  1. Find out what day/night the local obedience class trains (do they have a website or facebook page?) and phone them during training hours. Our club has a phone, but it isn't staffed outside training hours, so this might be why you aren't getting a response. :)
  2. http://www.gooddogsa.com/pages/kids# This site might be useful for you. It's by the Dog and Cat Management Board of SA. They have a Resources section as well, with information sheets and posters available for download.
  3. For camping, you could get a stake and a cable tie-out: http://www.australianpetshop.com.au/shop/dog_tethering/tie-outs.php Maybe a crate might work better in this situation. You wouldn't want to lose her through leash failure.
  4. Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all the information. It seems a little bit more feasible after having read all of this! Thanks all. :)
  5. Is there anyone that knows much about traveling on planes with a dog? I'm considering taking mine up to Sydney for a long weekend holiday, but am wondering about approximate costs and procedures. How expensive is it to put a dog on the same flight as you? In this case, we'd be going from Adelaide to Sydney and back. Is sedation necessary/highly recommended? Are there any permits (council, DPI etc.) needed? (Clearly I haven't done this before!) Any additional medications needed to be administered? I know going to Tassie, a dog needs to be treated for Hydatid tapeworms etc. How stressful is it on the dog to travel like this? Just wondering whether it's feasible and safe to take him. Otherwise, it'll be off to the kennels for him! If you have any advice or information, I'd greatly appreciate hearing it! Thanks. :)
  6. Mine gets the same. He's a chocolate though, so it's a little more understandable. He's also been mistaken several times for an Aussie by Aussie owners.
  7. I've heard good things about Bob Yeo of Canine Detection Service (www.caninedetectionservice.com.au), and also Mark Singer of Adelaide Canine Training (www.caninetraining.com.au). I haven't met or used either, but they seem to come well recommended by shelters and private clients. I'm not sure, but I believe both are trainers rather than behaviourists, so if you want a behaviourist you may have to look elsewhere.
  8. When are you putting the band on? Might it be putting pressure on his bladder when you put it on and be making him wee? If you aren't already, maybe put it on after he's had a wee outside, and this might help him stop going when you put it on.
  9. I use the K9Pro one that somebody else linked to earlier. Large enough for more than ample treats, quick access and close, and can wipe it clean no problems. Have had it for about a year, and have no complaints. Even proved useful for holding phone and money etc. for Big Day Out!
  10. Find any designated car wash around your area. They should have at least one dog wash facility (with fence) there. =)
  11. There's a switch for selecting the different modes - disinfect is one. I can do my BC for $4-$5 if I bring my own shampoo and conditioner. Rinse, shampoo, rinse, conditioner, rinse, (rinse again if I was too slow), dry with towel, disinfect.
  12. Police dog handling is also an option. This does require going through the Police course and spending three years on general duties before specialising, but that's the same amount of time one might spend doing a Uni degree before getting to work in their dream job.
  13. Clearly from the dog's behavour, both of you are in the beginners class. Perhaps she hasn't done a lot of training with the dog. Perhaps she has not had a spitz breed before (who sometimes require a different training style to more suggestible breeds). Perhaps she has never owned or trained a dog before. Judging the woman for the dog's behaviour, especially one who is in a beginners class, is unhelpful at best. Hopefully, with time, she will either realise herself or be helped to realise that this style of training is not working for this individual dog, and she will find some better methods of training. Knowledge comes with help - self-education or education by others - and experience. Perhaps you could offer the help she needs, rather than rant about and judge an inexperienced woman simply for her inexperience. Initiating a friendly chat before classes commence can lead to a light discussion of training methods. Support, even in sharing of exasperation at the frustrating things that dogs can do, is infinitely more useful. Best of luck to her, and hopefully she'll soon develop some better handling skills and see some improvement!
  14. Perhaps donate it to a rescue organisation? Whilst many fosterers might not use kennels, I'm sure they could find a use for it for somebody somewhere. =)
  15. I'd probably have a chat to the owners first before taking it to the council. If the owner has seemed apologetic in the past, a friendly "Hey there, your dog seems to get out a bit, my dog's a little intimidated by it and I'm also worried it might get injured by cars etc. Would you mind making sure the gate's locked?" might be enough to stop the problem without starting any tensions. Even a letter in the mail box might help if you feel the conversation might be difficult to have (non-confrontational too!). Best of luck!
  16. Ask your friend or Mr M to give the Ombudsman a call, maybe? The decision to seize the dog was made by the council, so should fall under their list of services. Hopefully they may be able to help. Www.ombudsman.Vic.gov.au
  17. He's a BC, so sadly probably a bit big for the small dog kennels. Don't Fret Pet would be great, but we're having some friends stay here while we're away already (but I don't trust the boys to actually get up off the lounge and walk him!). I will check out the Golden Grove kennel though - thanks! Any other recommendations?
  18. Hi there everyone! I'm wondering if anyone knows any good kennels to board with in South Australia, or possibly even someone who homestays dogs. Adelaide area is preferable, but I'm willing to drive if there's a good place a little bit further out. Any past experiences? Recommendations? Or places I should avoid? I haven't boarded him (or any other dog) before, so I'd appreciate any information. Thanks!
