  1. StaffordsRule - same with my parents' blue heeler. She has a food allergy and shows no symptoms on Hills Sensitive Skin. I think she is crossed with a staffy honestly. She is the biggest escape artist, and never jumps, just bulldozes the fence. :D
  2. Which threads were these? If someone has a reason for not liking a product, in my experience they usually give some sort of reason, as least on here. I feed science diet as well, so would be interested to know.. I would guess though, that these people's dogs have not done well on the food. As you can see in any dry food topic, the real decider in what food to give your dog is whichever your dog does the best on. Trying different foods and seeing how your dogs coat is, what their stools are like, smelliness, whether they need to eat a large amount of the food, or whether a small amount fills them up are all considerations in deciding which food. If it works for you, stick with it. :D
  3. You can definitely teach an old dog new tricks. We have a 14 yo English Springer who was being very rude about snatching dinners. We taught her to lie down and wait before we let her eat. She picked it up in about 3 nights! Brilliant!
  4. I certainly have. As a kid, our red cattle dog used to come over and beg for it. I grew up thinking it was standard practice. When I was little I was surprised that some dogs were scared!!
  5. Our pup grew up on SuperCoat puppy too. He now eats Science Diet. I think if you do a search for supercoat you'll find a lot of previous discussions on it, like this one: http://forums.dogzonline.com.au/index.php?...topic=25691&hl=
  6. Bear, the breed standard says Axle (by my dodgy measurements) is 65.5cm - would that be a bad thing in the ring?
  7. We just did a quick measure and he's about 66cm at shoulder. 66cm and 37 kg. Good proportions?
  8. Well the ones i listed - you don't mix them with anything. The idea is to grow them and the dog just nibbles or sniffs the plant to gain the benefit. It's a bit more of a long term solution, but if you do a search on dog-friendly gardens, I'm sure you'll find heaps of info.
  9. Hey Bear, Axle is 37kg and he's one. Pretty sure he's finished growing upwards, but he'll continue to grow outwards (fill out) til about 2. I love your boy, he's gorgeous. Don't worry 'bout him, he'll be fine.
  10. Forgot to add, the article where i got them from has them growing in the backyard and if the dogs are suffering from a certain ailment, they use the plants to 'self-medicate'. Plus they make your garden smell nice!
  11. Insect repellant herbs: Basil Catnip Chilli Common Mint Fennel Garlic Lavendar Penny Royal Rue Sage Tarragon Wormwood Fleas/Pests: Catnip Fennel Garlic Penny Royal Peppermint
  12. Don't want to confuse the matter, but my parents dog itches along her ribs, and her problem is a food allergy.
  13. Wow, what a scare, Chelsea! Thank God everything is okay. Knowing me, I probably would have cried in relief once she got back. Did you have to sit at the park for a while until you had calmed down!? I'm so glad everything is ok.
  14. My boy is entire, and at 12 months old, he doesn't cock his leg. He just stands perfectly still and lifts his tail up. He's so uncoordinated
  15. Both our dogs aren't puppies anymore and they haven't ever swallowed the necks whole. They crunch them up very noisily (it sounds gross, you can hear the bones cracking!), but i guess i would prefer that to them choking...
  16. Axle, our GSD gets 2 chicken necks and a cup of pellets. Summer, our English Springer gets 1 chicken neck and half a cup of pellets. I'm not sure whether i'd give two or one to your girl. Maybe two, see how she goes on them? If she starts putting on weight too quickly, then cut it back to one? You never know until you try i guess.. ;)
  17. Kayla - we used to feed Supercoat because it's a bit easier on the pocket for my uni-going self. But we have switched to science diet due to the fact that it was free! Bf's mother paid. Woohoo! I don't think we'll go back now
  18. O-ren, i believe that it depends on the ratio of raw mince in the diet. 1/4 mince to 3/4 good quality pellets is generally thought of as ok, i think.
  19. I always figured it was best to feed the pup what the breeder had been feeding it. And we did so until Ax was 6 months. An important point for pups is that if you introduce a new food, introduce it gradually so as to avoid upset tummies.
  20. We were in the same position when we were given my boyfriend's parents dog. She was a 40kg English Springer Spaniel. She is 13 years old. I was aghast, i'd seen overweight dogs, but this was ridiculous. We bought some special pellets for 'senior, non-active' dogs. I give her half a cup morning and night, with the occasional chicken neck. She does get treats during the day, but not too many. And I also give her a small bone sometimes. So far, she's lost 10kg. We are really impressed and would you believe the old codger has started frolicking around since she lost the weight. She's got a new lease of life. I don't know if I can help you much, because you're not really going to take this lady's dog from her. But i mean, maybe even just for a week? I don't know. Just thought you'd like to know that there is hope.
  21. Our old dog's pee is killing our grass. Reduces it to dirt! We tried to get her to pee in a specific area but that didn't work. At a recent vet visit, we had it checked out, and the vet said she had high urea levels and gave us some tablets to put her on. She seemed completely healthy - eats, drinks, no worries. Perhaps a vet visit to test some urine to rule out anything? Sorry if you already have done this, but i glanced over the topic and didn't see it mentioned. Good luck!
  22. Our dogs are on Supercoat, and the breeder recommended we use it. Axle has a gorgeous coat and is healthy and happy.
  23. KitKit your boy is gorgeous!!! Is he a longhair? Axle is just over 30kg at 7 months. It's nice to see other owner's weights just to make sure i'm going okay. Do they do much height growing after 7 months or is it more filling in? NM about the long haired question. Just saw your post there saying 'long hair'. lol
  24. Tess32, I read on another thread a while ago that one person puts the treats in her mouth and gets the dog to take them from her mouth. I'm sorry, i don't remember what the thread was or who the person was, i just remember that she said it grossed her husband out!
