  1. It is quite interesting. The rocks are Zeolite and it is supposed to convert nitrogen which along with ammonia in urine is very strong. They seem to say it converts nitrogen in water, but tap water has no traceable nitrogen that I can find when I test it with aquarium test kits - especially as nitrogen is deadly to fish?? So this conversion must happen internally within the dog. They say it doesn't affect PH levels which I would agree (at least from a water parameter perspective) but where does this conversion of nitrogen in urine take place, if not from the stomach or bladder and what does the nitrogen convert to? Nitrogen won't simply disappear it must be converted to something. Zeolite is used in aquaria extensively for improving water quality so there may be some aspect of improvement but it doesn't quite make sense to me, especially as you want these harmful toxins removed from the body by way of urine. The manufacturers state that this doesn't work well in dogs fed raw or high protein. So it is all a bit confusing to me and something I decided against especially as my boy is fed raw. I does seem to have positive reports from many users so I do not doubt that it works, but I personally would like more information on the effect of changing the water chemistry on my dogs system before I decided to use it. Anyway, this needs a more scientific mind than mine to evaluate :D
  2. You are doing a great job in taking care of him, it is not easy, but be kind to yourself during this stressful time - you are a great mum to Danny.
  3. Best wishes for a positive outcome from the specialist.
  4. Oh so you have changed your mind since your original post then? OK. Whatever. We HAVE discussed the increases to death :) I pulled up the other 41 discussion for you http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&fromMainBar=1 Thanks Florise, I must have missed the part where this aspect or potential reason for the increases was discussed. The simple thing would be to not read the topic if you have no interest :)
  5. I normally do around a teaspoon per 250ml so somewhere around 4 tsp per litre will be fine. I don't think you need to be too precise with the tea strength. :)
  6. This post is merely to discuss the possible reasons for increases in premiums which affect some of we pure breed owners. This site was created for pure bred dog discussion (ANKC recognised breeds) The primary purpose of this forum is to promote and discuss pure bred dogs (as recognised by the ANKC) so we ask you respect our aim when visiting here. If you own a cross breed dog, you are also welcome here, but we ask that you refer to it by its proper name (eg a pug-x or cavalier-x instead of the designer term 'pugalier'). This topic relates to how a type of dog is impacting pure breed dogs. there is no mention of any names. No denigration of pure bred dogs Speaks for itself. This is a primarily a pure bred dog forum (ANKC recognised breeds) and was created to promote and discuss these breeds. If you don't think pure bred dogs make the perfect pets, then maybe this forum is not for you. No denigration of pure breed dogs here. In any case, report it if you think this contravenes forum policy.
  7. I was reading on a UK based husky forum about a person complaining about the increases in Petplan premiums. Apparently there has been an 200% increase in claims from owners of these new 'designer breeds' that has caused the increases across the board Obviously this is all anecdotal so take it as you will :) My renewal is rapidly approaching so will see what happens with my premiums. In any case we have discussed the increases to death so this post is really only about this 'designer breed' fiasco :)
  8. I have a husky so we are talking major coat density with water shedding guard hairs :D I normally use between 500m and 1 litre to fully do my dog. But yeah, I found out the same thing on the first few occasions, I was using half a bucket to saturate him and even then it was patchy LOL. You can also use a spray bottle and hold the nozzle against the skin to squirt. A bike water bottle also works if you can't find a sauce bottle. A dab of superglue on the push/pull mouth piece stops it from collapsing when you press it to the fur and skin. I put a lady with a greyhound who I regularly meet up with at the park with. She was mentioning that she regularly takes her boy down to the beach and afterwards he always needed a bath due to itchiness - water rinsing doesn't seem to cut it. I spoke to her a couple of days ago and was so thrilled with how the tea worked! She is now recommending it to heaps of people for all sorts of contact itchiness etc. So another very happy convert there who is also adding it to food and using as an eye rinse when needed
  9. Happy Birthday Fritz - that face is priceless Happy Birthday Didi - what a gorgeous girl
  10. Happy Birthday Tibor, I hope you got lots of yummy treats :)
  11. I have noticed very little shedding of guard hairs since my husky has been on fully raw. There was much more when he was on mixed kibble and raw. He is blowing undercoat right now so nothing stops shedding per se. There is a theory that fully raw feeding reduces guard hair shedding (breaking in this instance) due to a healthier hair follicle. Proponents of raw feeding will argue that this nutrition cannot be replicated in a diet of processed kibble. I cannot comment on how true this is and can simply relate by own findings :) Either way, I must be doing something right as I am always getting comments on Ronin's condition from other dog owners, even from other husky owners I have met out and about, with their dogs coats that look vastly different to Ronins' Even the vet asked me about his diet as they normally follow the 'traditional' line of Hills Science diet  and he just said wow, don't change a thing
