I am not confident that I am right, but the newspaper report says it was shot in the back of the neck. I do think the officer was wrong in his decision. And is there some reason why my opinion should have less validity than yours - so why are you confident that you are right? You have no more information than I do. I have already stated my case - this is going around in circles. I don't believe either your, or my opinion is the absolute truth .... they are opinions. I don't think police should be shooting things without other options being used, and you think it is ok for him to shoot first. No problem with me, you are allowed to disagree with me, and if I am not allowed t o disagree with you, you have already said that a couple of times. Edited because sentences need verbs

And the people being attacked harden up, grow some balls. Right Jed? Absolutely - if they had been real people, they would have bashed the dog to death with their handbags, chewed on its legs with a cuppa, and cut the hide off to resole their shoes. Maybe time for you to appreciate that people can have differing opinions to you, and you should to respect and appreciate them, rather than appearing very juvenile and immature. :) I can remember when some on here had your attitude towards pitbulls.

One way trip to the vet. Surely the council would insist.
-
Last month, I paid a vet $2,600 for a spey due to a closed pyo. That included in house blood tests, 2 over night stays But - I just phoned dentists to have a filling replaced First one quoted $180 - $400 Second quoted $140 - $185

BJD - if shooting the dog, IN THE BACK OF THE NECK was this big girl's blouse's very first reaction to a dog either running at him, or running backwards before he tried other options, he should reassess his career options. What will he do when it gets really serious? Lots of policemen handle lots of dogs every day, without shooting them. Yes, police may enter your property - but only with a warrant or by the occupier's invitation. Defend the policeman all you like, My opinion has not changed. But don't worry, it's only a dog, those bogans can get another one as quick as you like. Bogans have no feelings anyhow

Non-chewable/extra Strong Outside Dog Bed
Jed replied to Mollyrulz's topic in General Dog Discussion
Buy 1 bottle of Tabasco sauce (supermarket) 1 x spray bottle (500 ml) put about 4 cm of Tabasco sauce in the bottle, fill with water. Spray entire bed with mixture. If dog continues to eat the bed, put more Tabasco in the mix Spray bed daily ... probably for about 2 weeks, until dog learns that the bed tastes nasty. My cavaliers who just loved the cable ties on the beds, ate them off as soon as they were on, soon learned once the Tabasco was sprayed on. Yep, we had a bit of mouth pawing, but they learned to leave them alone. IMHO, this is about the only thing which works. Otherwise use Bitter Bite from the pet shop. I haven't had much luck with that -
11 Week Old Boxer Puppy Admitted To Hospital

Perhaps the breeder will know, Boxbright? -
:) So unless Police were invited or had a warrant or a legitimate reason under the law to be there (note: questioning occupants is not on the list), then there may be a case for the owner to bring civil charges of trespass and potentially damage of property as well. The article seems to imply the owner is pretty emotionally unstable so I doubt she herself will take any legal action in any case.... BlackJaq, like all law, its not that straight forward. Where the line of "private property" is drawn is variable. Generally there is an implied license to enter residential property that goes as far as the front door. You can revoke that license for the general public but both legislation and common law give police and a range of other people limited powers to enter for the performance of particular duties. And of course there are also easements on most properties that permit essential services workers access to maintain them. Generally a police officer does not need to be invited to attend your property to knock on your front door and ask you a question. They cannot enter your house without your permission unless they are in possession of a warrant that authorises them to do something that would otherwise be unlawful. It's also worth noting that for the incident we are discussing, the police were not conducting a search. Of course this is far more straightforward in the ACT where, by law, we are not permitted to have front fences. Not quite correct. If you allow access to your property (ie, the gate is not chained), people may enter. Including the police. If you ask them to leave, they must leave (including the police). the police may enter with a warrant. If the council, the meter man, or an arch angel enters and does not leave when asked, they are trespassing. In the case of no front fences, you would need to post a sign on the front boundary. Every court case in Aust has upheld this principle. It is based on Semayne's Law which dates back to 10something, which stresses the right of the sheriff to "seize the body", but everyone else is trespassing. The link provided by BlackJac gives details of cases. Incidentlly, perhaps there was no sign on this particular property because the owners considered that the dog, being nice natured, did not need one? And perhaps these particular police would have ignored it?

