like this make me so MAD. Especially since he was blaming you, clearly can take no responsibility for what he has done in allowing a large and aggressive dog off lead in a public place. I'm really proud you got his rego details and have reported him, if this guy makes a habit of this, it probably won't be the first complaint about him. Stand up for yourself and your dog! Cuddles for Riddick too.
  5. He slept well through the night, though he was baffled at first when I put his cone on. This morning when I removed the dressing I found a tiny part of cotton caught in the healing stitches, and that was a pain to get out! He seems comfortable, though I have him on painkillers, so that could be why. I'm extremely glad Maya isn't hassling him, she seems very sensitive to him, and isn't pestering him to play the way she usually is
  6. Zeke had his surgery today to remove a wart from his eyelid and two fatty tissue limpomas from side & shoulder. The surgery all went well, he's home now and all bandaged up looking sorry for himself. A little groggy from the anesthetic, he paced around inside for an hour before finally settling down to sleep. He had pre-anaesthetic bloodwork done and IV fluids, since I knew what to expect thanks to some helpful folk from here :) Going to be fun trying to keep he and Maya separated though. She dotes on her big brother and wants to play with him all the time. At least I have the next two days off work, so Zeke can doze at home under OH's care and Maya can head off to the markets, beach and dog park. Zeke's appetite had already returned (Lab X!) so I'm sure he'll bounce back quickly.
  7. I use interceptor for my kids for heartworm and internationals. Do not like hertworm injection as I think it is a large dose to have at one time. I use comfortis for fleas (WIN this stuff is gold I swear) which is also a deterrent for ticks. (not on the label yet though there are studies being done that may result in this :)) Tick issues can also be helped by treating your environment (yard/house) and a thorough check every time you've been to a tick prone area like beach, walk to prevent them coming into your yard ;)
  8. Maya had a lovely walk today at the foreshore, I really thought that at some point she'd stop charming people walking by... has not happened yet :D Maya posing at the foot of the waterfall. Really what she was waiting for is this... "You want to recycle your icecream container? Those have to be rinsed out first, allow me." The mouselings are looking a little bit more like actual mice at a week old~!
  9. A friend of mine flew her ACD when she went back to America, he had bounced back wonderfully, that said he was a pretty well adjusted dog to begin with, not what I would call timid :) She went through nightmares with her dog's flights being canceled though and times changing, after she had arranged everything so she could arrive at the same time he could. If it were a permanent relocation, I would not hesitate to do it!
  10. The does have it's flaws but at least it is making the attempt to educate public, rather than a stressed out dog being locked up at home and the issue never addressed.
  11. Just imagine how many of these breeds would immediately stop being taken to the vet.
  12. OMG Besty was BEAUTIFUL. Easily one of the nicest looking ticked tabbys I've seen! Lots of Bengal in her face and eyes, and just look at that photo of her snuggling Indy OH and I love the one of her shooing you a dirty look in the snow, hehe! How did she end up a brown ticked tabby being Burmese x Bengal? I reckon an Abby snuck into her parentage somewhere ;)
  13. Hey Pa, Your chocolate Dobe boy is STUNNING I do agree! I understand your sentiment. Sometimes when I look at Maya who is six months old, I think to myself "Wouldn't her puppies be beautiful... they might have her good nature and beauty and great conformation" - I think it is natural to want to share such devotion and love, for others to share the special bond we have with our dogs :) However... I think of all the responsibility. I would have if I bred her. I think of all the money on vet bills and medications for the pups, vaccination and microchips and health tests. All the time off work I would need in order to look after mum and puppies. I think of the tremendous responsibility of finding new homes for up to twelve or more puppies. What are the odds I could find up to a dozen people who would happily provide everything for their new pup I do for Maya? Even if I did, what if a circumstance changed? What if a spouse died and the puppy ended up at the pound, crying for their family? I don't think I could stand hearing a sad outcome for a puppy I has chosen to bring into the world. I know I'm too emotional for puppy breeding. I wouldn't be able to let go. I'd be forever worrying about my babies. I wouldn't be able to be sure I'd found the right new owners. And so... I decided that in order to share Maya's love around... instead of breeding, I would train her carefully, and let the people who meet Maya experience a breed they often have never seen before, and let people see for themselves how special she is PS... In all honesty I decided all of this about breeding long before I brought Maya home or even thought about buying my new dog - but now I have her I am convinced it is the right choice :)
  14. From the video link, it says they were banned, because of letting three cats out the week before. I think they would have decided to 'payback' the shelter by breaking in and letting out all the animals. I'm not saying the kids are blameless, at seven, ten or thirteen, you are old enough to know right from wrong. But If my seven, ten or thirteen year old were roaming around the streets doing this sort of thing I'd generally be considered a pretty pathetic parent.
  15. I have mixed feelings about Panaramis. One one hand the flea side of it, if unchanged from Comfortis, should be equally fantastic. However as I work in the pet industry, I hate to see another product out that many people will assume is an allwormer, when it does not do any of the tapeworm species I do believe it is effective enough to help control flea tapeworms, however, these are not the only type of tapeworm... I have this issue with Advocate & Revolution... a customer will pick it up or have it recommended and think they are covered for all worms. I think it will be a good product for controlling what it controls but I wish it covered tapeworms.
