If You Could Trial Any Breed....
ness replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Awwww Blaize isn't that bad Ptolomy and a bloody good worker when she chooses . I have worked all of Sandi's kids . And I could honestly steal all of them (but Lexi would be the easiest to hide ). -

Oi Ptolomy but some of us have taken it on board and who gave some lovely signals at the last trial ;) - well at least I think I did. Now to tidy up that bloody sit in the COP you were bagging me about. Have to say though the new drop is stunning if I don't say so myself :D . Stand well hmmmm sorry the baby in training still doesn't stand and Ness's isn't going to change so will have to take a rain check on that one. -

Ptolomy - you know Lexi would love to come live with me - I'd throw her a zillion balls all day long and she would never want to go home . Sticks hand up in the air for being lucky enough to work another dog. Hmmm I think Ptolomy should come for another visit as Kenzie might just persuade her that certain BCs are worth working . In fact I think she is part toller but we better not tell her breeder otherwise she might never let you near her dogs or puppies again. -

Ok well taken as given I love my BCs since I now own two. I have also been privileged enough to work the most gorgeous aussie and an equally gorgeous toller so either of those two breeds would have to run a close second. Wait no its probably not the breed can't I just steal a certain couple of red dogs and a certain aussie . Watch out Ptolomy . -
I like tents in the middle of winter and gazebos in the middle of summer .

My girl had a dicey tunmy for a week or so after she arrived and I was told to feed her cooked chicken and rice. I think at first I was only feeding a tablespoon or so and more rice then chicken did that for a few days before reintroducing her dry food.

Your right angelsun. My older girl does agility and I reward her with treats. She will occasionally tug before we go into the ring but only if she is frustrated (more so now if I have her sister out doing something before getting her out to run). I haven't tried flyball but I know one of my friends said there food motivated BC would run faster then there toy motivated dog because they new the reward didn't come until they got back to the handler whereas the toy motivated dog was in part rewarded by retrieving the ball and was therefore slower on the return. I would just use what works for the dog and not stress if the dog won't tug (just because you believe its the in thing to do). My younger girl tugs but then she isn't as into food.

Traning An Obedience Dog To Do Agility
ness replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I do both with mine and haven't ever had the whole right side/left side issue. She was trained for obedience until she was 12 months and then we also picked up agility. She has her CDX (trialling UD at the moment) as well as a JDM and passes towards her ADM (just needs another 2). She is has much more potential as an obedience dog because she isn't super fast. -

There are three dogs who are both Obedience Champs and Agility Champs so it can be done  . -
Sounds like I have some more shopping to do - thanks for the advice K9.

Not strictly TOT but sort of in that I am trying to work out what would be an appropriate size Orbee ball on a rope for my baby girl. I have a medium one which she is obsessed with to the point that I had to hide it to stop her stealing it as a baby pup. She is now 7 months old and I was thinking I would reintroduce it for training but not sure if she might need a small one. The medium is quite large in her mouth. She is only 12kgs and I don't think will get a huge amount bigger. Ooops forgot to mention she is a BC. Would people recommend I purchase a small one or should be medium one be suitable.

LP - I think on the Obedience side of things they reworded a few of the UDX exercises (so it was a UDX rule review only). Not sure about the agility.

RIP Dear Odin. May you have fun rounding up all the rainbow bridge sheepies your hearts desire. Hugs to Veanna and your family.

If might not be meant to but it could (if a lawyer wanted to try and argue a point then trust me the definition could include that). -

Thats a bit what I was getting at Jessca - the dog was already exhibiting the behavior and it was about getting control of something the dog was already doing in an uncontrolled instance. Sure I could have punished her as a method of controlling it but I didn't think that appropriate in the circumstances based on her temperament and considering I really did want a dog with good tug/play/toy drive. -

ok I didn't admit to setting out to train it but because she does it I thought I better go about creating a situation I was in charge of and could control. If she was going to do it I needed to be able to stop her doing it and what better what to get a good stop if you can also then allow the dog to do so when you say. She is also a quiet and slightly timid girl so I was hesitant of shutting down to much drive if I discouraged it to early on. So there was method in my madness. Mainly she gets tug toys or leads. If she was a more outgoing sort I probably would have put a stop to it sooner but everything about her interactions with anybody other than family is gentle so I am not to worried if she gets over the top with me. I guess what it comes down to is you decide what you want to do with a particular type of dog and that shouldn't be dictated by legislation. -

I was reading that thinking are pups all going to be declared dangerous until they reach a certain age. They all bite, tug, growl at people. I have encouraged my pup to tug on my jumper so I have something I can reward with any time however that would mean she would be declared dangerous under this proposed legislation. She certainly doesn't try it on a stranger and neither do I encourage it. The other example I could imagine would be what if you clipped the dogs lead around your waist and the dog had been taught to tug on the lead and decided to jump up at you to get the lead. -
Will he retrieve the toy. My BC girl has a very high retrieving drive so what I do is occasionally throw in my recall word when she is already in the middle of hooning back to me with the toy/ball for another throw. She is still in the stage of me mainly calling her when she is coming anyway as I want it to be super solid before I take my chance of calling her. She is also of an age where she might chose not to come so I try and prevent that and if I need her I'll go get her or I'll throw the ball let her retrieve it to me and then put her on-lead (not always though and yep occasionally she will go back on lead and I'll let her off again and keep playing).

Camp Tailwaggers - Gold Coast
ness replied to Ann - Camp Tailwaggers's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Not sure F&B - how does it differ from people advertising things like K9 force giving seminars in various places. You will notice that one of the events advertised is a free day of obedience run runouts for whoever wishes to attend. As for Tassie and LP - I had the good fortune of spending a night up at Ann's earlier in the year (dogless) and attending one of the normal Sat club classes they hold there. Its certainly a fantastic set up and maybe one day I'll get back there with a dog. -
Interesting when I went to get my pups second vaccination I was offered a C4 but if I wanted a C3 they could do that instead. My older girl has a C4. The vet and I discussed at some length which I should get and the consensus was a C4. Apparently the strain of KC covered in the C4 component is the really nasty strain which isn't as treatable (or can be more life threatening) whereas the extra strain covered by C5 isn't as horrific. Not sure if that is all true or not but I opted for the C4. The vet certainly wasn't pushing a C5 and my girls regularly attend club training/trials.

This was Ptolomy's criticism: Also next time you do a hoop session stand up - so the food is further away from her and give her time to think about what you want - I can see her looking and then you keep stepping in and luring her again.

Dances With Dogs
ness replied to Ann - Camp Tailwaggers's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I already work my two together and whenever we have done pet expos and been hanging around I'll use to quite often borrow Piper another BC and would muck around with both Ness and Piper together . One of the clubs I am considering joining up next year is going to offer freestyle for fun, they are also going to run IMPROV obedience classes which is sort of a cross between Rally and normal obedience. I was playing around with one of the exercises last night with Ness and its an absolute scream. There was also talk on dancing with dogs judges at the herding trial a few weeks back and they weren't sure there were too many people in the state who would be eligible to become judges so they couldn't see it taking off. -
Ptolomy I am over it considering she can now go the length of our front nature strip and sit in the hoop. Its also interesting that she had no problems generalizing it to a box even without having the hoop there. A friend had the UD gear out at agility one evening and I thought I would just try and see what happened. Within a matter of about 5 minutes she was offering going 5-6 m reliably and sitting in the box.