Most of the breeders I know aim for the big 3 - temperament/health/conformation. The standard dictates temperament, and it may only be a few words but they are usually descriptive and succinct. IMHO, after a lifetime of breeding, temperament is of prime importance. If the croup is a little high, or the back a little long, the pet owner (90% or more of owners) will not care if his dog is agreeable, trainable, affectionate, and fits the characteristics he believed he would get when he bought the breed. It is my opinion also that many of the dogs who are dumped to not have good temperaments. Both pure and x bred. I don't mean dogs who bite, I mean dogs with separation anxiety, dogs who don't have good nerve, dogs who are jittery and hard to train, etc etc. Conformation judging assesses the dogs' temperaments. And ringside judges can also see whether the dogs have the correct standard. A cavalier with his tail tucked under is not a good thing ... "fearless" Standard There are not a lot of words there, but they are very clear, and easy for a breeder to follow.

No, I wasn't there.Like everyone else, I am using the newspaper article, and the reports from witnesses - because that is all there is. And if you object to that, this subject should not be up for discussion at all. Further, perhaps the dog ran at the policeman, frothing and fuming. However, maybe it trotted up, lay down, and rolled over and that's why he shot it in the back of the neck. We don't know. We are arguing, as we arguing on most things here, on what was printed in the paper. I'm over arguing about this. we could continue to argue various points for months. The point for me is that the policeman showed lack of respect for someone's property. He could have used pepper spray or his baton, or shouted. He didn't. He shot first. Wrong. If everyone thinks this is ok, God help the world we live in in 10 years.
-
sorry Ruralpug, just can't help trolling - in the genes, I guess. This is what the paper reported on the dog. Combining this with the fact that the dog was shot in the back of the neck, I still believe the whole situation is disgraceful. Mrs Elliot may not have known the usual condition of a dead body, but she sure as hell knew where the bullet hit the dog. Cody, you can have any opinion you like, just be prepared to defend it. By having that opinion, you may lead someone to consider a position they would not have considered otherwise. Also people who agree with you may not be confident enough to post in the face of opposition, but will do so if there is some support. Of course, you have to be prepared for a bit of flack, and people running into other threads and incorrectly describing your ideology, but that's life. eh? Just for the record - I have great respect for the police - the right ones - not including Terry Lewis - and I also respect what they do, and that it is a difficult and underpaid job. I am friends with some policemen, including a couple of AFT but that doesn't change my opinion about this.
-
Absolutely. You probably need to differentiate between numpty behaviour and the other sort Because people do good things does not mean that the bad should be ignored.
-
I sure hope you loudly express this opinion should you ever need the help of the police or other people who put their lives on the line each day. Absolutely. Every time I have phoned the police, they have been too busy to turn up, so, fortunately, the dogs have never been an issue. I am sure I don't need to let them know how I feel about this, as hundreds of people probably already have. And this thread is about ONE policeman not "other people who put their lives on the line every day" You can all be happy with these actions, I don't have a problem with that. I'm not. And trolls are a vast improvement on sheep