  12. I think that there are many people (obviously not on this forum) that consider anything above feeding the cheapest food and sleeping outside is spoiling your dog. By these standards my dog is spoilt as he gets the best food and healthcare, walks every day, heaps of toys, nice bedding, sleeps inside, personal training and health insurance. Most of us here would consider this to be pretty normal animal husbandry. Outsiders will think he is "spoilt". :D Our breeders says Ronin is very spoilt but it is meant in a positive way and refers to the care and enrichment we provide. She is thrilled at how we look after one of her babies, so I suppose it all boils down to how you interpret the word and its context. I consider over feeding to the point of any obesity to be literally "spoiling your dog" to me in this context it means "ruining your dog" by giving into excessive treat giving, table scraps and larger than needed meals. I was talking to a lady today with such an obese lab it was frightening and it is only 12 months old. She seemed embarrassed and asked how I keep my dog so fit. I asked he what she feeds and she says "oh we just cook sup an extra meal of what we are eating, last night it was steak and chips" then she says "oh I know he is spoilt" Hmmm, damn right he is "spoilt' he can't even run. I told her what I feed as she asked, I didn't want to lecture her so just gave her a few small tips and mentioned that she will save a hell of a lot of money with vet bills if she can turn it around. So again, I suppose it is all in the context - spoiling means different things to different people. When I saw this topic I took the word "spoilt" to be more of a light hearted word to talk about some of the unique things we do to make our dogs lives happier and fun :)
  13. Hi all, I just wanted to do a little post on my experience with colloidal silver for mucky eyes. Ronin may have picked up something at the park - dunno really, but I noticed he had more eye boogers than I thought normal, and then I noticed a slight green mucous in the mornings. I swabbed his eyes with a fresh brew of calendala tea and applied 2 drops of colloidal silver solution, the next day no more boogers or mucous. I have kept it up for 3 days now just to be sure that there was no reoccurrence and will probably continue for a few more days- I am super impressed with this stuff
  14. Oh dear, sending a hug to you and you little ones, you are giving such great care and I hope things improve soon
  15. I think it is reasonable for you to charge more as the place and features sound way above what most would have.
  16. I don't know really, but I would guess that around $60 - $70 for a day would be around the ball park and something that I could potentially manage on occasions . I would expect that a day care service like this to be more expensive than boarding kennels that probably have weekly rates. My figure comes basically from info that a friend was paying $25 per day at a kennel for 5 weeks that he will be on holiday, so my figures could be a bit skewed. Again, my thoughts are purely guess work as I have never needed to use doggy-care or a boarding kennel, but something like yours sounds appealing - even though a Husky might not be the breed many would like to look after for a day :D
  17. If you only do it weekly then perhaps just get a soft cloth or cut up an old tshirt and make up a cup of calendula tea, soak, wring out and use it to wipe the ears. Even if you did it daily I don't think it would be too much of a hassle. Just have a bunch of little cloths to use :) I think the properties of the calendula will be really good for the dog and it should be cheaper :D
  18. I dunno, it sounds very much like an American thing... can't get registration so start up your own organisation and then say yours in better because you are more invested in dogs health than looks. Their target market can then become a member, pay the membership fees and have some number or prefix to use to persuade buyers that your litters are in some way superior??? No offence to our American cousins, it just sounds too familiar. We have similar organisations that pop up in martial arts (of which I teach). These organisations in martial arts are ALWAYS dodgy and their membership reads like a who's who of charlatans. Having said that my impression comes from someone who is a traditionalist and my teacher has unquestionable credentials in Japan so I guess I am lucky and don't need to look at alternatives.
  19. I wonder if it is just taking longer to heal rather than being unsuccessful? In any case I hope you get some improvement or positive news from the vet soon. Wishing you all the best.
  20. Sorry to hear that you are having such difficulty with this. I personally would try to get the meds in by any possible means even though he has had a little vomit. Even if he chucks up again there is still all likelihood that some will get into his system. Best of luck with this
  21. Oh well... you could try making an incision in a chicken neck and inserting the pill. even half or quarter a neck would probably work.
  22. Whole Whiting, a couple of small fresh green lipped mussels, and a lamb tongue for tea last night  Is my dog spoilt? Probably, but I really enjoy sourcing good raw foods for him and love watching him enjoy crunching them down. Later in the evening he jumped up on my bed while I was reading and he got a nice tummy tickle before he took himself off to bed. :D To me, this is what having a dog is all about :)
  23. I noticed my dog was good at catching treats when I throw them, I also realised that they just go straight down the throat. So now when I give his flea heart worm tablets, I trick him by throwing them, and hey presto tablet in the guts :D