  16. Here is Maya's big brother, Zeke (Big brother in age only, she is now an inch taller than he is) my Lab x Cattle Dog. Zeke is the one who taught Maya the joys of being a waterdog in the tropics  Maya on out afternoon walk yesterday. She has not seen cattle up close since she was a puppy. Yesterday when we passed their fenceline they were close and Maya stopped, stared, and then sat down to study them. Then she lay down and glanced at me. "Can I guard these please mum?" And not quite as cute as they will be, this is my litter of 3-day-old "aliens" New mum Mia is doing wonderfully with a very large litter of 13. Tentatively, they look like 6 boys, 7 girls. A lovely mix of dark and lights - the darks will all be Black Tans like their parents. The lighter guys are the recessive c-dilutes, which will very likely be Siamese or Colourpoint Beige. (Black eyed Siamese). All of these should be Longcoat Rexes too, so fluffy :D Thanks all :) OMG Crestie I cannot IMAGINE how crazy a Burmese x Bengal would be!!! Do you have any photos handy around DOL? :)
  17. Tlc yes most of these were taken with the new camera indeed! I am loving it, though still working on getting good action shots especially in lower light. The Kakis, Tiels, and Sage eating th table are older photos from the previous camera. *beam* Thankyou Bianca! Princess Maya also says thank you (though she gets so fawned over by... just about everybody who meets her... I suspect she gets too many compliments but how could you not? :D)
  18. This is Calypso, my Pale-head Rosella. She is my baby girl (shares with Maya  ) The pied Kakariki pair, Em and Rose. Coud, whitefaced pied, and Storm, whiteface cinnamon pearl, my cockatiels. A few of my budgies
  19. Thought I'd throw my recent pack photos up here to show off my family :) Most of you know Maya, my Anatolian Shepherd, already. She had her first dog park trip this weekend and made some new friends! Maya at my mum and dads, stopping for a drink! Sage, my tuxedo Burmese x Doemstic Shorthair. This is pretty normal behavior for him. This is my newest Fancy Mouse, born in a litter five weeks ago. She's a longcoat rex chocolate tan, I called her Alia. Buddy, the biggest of my Bearded Dragons, had a rare bath this past weekend - he had a few funky scales that haven't moulted through well, so I gave him a soak in warm water to help. His favourite part of the bath is getting wrapped up and towel dried afterwards :)
  20. Little s***s. I blame both parents and children - that's all they are, pathetic children. I'd lock them up for a year as an example. And the parents ought to have to pay a few thousand in fines. Just disgusting.
  21. I would agree with that - that is what I think situations like Hachi and Bobby come from. I see it the same was as when an animal gets sick. Many you can tell, they WANT to get better, and they will not give up, and they will fight for their life. But others, you see, have given up on life, and no matter what you do you cannot convince these few to live The situation if I think you rarely, will get a dog that does not want to move on. They will not accept a new owner, they will not accept a new life. But, thankfully, I think most dogs can be convinced to move forward. Zeke's best friend was my Jack Russell x Chihuahua boy, Jayne. I have never never seen any two dogs such good friends before Zeke and Jayne. Zeke moped after Jayne died. I devoted attention to him, spent time with him, left him with radios/treat balls/new toys and treats anytime he had to be on his own. Then Maya came along and I saw the spark go back into my dear old boy. Maya is not the same as Jayne for Zeke, even though they are great friends, he had untold tolerance for her, and he is devoted to her in his big brother/pack leader way. But he now has another packmate to focus his attention on, and you can see how content he is as to how lonely he was with only him and me.
  22. I think I really fell for Maya my first visit to her breeder. Right near the end of a big play session with her and all her siblings ( Is there really anything better than sitting down with a litter and playing ) when Lilli was getting their dinner ready I went to fetch Maya and one of her brothers into the pen, they were playing outside, I called to them and turned to walk back inside, and Maya trotted happily inside right behind me :) Of course it was probably all about the tasty dinner but it was still a nice moment! She knows exactly how to melt my heart at any point in time... when she wants attention she will come over, sit by me, then nose-nudge my hand, arm or knee. I think I fall in love all over again any time she does this. :)
  23. Another Thundershirt advocate here May help settle and with strange noises. When Maya was a puppy she was afraid of the staircase at my parents place. I carried her up them and down them, but I always put her on the next step but one so she had to do one step by herself. As her confidence grew I placed her next step down/up and at six months she now races up and down them without blinking. Keep up with your basic training, and keep your pup away from the snarly schnauzer for now. When you do start socializing with other dogs, start with ones he is more comfortable with :)
  24. I can't remember weather I asked about the price during the initial conversations via email or the first phonecall or if they were given to me. I definitely had to know, but what it came down to, I had found a breeder I was happy with, and I knew a rough estimate of the price of my chosen breed, and the price I was told was about that - when I decided the timing was right for my next dog I began a savings fund straight away and I put my weekly spending money into that until I had enough. I think price is an important thing to know for most people. If I need a new appliance or have a renovation to do around the house, I plan and budget it out beforehand and make sure I have the money before the job begins or before I go shopping. Getting a puppy was no different for me. I would hardly go into a shop, get a fridge loaded into my car and fill out the paperwork and then say "Well sorry, it's more than I expected it would be, I can't buy this" nor would I do this with a puppy :)
  25. I think you need to have a plan in place no matter what your age. just because I'm in my twentys does not guarantee I won't get sick with cancer next month, or get hit by a bus crossing the road tomorrow. Zeke would go to my Mum and Dad and Maya returned to her breeder for rehoming. My birds, my cat, my beardies and my mice left to particular workmates.
