  1. I thought the UKC in the States was considered to be bad and evil :D BUT I've just clicked that Fauves are registered with the UKC over there and they're OBVIOUSLY not bad and evil so how does it all work? Is it something breeds are a member of before they are recognised with AKC? Given that the first Fauves in the USA arrived from Europe and were FCI registered dogs does this mean that their progeny can go back to Europe????? Or once there are they doomed unless and until they're registered?
  2. That could be a solution but I'm still not convinced it is necessary. I just see it as more unnecessary regulation.
  3. No but that is surely a consideration for the Judge of the junior handler's comp, the owner of the dog being shown in junior handlers and the parent of the child (as it is junior handler comps where I have seen the problem). I don't think it can be restricted to breed or even size of dog because it is such an individual dog thing - some toy breeds will be more narky than some giant breeds, some terriers more narky than gundogs etc. I also don't see how restricting age of the handler helps because age and size is no indicator of experience or ability.
  4. Yeah that is the part I don't understand either. Neutering doesn't make a dog easier to handle, less likely to be aggressive or anything else that I can think of, it simply renders it unable to procreate. I actually see children in junior handlers showing dogs they are less able to control more frequently than I do in the breed judging. Most children I see who are handling in breed judging are handling their own dogs and often alongside their parents.
  5. Following Haredown Whippet's comments earlier that the more junior junior handlers should be restricted to showing neuters what are your views and why? I have a daughter who is 8 next weekend who has been handling in the breed line-up from her 7th birthday (literally as she turned 7 on the day of a show) and she loves it so I have a very different view to HW on this. A day at a dog show, showing her pup, is preferable to a birthday party, to netball, to a school camp etc. We don't have many shows which offer true junior handler competitions and we have no junior handling classes within 3-4 hours of our house. If she was unable to show at breed level she would be unable to show very often at all, far, far less than she currently can.
  6. BUT you raised it here and now. And have consistently failed to answer my questions.
  7. But what is the advantage of junior handlers under 10 showing a neutered dog? Doesn't that disadvantage the junior handlers under 10 if they don't have a neuter dog to show?
  8. But a junior handler (ie any child over the age of 7) can show any dog - my daughter shows her own pup in the breed exhibition? What have I missed that you're saying? ETA Or do you mean tiny-tots (children under 7)? If so they are only allowed to show with an adult at the end of the lead and only at shows that have tiny-tots junior handling, which, IME, has never been a sanctioned junior handler's event. OR (another or) are you saying that in Junior Handler competitions the handlers should be able to show either an entire dog or a neuter dog?
  9. I agree with you that the BIS prize should be better than Neuter in Show BUT truly don't agree on the other points. Am I biased in my views - definitely - but the dogs I cheer on at most shows in the Neuter Class ARE past champions - why aren't they entitled to multi titles? If a dog is desexed because it has made its contribution to the breed in the eyes of its owner, yet still loves to show, why should it be excluded??? As for the most of junior of Junior Handlers being limited to exhibiting neuters you would be leaving my daughter unable to show unless or until I neuter a dog already in my home. How the hell is that fair or encouraging to the most junior of Junior Handlers? I think it is important to remember that the bulk of junior junior handlers are the children of exhibitors so they may well not have a neutered dog in their home
  10. I've done temperament testing & a number of temperament testing training classes and, whilst the test (when I was trained on it) covered loads of things I truly think that the very best temperament testers also have knowledge of individual breed traits because they are very relevant. Using this breed purely as an example as it has been used earlier in this thread, I now share my home with an insanely confident and outgoing Italian Greyhound yet I can tell you right now that he would shut down in a pound - you would never believe the mental case that I live with and who my visitors get to see. There are a number of breeds who are bred to be aloof and those breeds will NEVER do well in a temperament test and if a dog is microchipped as a particular breed a good assessor should take their knowledge of that breed & its natural temperament tendencies into consideration.
  11. I've got 2 Fauve bitches here, one had 4 pups, one had 2. Both had identical food, exercise during & after pregnancy. One bitch has sprung right back up after 12 months, the other after 18 months is still saggy. I, from my enormous experience :D have decided that dogs are like humans - some go back into shape quickly, others will never be quite the same again.
  12. Wow that is awesome!!! Well done! I know a number of people who have now had the same results just from improving their OWN attitude. So important to remember!
  13. Doesn't seem fair at all.
  14. Finally today we received our Export Pedigree from NZ for our new import NZ Ch DK Uch Whistlewood's Acey Mac (Imp Swe)so he should, hopefully, be able to be shown at Temora for the very first time!! Just can't wait to get this boy into the ring.
  15. Fabulous!!! Just what I was after!
  16. I bought a crate from a friend recently and when they showed me the photo it came with a crate tray but, apparently, the crate that she was selling didn't include the crate. This is a friend and I don't want to make a fuss BUT I also want to talk to her about reducing the cost to cover the cost of the crate tray that I need to buy. Any suggestions on where to buy one from as google has not been my friend.
  17. Yes I did! When I look at this photo I can see the battle we were having though, I love it!
  18. Its not a great photo of the stack but it shows the lead issue I have - this is after I've tried to stuff it all into my hand once I've got him stacked. He was being a right royal turd at this particular moment in time
  19. I'm trying to work on getting my lead neatly packaged when I stack my dog. With Fauves it is REALLY important that you control their head at the beginning of the stack or else you lose them. If you can get control of their head early, they will stand well for quite a while but if not they battle you the whole time. So... I stack them and go head first, then move to legs etc and get to the end and realise that the lead is lying all over the ground. Will have to work on it.
  20. Thanks! It was probably our biggest win as, whilst we've won Junior in Group (and other classes in group) before, there were some real quality dogs in the line-up including a couple shown by "faces". My first thought was "shit *Joe Blow* is in the line-up" and I immediately said to myself that it didn't matter, we were good enough. Even in photos I can see my changed attitude.
  21. Well this thread has really changed my showing - a complete turn around. Today when Bazinga and I were in the ring for Junior In Show a good friend of mine who is a very accomplished exhibitor/handler asked me as I waited if I'd been having professional handling lessons. As I said to her - simply a change of attitude and its gone down the lead. Since I've changed my attitude I've had so many comments about how great me and my dogs are looking so if you haven't given it a whirl yet I highly recommend it!!!
  22. Was SUCH a great day!!!! So proud of my Zing Man taking Junior in Group against some top quality dogs AND under a hound specialist!
  23. Be VERY VERY VERY careful of your speed anywhere between Albury & Gundagai as the police around Holbrook are brutal. Stick with speed limits in roadwork zones too as they WILL nail you - I see it all the time (I live just south of Holbrook). The bakery is FABULOUS.
  24. 99% certain that Woomargama Hotel will also allow animals - they definitely allow them in trailers but I'm sure I've seen some being kept in rooms also. Woomargama is 10 minutes south of Holbrook and has recently been bypassed. The pub also has great meals and lovely friendly people
