  1. On the news they said the vet said he was in good health
  2. Beau is returned home! Yay https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/wa/a/25239960/beautiful-beau-returned-home/
  3. If it is a public area why are the horse people allowed to leave the poo where it falls I understand the volume is different but is that a reasonable excuse? Apart from that I really don't have a problem sharing areas but think it could be quite dangerous for horse, rider and dogs?
  4. Maybe you should have a box that asks No heath conditions? :)
  5. Oh gosh, that must have been terrifying. I am glad that things seem to be improving no doubt due to the excellent care you have given. I am sorry I don't have any advice or knowledge to impart but I wish you all the very best and hope that it was a once off and things continue to improve.
  6. I didn't even know brewers used rice except when making sake :D Anyway, as I said I don't know enough about it and I agree that on paper the ingredients look very cheap and nasty.
  7. It is interesting that Brewers Yeast does seem to have some beneficial qualities when fed to dogs. However I think the dose is around 1 teaspoon per day, depending on the size of the dog. I don't think it is a bad ingredient but I am not sure if having it as the first listed ingredient makes for a good thing? I haven't done any in-depth research into this so I wouldn't be prepared to make any educated comment on it as a food ingredient. http://downeastdognews.villagesoup.com/p/ask-the-vet-question-about-brewers-yeast/908024 http://www.vetinfo.com/the-benefits-of-brewers-yeast-for-dogs.html#b
  8. Thanks Hankdog, You make some very good points, I really need to get my plan in order. I also think you have clarified what should theoretically be a simple concept - I should just be a bit quicker to pop a lead on in this environment and not feel "put out" by doing so. I will ponder this further as I am probably doing a bit of everything.
  9. What you are saying does make perfect sense. Its a tough one for sure as he no doubt benefits physically from running with the greyhounds but you are right I don't necessarily want him to desire "play" so much. The thing I love so much about the greys is that the play is simply full pelt running without things like wrestling or bighty face. More to ponder I guess.
  10. Thanks very much :) Interestingly my topic that I want to discuss with our trainer next week is decreasing the value of other dogs. I work on it while walking every day but fear the run around sessions at the park may limit my success. I am pretty sure I know that my trainer will recommend me staying away from parks I will just have to keep plugging away and take on board the advice I get. I do feel it is pretty important that he is social with other dogs due to our desire to start dry land mushing next year and join the WA club- urghh caring for a dog is meant to be good for the health, but I feel the stress sometimes.
  11. This is how they played the first time they met, but yes they now know each other. The first round was Ronin chasing and they swap roles. I am lucky I guess as the owner now texts me when she is going to the park in the morning and we meet up. I discussed my worries of the park with her and me not wanting to go in the evening times. Her comment were basically that she and her dog Tigger love their play sessions and has urged me to continue meet ups. Interestingly all of the greyhound people including the Iggy people love Ronin's play. I just pick and choose times to go now, I also keep a hawk-eye on him never let my dog get away with any rude behaviour. I will continue working with my trainer in helping Ronin be the best canine citizen I can :)
  12. Here is a little vid I took a couple of days ago, this is pretty normal in my opinion...
  13. Ah okay great thanks for that . I have heard so many tales of disasters when people have cats with huskies that I wanted to ask. Having said that there are people who have had success with cats and huskies but it sounds like it is usually exceptions to the rule and I am sure that ignorance in some owners equates to so many huskies being surrendered
  14. Sounds a bit like husky life. I think he is under the impression that they will be okay with a cat??? I know that they are a spitz breed and there is no way I would be able to have a cat with my Husky, but I suppose the size difference is less significant with a Shibu. As I said I have no direct experience with Shibu except for a bit of play with my husky at a fenced in park. What you say makes me seriously doubt that cohabitation with a cat is wise??
  15. Hello, I have a friend interested in getting a Shiba Inu in the near future. I have stressed the importance of waiting in order to get his dog from a good breeder with good lines, health and temperament and of course staying away from any unknowns on gumtree etc. The dog will not be shown or bred so limited register is what I would be recommending. He is in Perth but I imagine flying in the right puppy from intestate would also be a viable option. I would love to be able to help him in getting a great dog and would appreciate any advice. I have looked at the DOL breeder pages but as they are a breed I am not overly familiar with I thought it better to ask the brains trust here first prior to direct contact with breeders. I know the purchase price is not a factor with him, but I would like to be able to advise on an expected price range from a reputable breeder. Please feel free to PM me anything that needs confidentiality. Many thanks.
  16. I agree with others that recommend getting advice from the breeder and also the statements saying the best food is the one you dog does best on. I think that a breeder with a number of dogs may have to make some compromises to find the best food fit for the entire pack. I am only guessing here though. One dog in the pack may have an allergy or sensitivity that requires a certain food and separate feeding may not be possible. I recall talking to our breeder who has always recommended RC to start the puppies off with. Later she decided to try Taste of the Wild due to many recommendations and the higher meat content. Unfortunately one of the dogs got an upset tummy so she had to go back to the other for the whole pack. I moved my boy onto TOTW from the RC around 2-3 weeks after we got him and he did really well on it. Our breeder was very happy that Ronin did well on this food. He is now on fully prey model raw and our breeder is thrilled that we can offer this diet and at how good 'her baby' looks :) With me only having only one dog means that I don't have to worry about problems a pack might have with guarding bones or changing foods for individual requirements. A Frenchie group or Frenchie people here will be able to answer everything better than me, but if I had one small dog and wanted a top prepackaged dry/semi-dry food and money was no option I would probably go for ZiwiPeak Fish and Venison . Remember with these foods a 5kg bag of this semi/moist = around 15kg of many dried kibbles. I use the ZIwiPeak as treats when I am grooming my boy or swapping a treat for a toy he has stolen from my daughter if I don't have fresh meat offerings on hand :D
  17. Do you mind me asking what they did to him? I apologise if this is something you have already discussed previously. I have to say again that it is such a great turnaround for your sweet boy and demonstrates the great care you give :)
  18. This makes me very angry. How can one consider euthanising a puppy for owner error ? The owner doesn't deserve to keep dogs or guinea pigs. When I got my Husky one of the questions in our application was specifically asking whether we kept any small animals as pets.
  19. ... all I know is that Ronin is very gentle with small dogs at the park. I think that as the Italian Greyhound club posted pics and vids on their Facebook page of Ronin with their dogs is a good example of it, they said how lovely and well behaved he is :) . Ronin has also been very gentle with a couple of elderly ladies with very small fluffy dogs. I receive heaps of comments and compliments from such people including a couple of trainers who have been at the park. One taking a puppy class and another teaching in her own words "naughty dogs" I realise there are shortcomings in training but we do not shy away from it, we have a trainer and the less than perfect things are works-in-progress :)
  20. I imagine your Iggy's coat would be very similar to my Manchester (can see every little mosquito bump on her! So short and flat) for a while there her skin was dry and being black it was very visible so I would use this after each wash as a final rinse : Hi Shine Hot oil treatment on this page: http://www.highlandparkshowhorses.com/shop-hishine.html#ho it is for horses but worked well - I would use a lid full (about a tablespoon) but really a teaspoon - tablespoon of coconut or jojoba oil in about a litre of warm water would do just as well. Now I don't seem to need to do it as often, I figure that must be because of her diet. That HG Serum looks very interesting too. Have you used that one?
  21. I hear you... you have quoted what I said at the very beginning of the thread. I am not sure if you have read the entire thread but I have taken onboard all of the comments throughout this thread and my attitude to the whole situation has changed.
