Sometimes fences are right up next to footpaths - sometimes you have no choice when walking your dog along a footpath to be right up next to someone's fence.

Funny Things You Have Heard About Your Breed...

 It is simpler to say that rather than Basset Fauve De Bretagne, especially since I've been practising my French accent. -
Funny Things You Have Heard About Your Breed...
Trisven13 replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
When I mention that I show dogs.... "what breed do you show?".... Response "You probably won't have heard of them, Basset Fauve De Bretagne" followed by the expected (and sensible) blank look. I can respond with many standard responses which normally include "there are only 43 in Australia" and I get asked 90% of times "what breeds are in them then"... Not helped when people see them I regularly hear "oh look at the Cocker Spaniel X" Can't be too concerned when you show a rare breed though. -
Adore this photo that I just received of Ellie-Mae in a bunny hole.

Hi - I have given you my phone number so that you can contact me and we can talk more about the breed as it is often easiest to answer questions that way but this is what I can tell you about my favourite breed. * With kids - amazing. They adore kids completely and make great companions for them. They enjoy to play but they are also very gentle and will happily play alongside kids - they don't even mind a bit of dress-ups :D . Even the Fauves I've met who haven't grown up with kids still love kids. * With other animals - amazing. I have occasionally had issues with entire dogs/bitches when girls are in season but generally speaking they can happily run in a pack without issue. * With exercise - provided they are a part of your family most Fauves will take as much or as little exercise as you want to give. Some will be more energetic than others but generally they should be okay, particularly if you have the ability for them to have a big run somewhere else - yard etc. If you suddenly decide you want to go for a 2 hour walk however they will happily join you. * With training - depends on the Fauve. I have a couple of young dogs who love to work with me on training. It is definitely different to training a working breed as their motivation is different but it is quite possible. Cosmolo is correct about recall training completely as that is not so easy. I haven't prioritised it but I know a number of people who have no issue with recall with their Fauves. Beck is also correct - they are a short dog but not a small dog weighing in at around 15kg. They can be very strong if allowed to be as they have a low centre of gravity and will pull. * Negatives - they shed, probably more noticeable when you have multiple Fauves like I do. They dig following grubs in the grass and love to dig in wet soil - if you love your gardens you will need to spend some time teaching them where they can and can't dig. Some Fauves can be barkers - I only have one who is and it is easily remedied at the moment with a citronella collar, he has been a very noisy boy from the time he was 4 weeks old so I suspect it is simply a "him" thing and he is much worse when isn't allowed to just hang out with us. They are not a breed for off-lead walking unless you do a LOT of training with them. I can't think of anything else to add at the moment so will add some photos and let them do the talking :D Marie chilling out with Hugo Ellie-Mae who lives in NZ vaulting the garden on her morning run. Ellie-Mae pretending to be injured whilst playing doctors & nurses with her kids. The worst I've ever got from mine... Marie in destructo mode.

As my newest import is Swedish I'm thinking of the registered names of his first litter being Abba songs... On the weekend I was listening to "Thank You for the Music" and have figured out that I could change a few things to work in with my prefix so that I could have that as a registered name. Then I could call the pup "La La".... Stupid but amuses me.

I'm Friends With The Judge (or I Am Paying Them)...
Trisven13 replied to Dobecrazy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree with this summary. The only other thing I'd add is that where a judge is sending a dog through to a different judge for General Specials, there is additional pressure to send through something "credible". If the GS judge doesn't select any of their candidates many judges will be disappointed. So sending through a bumbling newbie with a remarkable dog that the newbie has done an excellent job of making look as terrible as possible isn't something most will do. Some will, but that's not enough to build a showing career on, so I think you have to ask yourself each time "what did they do/have that I didn't?" instead of complaining about face judging. That is actually a really good point that I'm surprised I haven't picked up on before Anita. I've heard judges be excited that a dog that they selected as a group winner or class in group winner went on to take an in show prize and it makes sense. Yet another reason to improve on my handling. -
I like dog names that make me laugh/smile. I don't really care what others think of them.

I went to Mt Gambier and titled my very first home bred champ, Trisven Bad Moon Rising "Bazinga". Was awesome! My absolute highlight for the weekend, however, was my 7 year old daughter improving her handling out of sight with her own little Fauve puppy. Fauves are stubborn little turds to show (like most scenthounds) but McKenzie & Mike are really starting to work well together and, best of all, are having a great time together doing it!

Or me with my Fauves :D

Fabulous news - see there are wonderful people in our little world! -

Is there a way to find out how many Fauves are entered today?

This. And while all breeds judges might not be able to apply the detailed knowledge a specialist can, when it comes to temperament, I think this thread shows a bit of tortuous self-justification. I show a breed that isn't effusive with strangers. Not effusive with strangers doesn't mean "can't stand and be examined in the presence of its owner/master/handler". It's interesting that Azawakhs were dragged in. I think if people knew what many of those silkily perfect Afghans are really like (note "a certain keen fierceness" in the standard) they would have renewed respect for their handlers. The thing is, those handlers, and the handlers of Dobes and some of the stroppier terriers are all over it. The dogs are examined, they behave, there is no drama. A Maremma is not a Presa. I think it is a little rude to say that I "dragged Azawakhs in". I had spent a really pleasant hour or so chatting with the owners of the Azawakhs at the Canberra Royal, admiring their dogs, discussing the fun and games of showing a breed new to Australia and the idiosyncrasies of their breed. They were the ones who told me that the breed wasn't touched by Judges overseas and that only once in Australia had they had a judge "who knew how they were to be judged". I wasn't dragging anything in, I was interested in what they had to say, it matched what I'd read about the breed and didn't take anything away from what I thought of their dogs. I raised what they said because, whilst Tralee annoys many on here (including me many times), he didn't appear to me to be saying anything different to what these people had to say.

Yep that is what happened to me this weekend Capanash! I went in for Junior in Group and saw my competition - one was a big name with a bitch who has beaten us many, many times!! Immediately I said "God, I've lost already" until a friend reminded me of my positive thinking. My big competition are actually good friends and I went up to them said "Forget it, this one is mine!" to try to boost my confidence... Walked away with it!! :D

I will never forget you telling me years ago that I had to be able to stack my dog within 3 seconds and I have made sure ever since that I can. I thought at the time it was impossible  but as I practised and trained my dogs I learnt it was possible. It can be a tough one to master, as the dogs often chuck a curve ball at you and it can bring your best plans unstuck Yep - got a curve ball today for "In Group" . Ran around and reached the end of the line and got ready to set him up - HUGE pile of rabbit poo right at the nose end of a scent hound... . Moved him back away from it and realised that back was bad so moved him forward... Slight panic but got there in the end!

Practised this over the weekend and came away with Best of Breed & Junior In Group both days Have to be honest - I really felt fabulous in the ring and it definitely carried down the lead. Thanks Haredown Whippet for the great timing on this thread :D

These are the people to contact [email protected] or [email protected]. Marion is already running classes in Sydney as I understand it. Jenn will be here in July/August to do information nights and then permanently back here in November. She will be a fully qualified Nose Works Instructor by the end of June - she is currently an Associate Nose Works Instructor.

Boofer From B Hill (imp 24 )
Trisven13 replied to ninahartland's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Thanks for your response - I missed it whilst typing mine. I've had one bitch who wasn't overly interested in caring for her pups from very early on as she had breed to within an inch of her life BUT she still was in the same foster home with them and spent time with them disciplining them - it is those things that are vital more so than the caring for them side of things.
