  1. Today was a good day to own a norty dog. Up early to training with my wonderful trainers who know how to stretch us but always make sure we are successful. Very successful distracted recalls from barking at a fence line of barking big dogs. Nice heeling work right next to the little dogs enclosure and best of all I had the confidence to stop at the coffee shop at the plant nursery on the way home and we wandered through the rose gardens and shared a muffin. What bliss.????
  2. Jake can also hiss, he rolls on his back and hisses like a snake to get you to rub his belly. Grunting, snorts, extremely loud yawns that sound like he's stretching his vocal chords and various sighs and gurgles, bulldogs are never quiet. I'm used to it but when my sister stayed over she was laughing all the time.
  3. I bribe my dog with a jar of peanut butter not to scream, yell and threaten to tear the ears off every dog he sees. I managed to have a quiet conversation across the road with a lady holding a poodle today. We discussed what I was doing and finally came to the sad conclusion that "its only a trick, I'm not really changing how he feels." Haha he has Prozac to change how he feels and on bad days I have some to change how I feel about how he feels but truth is who cares how anyone feels, he's not yelling and we all feel better about that.
  4. I realize my dog is an atheist, he thoroughly enjoys all those things.
  5. So does Odie scream? Jake has a bizarre scream, he actually says "hubba, hubba". I've never seen a frenchie in real life but from some you tube clips it's a very frenchie type behavior. From what I know of his breeding he's half frenchie. I'm attributing his norty behavior to that side!!!
  6. It would depend. if the dog looked well cared for and was a well socialized, normal dog I think after a week I would rerun it. I'd feel sorry for someone who lost their dog after 7 years. If the dog appeared to have been less than well cared for I'd keep it. There's so many digs needing rescue if this one has a decent home then I'd rather rescue another.
  7. Yep, Jake is very much my dog. Varies between grudgingly taking treats from the trainer to flat out refusing. Last week I took jelly tots, I eat them late at night if I'm working and he will wake up at 1am for them. She put one on his bottom jaw and he refused to eat it. We have played recall between two of us with the trainer having the long leash so she can reel him in, I also just walk off and leave him with her. He's better if he can't see me. If I'm there he'll look at me each time she gives a command. He does however understand her commands, when she says "Tell him to down" hell drop before I say anything.
  8. Oh well done. Preparing them is so worth the effort, my bulldogs used to snuggle with the babies, quite hard to tell them apart but your dogs are very handsome.
  9. Moving behind you is excellent, she's seeing you as the one to deal with the situation. If she stops doing this then you're in trouble, when she decides she has to deal with it then its very hard to convince them not to. Part of my battle has been to convince Jake that I'm in charge and I'm the one who decides what to do. I have to put myself in front if him and block the other dog, also getting the voice of god out and yelling "no"or "get back "whilst leaning slightly forward helps get the other dog to go away and gets their owners to call them.
  10. Jake will have a treat please Clay. He didnt really feel the hal.loween spirit in his dalmation costume, although chilling on the beanbag seemed more his style . I love the texture of the grass in those park shots Weibritty, great texture and adds to the movement.
  11. Jake chanelling his frenchie side.
  12. In my dreams I'm going in a road trip/ camping walkabout with Jake. He'd need to be better behaved than he is now but I need dreams. Staffyluv I'm in Turramurra, if you need stopover I could just keep Jake indoors and Zig outdoors. Raineth I desperately wanted to muzzle Jake but his face doesn't lend itself to a muzzle. I think the confidence would be good, in today's litigious society having my dog not able to bite would be peace of mind. It's all very well to say the other dog shouldn't be out etc but as the owner of a reactive bull breed I know I'm going to start on the back foot. Eta; Your pictures not wrong Raineth , the baby ducks quickly learn to beg food off me and since Jakes normally one step behind me if they can't find me they'll go beg off him. Silly monkeys!
  13. I'm no expert but apparently with dogs there's a fight or flight decision to make when being approached by potentially aggressive dogs. If your dogs on leash, particularly if they're under control there's no flight option so it has to be fight. This is why a dog on leash may act differently and is sometimes more aggressive than when off leash. Hard to know without an expert watching but I have heard of some dogs that appear to be dog aggressive actually being a frustrated greeter. They want to greet the dog but can't because of the leash so get aggressive. I think there's something on K9 pros' website. Might be an idea to get a behaviorist in to give you their opinion, there's a difference between a trainer and a behaviorist as I found out. My experience is only related to my own DA dog so don't take it as gospel but once they get DA it's a huge problem so it might be worth getting it sorted before she develops a problem. Mines a rescue so we don't know for sure why he has a problem but from what I know of his past it may have been a combination if no flight option and being wrongly exposed to other dogs.
