  1. GREYHOUND racing authorities in NSW and Victoria have introduced new animal welfare regulations after criticism that thousands of dogs are put down each year due to over breeding.

The new welfare standards include tighter controls on breeding and compliance.

The changes mean the number of greyhounds a trainer is allowed to train will also be limited according to their licence type.

Dogs will be required to stay under the care of a registered owner for their lifetime, unless retired as a pet.

Greyhound Racing NSW chairwoman Eve McGregor said the new regulations will result in greater education among breeders, trainers and rearers.

"The animal welfare strategy ... will ultimately deliver world-class levels of care for all racing greyhounds," she said.

In its submission to a NSW parliamentary inquiry into the greyhound racing industry on Thursday, the RSPCA said over breeding had led to thousands of dogs being euthanased when they fail as racers.

"There's clear evidence of mass over breeding of greyhounds in NSW resulting in a vast population of surplus unwanted dogs," said RSPCA Australia Scientific Officer Jade Norris.

  2. Hi guys

I have been contacted by someone looking to surrender a "8mth old female natural bob tail rotty" Pup is too bouncy for the toddlers in the household.

Dog is currently in the central coast and undesexed so I wouldnt like her snapped up by a byb. Note she has a "lobster claw" deformity to her front foot which will require fixing when she is desexed.

catching up on my updates now...

  4. I am hopeful that it is a good step in the right direction. One thing I dont like is that animals released under this agreement all come with full vet work, although it is at a "nominal fee" these animals have been through the assessment process. What about the elderly, sick, unsocialised or with breed specific traits that wont pass? These are the ones most in need.

  5. I have just seen this about RSPCA NSW commencing formal rescue partnerships, I have emailed for information but in the meantime has anyone seen this in action yet? Fingers crossed it will be the start of alot of lives saved.

As of the October, RSPCA NSW is beginning a process to formalise partnerships with animal rescue groups around the state. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) has been made available to all rescue groups who are interested in partnering with RSPCA NSW to assist with the rehoming of companion animals.

“For many years we have worked with over 30 animal rescue and welfare groups around the state,” said Steve Coleman, RSPCA NSW CEO. “This process seeks to formalise those partnerships and help facilitate a uniform transfer process of animals from RSPCA’s care to the care of these groups. We also hope to form new partnerships and expand our network, increasing the number of animals that can be rehomed in NSW” Coleman added.

Rescue groups signing the MOU will have access to RSPCA NSW animals for a nominal fee and ownership of those animals will be transferred to the rescue group who are then at liberty to use their own networks and resources to find the most appropriate home for the animal.

All animals transferred to rescue group ownership will leave the RSPCA desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and with a full veterinary health check.

In the last financial year RSPCA NSW cared for 30,080 animals that came through its doors. Of these, 10,799 animals were rehomed and 1,246 were reunited with their owners. RSPCA NSW hopes to increase these figures with the formalisation of these partnerships with rescue groups.

Interested animal rescue groups who would like to receive and review a copy of the MOU are encouraged to contact Executive Manager of Animal Care Services, Brendon Neilly on 02 9770 7555 or email: [email protected]

  6. MORE than 100 dogs kept in small wire cages have been seized from a Victorian puppy farm in what the RSPCA says is one of the worst cases of animal cruelty in history.

The dogs were surrendered to the RSPCA after inspectors found them in cramped wire cages surrounded by their own excrement.

The animal welfare organisation was notified about the intensive breeding centre after receiving a complaint and conducted the raid with a team of RSPCA inspectors, police, a veterinarian and council staff.

The RSPCA's Helen Cocks said the organisation was shocked at the number of dogs and the deplorable conditions in which they were kept at the farm.

"A large proportion of these dogs, of various breeds and ages, were kept in wire cages over their own excrement, which was several centimetres deep," Ms Cocks said.

"Wire cages are inhumane and totally unacceptable because they inhibit normal movement and pose a significant risk of leg and paw injuries for dogs and especially puppies."

Ms Cocks said many of the dogs were unable to be inspected thoroughly because they were too traumatised and afraid of people.

The owners of the puppy farm, the location of which the RSPCA has not disclosed, have been issued with several notices to comply and could face prosecution for animal cruelty.

  7. Somersby RSPCA have Thor now available for adoption. It would be great to see him go to a fabulous boxer savvy home.

    Thor 3yo male Boxer

Thor is your typical Boxer, very sporty , willing to please happy go lucky boy. He will require active person/persons for his new owner. He also requires 6' colorbond fences to keep him safe.He is housetrained and enjoys being outside during the day and inside with you at night. He knows basic commands , sit, stay, lay down, inside, outside. He seems fine with the company of other dogs. We would not recommend any cats , rabbits, or birds as he would like to chase them.
