  1. I have been using Propalin to contol Ellie's incontinence for a well over a year, this is the first time she has been on medication for it, and am finding that the Propalin isn't always effective. I have been back to the vet's a couple of times to get the dosage right, but nevertheless, it always seems to be only ever an intermittent control. Another DOLer said to me the other day that she is also using Propalin and finds that it loses effectiveness once near the end of the bottle. I am now using the last of a bottle and it has lost effectiveness. Has anyone else experienced this? Or is it just coincidence? I asked the vet about this and she was very interested, but had not had anyone else comment on this. Also, I notice that Ellie's incontinence can manifest itself after exercise. Has anyone else experienced this as well?
  2. Roxy was in the kennels on the last 2 days we were there, so we got to meet her and take her to agility as well. I'm booked in for the October block but may change to December Nope, they slept all the way down and were of no use whatsoever
  3. Hi Jennifer :D Have you had a look at the Regal Mini Sulkies site? http://www.rjwalsh.com.au/mini/ I've been wanting one of these since I saw it on 'The New Inventors' on the ABC If you are going to do something, let me know, please ;) My Dallies (and me, too) would love to do something like this.
  4. The Dally is my girl, Ellie. I was the only silly one who took dogs As jbbb said, the course is awesome, I just hope that I can retain all of the information we were given and understand my (quickly written) notes
  5. Maybe I had better rephrase. When a dog cocks it's leg, it is always marking over the top of another dog's mark, not just relieving itself. Dogs don't cock just to urinate, they can squat to achieve that. Sqatting in 'little girl ways' ( ) to mark is quite normal behaviour as well. I'm guessing that squating v cocking is related to heirachy or pack status, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
  6. That's correct, a dog will only cock it's leg to urinate over another dog's 'mark', there has to be a previous 'mark' to instigate cocking of the leg. If your dog is squatting it is probably either just relieving itself or leaving a 'mark' where no other dogs has before. The next dog to come along and urinate on that spot will cock it's leg. Squatting and cocking to urinate are both quite normal behaviours.
  7. Yes, this is my theory, too. My dogs have never been taught to heel, I have no use for it. When we are out walking they are free to explore to the end of the lead as they need to investigate their environment as well as walk. Dogs use about 10% of their brain function for smell and allowing them to sniff (mental stimualtion) is just as important as the physical exercise. It would be like us going for a car ride wearing a blindfold if you don't allow you dog to use it's senses. Of course, that has to happen in appropriate circumstances If I want my dogs to heel, I simply shorten the lead. A trainer once taught me that the difference between a tight lead and a loose lead is quite minimal.
  8. Thanks, GM. I was a bit worried that as Supercoat for Sensitive Skin is a lot cheaper than other premium dry foods, so was wondering about the quality. I have heard a few people say that it is OK, so I will stick with it. I originally started using it as Toby had big red welts on his stomach that he scratched until they bled and after changing to the 'sensitive skin' formula the welts have cleared up and he has been fine.
  9. I normally mix the dry and home made food together each night, 1 cup of my mix with half a cup of dry per dog, and I scatter a cup of dry out in the back yard each morning as a bit of a treasure hunt for them. It keeps them entertained for a good half hour as they search for the food. I do just give them dry sometimes when I run out of the mix, too. The dry I use is Supercoat for sensitive skin. While Supercoat doesn't have a very good name, I've been told that the one for sensitive skin is OK as it is chicken and rice. Anyone else had any experience with this variety of Supercoat?
  10. I feed my 2 adults a mix (which I make up myself) of chicken mince, rice, veges put through the blender, eggs and fish oil. I also feed lamb or chicken bones daily. I supplement the mince, rice and vege mix with a a good quality dry food. I avoid beef and liver as it is supposedly high in purines, which causes problems with Dallies unique urinary tract.
  11. I'm another in the waiting brigade, have been since this time last year
  12. I'm enrolled to do the distance education course when it starts. Was last told the earliest it would begin is in August and that there is quite a few people (100's) on the waiting list. JBB, I've paid an enrollment fee and my first insallment for the course, so I'm assuming that others would have done the same so the course would be full, even though it hasn't been finalised. It was supposed to start at the begining of this year and payments were made last year. As you say, NDTF aren't very good at getting back to you, I ring them every month or so. Seems there has been a turnover of staff as well, which hasn't helped things. Must add, though, that the staff are very helpful and apologetic when I ring them.
  13. I often put a couple of capfuls or so of eucalyptus disinfectant in the dogs' bath water and it kills fleas instantly, using wool wash does the same.
  14. I run my 2 dalmatians with a bike. I have a double ended lead, clips both ends, that I loop around the bike's frame. They do pull a little when we start off, but within 100m or so settle down to trot beside the front wheel. I guess being bred to trot beside horse and carriages it is quite natural for dallys to do this. I like the idea of having the dogs run further back beside the seat rather than the front wheel, never had a problem but it would seem safer. Looked at the site and it said that for 2 dogs to run them on either side ie a walky dog on left and right hand sides. Has any one used a brace with only 1 walky dog ie both dogs on the 1 side? I really think I may have to invest in one of these. Good topic Just as an interest has anyone seen the Regal Mini Sulky site? That looks awesome for running dogs. Bryan Edited cos I still can spell or type