the dog had no complaints lodged with the council....the neighbours attested he was friendly, the owners said he had never attacked. Some big girl's blouse policemen wet himself at the sight of a big dog, and shot first - because he was frightened. Maybe the police force should recruit people who do not wet themselves when faced with a barking dog? totally inappropriate behaviour, imho, and the more we (the public) condone it, the more it will happen.
-
the incident at D Bay was 4 - 5 years ago, I think. Maybe check the newspapers archives. There was a fair bit of publicity, no I don't have anything on it. Not something I would keep, but I felt so sorry for the owners of the dog. If the police shoot a dog attacking them - that's ok with me. what annoys me is them shooting dogs which were declared harmless by neighbours. No respect.
-
The only "friends" the police tend to have are those who've relied on them at some stage for safety reasons or those who appreciate the difficulties of the job they do. Otherwise, no one cares. On occasion, a "numpty with a gun" has a legitmate reason to visit a residence and personally, I don't consider being rushed by a dog big enough to cause serious harm is something they should quietly dance around if they they step foot on a property. Police officers have the right to defend themselves from attack. A serious injury from a dog is NOT part and parcel of what a police officer should expect to suffer when they enter a property. Ideally if they'd had a tazer or OC spray, they might have used non-lethal means.. and that's an if. There's a news story about how ineffective those were when police were called to rescue a couple from a dog attack in NSW last year. If you wish to allow your dogs free rein of your property, lock your gates and post a sign alerting to the presence of the dog/s.. That way there are no surprises. And if entry is required quickly and in an emergency, expect your dog to pay with its life if it offers resistance - emergency services won't be cooling their heels waiting for the ranger. This is stuff every dog owner needs to think through. As I said in my first post, some thought by each and every dog owner as to the consequences of how they keep their pets is the only good that can come of this. If you don't want "undesirables" like kids selling raffle tickets, little old ladies collecting for charity or police performing their lawful duties on your property, BAR ACCESS AND POST A WARNING. That way it won't be your dog that cops a bullet. Of course the irony of the fortress approach to home security is that statistically, the biggest threat to your safety will come from those you know, not "strangers". I do wonder what people recommend is the appropriate course of action for a person who finds a huge dog rushing them and behaving aggressively???? "Be like a tree"??? Doesn't give them the right to shoot the dog. And was the dog behaving aggressively? Or was the big blouse police lady ffffrightened of the big doggy? Yes, I agree with you, the public needs to keep their dogs safe from numpty policemen. Close and lock your gates, refuse access to all. But - according to all reports - the dog was no aggressive, nor was he behaving aggressively. As far as an aggressive dog is concerned - pepper spray? shouting? Pretending you are Wyatt Earp out on the range doesn't do it for me. I wouldn't come onto your property and give your beamer a couple of whacks with an axe because it was in my way, and it might roll onto my foot. Nor should you damage my property because you think it might hurt you People need to respect the property of others -- and that includes dogs - not just knock them off because they can. Don't think a locked gate, or being in the backyard will save your dog. There are many cases of police chasing suspects, shooting the family dog. Last one, as far as I know, was in Deception bay, Qld. Suspect jumped the fence to the backyard, policeman followed, cattle dog barked, policeman shot him. Didn't attack, just barked.

Amazing. back to the original question. I would buy some cheap steak (cheapest I could find) cut it into small pieces, and use that as treats to satisfy Steve's request. If this is a big dog, I presume that you would only be feeding a small % of his food as treats --- not withstanding what Steve wants. I wouldn't feed offal - too messy. Just chunks of meat. If you want to feed raw, please buy a copy of Dr. Ian Billinghurst's "Give a Dog A Bone" and follow the directions in there. There are a lot of ideas out there, and a lot of them bear no relation to a barf diet, and I wonder if some of them are injurious to dogs.

Another dodgy out of control action by the police. They are rapidly losing friends. And I don't think dogs ought to be made to be confined in the rear yard. You own the entire yard, the dog should have access to it. My dogs have access to the front because I don't want access to be easy for undesirables - coz you know what - if you call the police because you have intruders, no one comes!! Phswar for the police. so the dog is doing the police job. And the police need to either screen some of those entering, or train them better. They have no right to shoot your dog. If they shot my dog, I would have them in court in an instant. I hate these stories. I hate the numpties with guns who can't control themselves.

None of us had a chrystal ball. This is exactly what happened in Qld. Honestly. Might suggest their system doesn't work?

American Bulldogs again.........the Jogger now this one There is no place in the community for these stupid breeds for people wanting a protective type of dog. There is nothing wrong with having a dog that offers some protective quality in fact a dog can be very effective to keep potential thieves and unwanted visitors away and help people sleep at night, but a good GSD or Rotty will achieve that nicely who are genetically safe unless provoked with a high degree of trainability......bloody Bulldogs, Mastiff's and crap like that used as protection dogs are mauling's waiting to happen......when individual dogs in these breeds have a high degree of social aggression, they are extremely hard to train and direct aggression in the right areas for the right reason which is the reason why professional's don't use these breeds in formal protection roles. Blame the deed, not the breed. Would have thought you might have learned something from being on this forum. Apparently not.

Hope bruno needs no further surgery and this intervention is all that is required. fingers crossed. Is bruno pedigreed and registered, he looks as if he is?

11 Week Old Boxer Puppy Admitted To Hospital
Jed replied to Boxbright's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
How long have you had her? If you feed beef it should be frozen prior to feeding to avoid this problem. Worth keeping in mind for the future. Hopefully, she will be ok. Pups often recover really well. Good luck :) -