  14. It's a good picture because now I desperately want to see the rest of the whippet. Really , really to the point of annoying want to see what the other end looks like????
  15. Mmm where's circus when you need her. I wonder if when she's out of her comfort zone she oays more attention to you? Or she knows where to expect dogs in your normal area. It's a bit sad to give up on the idea of Jake having a friend. He's such a gentle dog in all other ways, yesterday he ended up wandering into the middle of a batch of ducklings and the mother jumped on him three times. I called him and he just couldn't get away from her fast enough. Even with her jumping on his face he made no attempt to bite. He has made huge improvements at obedience and seems to enjoy going. He's a funny character and the trainers seem to really like him so it's a really positive experience for both of us and its good to feel that we are going forward. I feel like I'm so much more confident as well. Strange thing is that enjoy bossing my dog around, not quite sure what to make of it.
  16. Jake update....So going with the opinion he will never be dog friendly and just making him into a very obedient dog around other dogs we worked on a distracted recall yesterday. I always carry treats when I'm in the garden and call him over treat him and release so he has a fair recall. At training he's pretty anxious so he doesn't really leave my side to sniff around but yesterday we ignored him and chatted and waited until he got sucked in by one of the kennel dogs barking and then recalled him. The first few times I had to reel him in pretty hard with the long leash but in the end I could get him to leave off barking and come racing back and sit properly with super focus. I do like the extra level of zoom I get when other dogs are around. Bulldog chanellling his inner border collie is great.
  17. Boxers and bulldogs get picked on by other dogs because apparently the face folds make it difficult to read them. Maybe there's a bit of that for her plus the extra size could just freak other dogs out. It may be nothing she's doing just her different look, poor girl.
  18. Yep done that lift and grab. A determined cav was wandering loose and decided it had to say hello to my reactive bulldog. I can get him over my shoulder but then I'm off balance to move so just stood yelling in the street. I'm practiced at avoiding fights, with mine it's a weekly thing but have no idea how I would cope if it came down to it. I tend to be the hands in the air screaming type so I do hope we never find out.
  19. Yearerday whilst standing in the middle if the street having a very large GSD dart in and around me. the owner casually strolled down his driveway, let his other dog out and then told me "Don't worry he won't bite." No shoot shinola, I'm about to be run over or whatever it is your dogs intending to do when he darts in with his mouth open and showing me very large teeth. I'm comforted to know you think it's not biting!
  20. Hi,this is a quiet thread so whilst I presently own a rescue bulldog cross I will attempt to answer. Some bulldogs will and some won't put new tyres on the vets Porsche, a reputable breeder can help cut down the bill but genetics is always a lottery and bulldogs have inherent design faults that need maintenance. My purebreds had no temperament issues my cross does, read the rescue and rehoming sites and again a good breeder is your best chance. A bulldog needs company, all the time, they aren't set and forget occasional walk type dogs. As far as I know $3500 will be a fair opening price. A show dog may be more and sometimes a breeder may have an older dog for slightly less. One of my previous females was an ex breeding bitch, from a reputable breeder this is a great option to get a good dog. If they bred from her then she's likely to be sound. In summary they are high maintenance but if you're committed then a bulldog is a worthwhile experience. A good breeder a must with this breed.
  21. It's the designer dog thing fooling your average owner. I remember the days when "woopsie" Heinz varieties were practically given away because people were too stupid to slap a label on and charge a fortune. Marketing is everything. It's a pity because there are some genuine breeds in development, but most pet shop dogs are just Heinz with a label and not intended to do any good for any breed just line the pockets of the humans involved.
  22. I have a bulldog and can't fit a muzzle, but I've always thought if I could have it would have given me more confidence. My experience seems that anything that increases my confidence increases Jakes. I'd give it a go, more walks out and about will surely make him happier.
  23. We had the funniest experience today. A little dog rushed up to bark at us, I got Jake sitting with pb and told the little guy to sit. I've found surprisingly that many dogs will actually listen and sit quietly. He sat and started sniffing the air. Lots of air hoovering and he must have decided he wanted in on the peanut butter because he started doing little sits with his legs waving and turning in circles. I was in absolute stitches, he finally walked off in a huff. I will treat dogs if I have the owners permission so I felt bad for being a meanie but I've been chuckling all day.
