  1. Are frames safe to feed to brachy breeds like pugs and frenchies? Do you have to cut them up or mince them or can you just give them whole? I've heard of people giving them to their dogs but have never been game enough to do it. Ta!
  2. My rotts have all been mad swimmers, they were all docked as well, my first girl used to nearly pull me over so she could walk through puddles she loved the water so much. she used to swim out so far in the lake she was just a little head gliding around, the first time she did it I nearly had heart failure but she eventually came back and after that I never worried about her swimming ability. My rottie boy used to surf, it was funny to see him bobbing around waiting for the next wave so he could catch it in. My frenchie is another story! I've heard of frenchies drowning in backyard pools. I think they are too heavy in the head and chest to swim well, if at all.
  3. The original report indicated that the tip was open, as a concerned member of the public reported it, now the council is claiming the tip was closed? regardless, the ranger's actions were unnecessary and unacceptable. God I hate local government. Incompetent, cruel and self serving.
  4. I find it so depressing that I am actually of the same species as the hideous creatures that are involved in this. There is a FB group if anyone is interested in joining: Can't get the link to work - Citizens of the Hunter United AGAINST Dog Fighting
  5. I'm with you Donski. A lot of laws are put in place just because they can be, sometimes not for any good reason other than some little despot, especially on a local council, expanding his or her power base. Dogs and dog owners are easy targets. We are far too over governed and need to make a stand sometimes. Viva la revolution!
  6. Yes, that's the line I take in those situations then I ask to see a copy of the publication that may be referred to and unless they can justify the order with validity I ignor them. How arrogant. Do you take this line with the police too? Bit of a difference between being given a lawful direction by a police officer and being bossed around by some low level council employee. I'd be ignoring him too. :)
  7. I saw the stories about Tank being missing and was at work when I read the herald story about him being found dead on the side of the road and I cried. Everyone was asking me what was wrong. I can't even imagine what his family is going through. Poor poor baby, and all the other much loved dogs who have died such a horrible death. Please everyone in the Hunter region keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles specially a white hi lux with dog cages on the back. Apparently the first three letters in the number plate is something like AWW. Maybe we should be ringing the police and demanding they do something about it.
  8. Regarding chicken frames, I've never been game enough to give one to my frenchie, do you just give them whole or cut them up or what? are they ok to give to braccy breeds? I give him chicken necks smashed with a meat tenderiser and cut into small pieces.

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. She was a beautiful girl and I miss her terribly.
  10. Does anyone know of any fully fenced dog parks in Newcastle/Lake Macquarie/Central Coast? There's certainly a lot of leash free areas around here but I'm after a fully enclosed area for a smaller dog who doesn't have very good recall yet - we're working on it! thanks

SABINA Nowstarin Zodiac Ruler 27/8/01 - 8/6/12 You became a member of our family at five months old, you weren't cut out to be a show dog! You and my son were best buddies, young pups together, lots of fun playing in the mud and swimming in the creek. You were so patient and kind with him, such a beautiful temperament. Your favourite things: eating, eating more, chasing bubbles and attacking the sprinkler. You loved riding in the car but pity about the dribble all over the windows! Such a beautiful big girl, gentle, affectionate and loving. So friendly and happy with everyone you met, you were such a wonderful example of your breed. We miss you beanie. It was a terribly hard decision to make to give you your wings and I hope you forgive me. I hope you are happy and not in pain anymore. Give my love to Alex and Boney, I'll see you all again one day.
  12. Love rottweilers, they are so noble and beautiful, and all the bullbreeds especially frenchies. least favourite are ACD's - I just don't trust them, don't really know why.
  13. lillysmum, have you considered applying for Vetpay? they will lend up to $2000 for vet bills and you can pay it off every fortnight. My vet told me they are pretty good lending to people on centrelink benefits as well. You would at least be able to get some xrays done which might show just what you and Lilly are facing at the moment. All the best to you both.
  14. Thank you to everyone for your support and for thinking of us today. Sabina was given her wings at 2.45pm. She went to sleep with me feeding her liver treats and telling her what a very good girl she was. I went to feed my cat this evening and automatically picked up her dinner bowl as well. I catch myself looking for her and wondering why she isn't lying in the doorway and tripping everyone over when they try to pass. The house feels wrong, someone is missing. When I'm in a better frame of mind I will put some pics of her on the rainbow bridge forum. thanks again xx
  15. Thank you to all who replied. If the cancer had been found earlier, then I would definitely have tried an holistic approach to treatment but it is too far gone now. Trifecta, best wishes to you and Rogan on your own battle with this awful disease. I hope his journey is a gentle one. Yesterday when Sabina woke up she was unable to bear weight on her front leg, and I'm so worried she has fractured it further. She is now getting around having to use her rear leg with the ruptured cruciate, which must be so painful for her. As hard as this is for me, it is obviously much harder for her. I can't put her through this anymore. I have booked Sabina in to be euthanised on Friday afternoon. I am a wreck.
  16. This is my first post on dogzonline and I wish it wasn't for such a sad reason. I'm hoping I can get some advice that will help make my girl's last few weeks more comfortable. Sabina is nearly 11. Recently she became lame in her back leg and the vet diagnosed a ruptured cruciate ligament by manipulating the leg. She didn't do any x rays or any other diagnostic procedures. I always get a second opinion so I took her to another vet, who said he was concerned due to her age and breed, and he did a full set of x rays last thursday. When I went to pick her up he gave me the devastating news. She has a large primary osteosarcoma on the elbow of her front leg and the bone also has a fracture in it due to the cancer. Her cruciate problem was the result of another lesion on her back leg, and she also has nodules in her heart. He said it was inoperable and untreatable and to take her home until I felt ready to have her put to sleep. She appears quite happy at the moment. Obviously she is limping due to her cruciate, but she gets around quite well, she is eating and drinking normally, she's always had a good apetite. She has been prescribed previcox once a day. How do I know if she is in pain? i feel she must be with all that cancer, but she doesn't show it. i don't want to keep her alive if she is suffering, but I also don't want to put her to sleep if she is still happy and enjoying her life, which she appears to be. i don't know what to do for the best. This is so hard. Is there anything else I can do for her now? Is the medication she is on enough, or should she be prescribed something else to help with pain relief? My poor girl.
