There is a black and silver gene in Giant Schnauzers, so it could well be a b/s - which is thought to be a variant of the black/tan gene. b/s puppies are born with markings varying from a very dark brown/black through to creamy white, the darker markings turning into a silver and the cream puppy turning into a white marking. Was there a reason that the other colours were ruled out of the breed? With such a strong working background, I would have thought most of those colours would have been fine?

My dogs were the same when I had flu a couple of years ago, I also had a newborn litter at the time, so thankfully mum was just great with her pups and I had just enough energy to feed the dogs and let them out for a pitstop. Lovely to have a canine rug keeping me warm and comforted while I felt so ill.

I disagree to a degree about being in a rush to desex. A friend had a pup with one undecended teste and it was already going cancerous when he was desexed at 10 months old, vet advised it could have gone nasty if they had waited any longer. Of course, it could just be your pup sucked one back up while at the vets, have you checked him when he is relaxed at home?

If I have had someone else drive then pup has travelled on my lap, covered in a towel. Longer trips of 4+ hours have been in a crate in the back of the car. also take along kitchen roll, spray cleaner and plastic bags to clear away any mess in the car (just incase pup is car sick) I've never had a problem with a pup who wants to be on my knee after the trip or a pup who was bothered about going into a crate on later trips/bedtime.

Giant Schnauzers fit the ,bill so long as they've had their daily exercise they are happy couch potatoes. They have been bred to be a versatile breed, I have done show, obedience, agility and tracking with my old girl and will be working more towards show and IPO with the new pup. The hard coated dogs need very little coat care and have minimal shedding (would need a clip/trim every 3 months and if you hand stripped the coat, just half an hour a week working on the body coat) Play style tends to be some running, body slamming and standing up on back legs to 'box' if the other dog is up for that too. They tend to shape their play style to suit the other dog. They have a different work style to BCs and GSD, in that they won't do things just to please you ad won't keep repeating the same exercise (they like to get it right first time!) so training should be kept varied and fun and if you want to practise eg the present, then it should be worked into the daily activities instead of doing 10 minutes of just the present as the giant will get bored and start to try alternative ways instead of trying to improve!

best solution is to get a friend to pop in at lunchtime to give the pups their lunch

Private Conformation Trainers Wgtn? Advice?
becks replied to Maddy27's topic in General Dog Discussion
Her back looks very roached up and she has dropped her front end which would suggest she is very stressed about it all or in pain. How does she stand naturally without you trying to stack her? -
Note to others, name your dog Sway or get a blue dog Some more are being dropped off to the embroidery place today. Yet again not quite close enough, I have a dog called Blue who is a mini schnauzer

pleased to say the giant schnauzer owned by my friend who I travelled with to the show was graded excellent both days and placed 3rd in open bitch at the french championship. I am still trying to catch up on sleep!

I am soo tired after coming home from WDS, saw some great dogs and people, missed a lot more as the breeds were on at the same time. The French champ show was held in the morning and WDS sarting after 12.30pm so that made some very early starts.

The one who lives near me is this colour http://brtinfo.ru/dog.php?screen=1&userif=2&id=15808 black with marks is how it is described on that database.

Thank you for your links. I was just wondering where ther black and silver colouring (ie where the silver phantom markings) came from, that the RBT I saw photos of the other day has. Is it from the GS as they can be born b/s occasionally or it is a corruption of the black and tan dogs behind the RBT? Are RBT born any other non recognised colours?

half the oz show world but no dolers?

Look at Nina Ottosons own website, she has Bouviers but also talks about training your dog to use the toys properly and not being allowed to just chew their way through. These are designed to be used with your dog, not left with the dog are a boredom buster while you are out all day.

I use the Nina Ottoson toys with my dogs and the last litter enjoyed them to. I have the Tornado and Brick

I think they meant that slow to eat treats will disrupt the flow of your lesson, but it really depends on what you are training and where (distraction levels) At club with pups I use boiled chicken at home I use fish4dogs mini kibble which is exactly the same as their star treats (just without the pointy bits!) I also use the end of roasts, whatever I have going spare the dogs can have kidney is another fav as i can never get liver to cook and stay in one peice!

There are plenty of groomers and exhibitors here who can answer those questions!

Where The Heck Am I Going Wrong?
becks replied to TessiesTracey's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
People who like you to go to them generally are like this as they want to see how you treat their dog (some want to see you are doing a good grooming job and off 'helpful' suggestions) but I found when I made the jump from grooming in peoples homes to opening my shop, then nearly everyone agreed to bring their dogs to me, only the few without transport or with dogs who had issues with car travel didn't come with me (although I did offer to collect a few dogs, it was a big chunk out of the grooming time and when I could have been in the shop getting more clients) -
Is anyone flying over for the show? I am going over to the show next week and really looking forward to getting to see dogs only seen in photos before and getting to meet the breeders IRL. More info about it here http://www.cedia.fr/

Sorry for your shock and loss.

I do the same as mystyqueview, I allow a certain amount of choice in the decision, stearing a family away from any unsuitable pup (might say it is sold or reserved)

Now I see why i get confused over the name, using initials I always say RBT (as that is how the breed is known in the UK) but using full name i often say black russian (but then that is also vodka and coke! lol ) Anyway, the reason I am here in this thread today. I have just homed a pup with a family who have an RBT which is black and silver, a colour which appears sometimes in Giant Schnauzers, so it got me wondering does anyone know what colour/breeding for the GS used in the development of the RBT? I have come across the names DASSO & DITTER v.DRANHENSHLUCHT but have no further info on them, I have also seen a dog called ROY was used, but again no more info on him. Can anyone fill in the blanks or point me to a website?

I'd put your dog on a lead so you can control the enthusiasm of her meetings with the cavs, only allow her to approach when she is calmer. One thing that hasn't been mentioned earlier in this thread is that you can use a dogs want to go play with another dog as a reward for focus/training, just as you might with a toy or a treat.

If there are particular breeds you are interested in, I find breed clubs often have cheap booklets on how to groom the breed correctly and the detail is a lot better then in 'general how to groom A-Z breed books'

Where The Heck Am I Going Wrong?
becks replied to TessiesTracey's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When i started, I had some basic equipment and a table and went to peoples houses, groomed the dogs there and used their bath to wash the dogs (or kitchen sink if the dog was small enough!) I think I ended up grooming in every type of room in a house from downstairs loo, conservatory, garden shed, garage, kitchen etc. Only overheads was keeping the car running between clients homes. Once a client base is built up, I then moved to having a shop (although when i move I will look at having a room in the house/outhouse for grooming). Sounds like now is the time to take that step and if you have some spare money, get an advert in the local paper to let people know where you have gone - or better yet, think of a story to get some free advertising.
