  1. Old fashioned butcher shops will usually do bulk orders for customers. When I lived in major cities, I used to go direct to the chicken processors (Baiada, Inghams etc) and buy in bulk. Bags of chicken necks and boxes of carcasses would last me for a few months.
  2. My first experience of spey incontinence was with my greyhound. It was a little messy when it first started as it coincided with a UTI. But no real dramas once the medication kicked in. My second experience was with my Stafford cross and again, she had a few UTIs (confirmed with urine dip tests) before incontinence was proven. I guess I'm just not sure why people might want to keep a pet entire - it's not as if de-sexing is expensive compared to the expense of some of the consequences of keeping them entire. It would be different if we were talking a potential National Champion I'm sure but for a pet...I struggle to understand why some people prefer not to de-sex.
  3. What an awesome gift idea for the person who has everything...
  4. I agree with CavNRott...an unstable knee doesn't magically repair itself...something is definitely going on. You just need to find out what.
  5. I've had no issues in treating spey incontinence in more than one of my pets. The medication for it is relatively cheap and works beautifully. It's hormone replacement...give me a speyed bitch with a small risk of incontinence over an entire one at risk of pregnancy and cancer (among other issues) any day. As for the "vet advice" - what twaddle! The vet *may* have said let the bitch have a season, but not a litter, unless the vet is touting for additional business with no qualms about potential harm to a patient...but people do "mis-hear" advice on a regular basis.
  6. Horses slaughtered in Australia for human consumption must be sent overseas. The consumption of horse meat by humans is illegal here. That's not to say it doesn't happen as I know it does (I've seen "home slaughter" buyers at public horse auctions)...but it's not supposed to happen. I bought a pony at a sale bidding against a person known to be a home slaughterman who butchers horses to give to family and friends. It's horrific...and even though it's illegal, it goes on.
  7. There's no council in the ACT - it's one level of government only. The law stipulates that all dogs over six months MUST BE de-sexed unless the owner obtains a breeder's permit (there are stringent requirements for both obtaining and keeping a breeder's permit for good reason). Nobody is suggesting "failing to de-sex equates to neglect" per se. The issue with the animals being entire is two-fold: they are aged over six months, and they are kept within the ACT without a breeder's permit. Therefore that is a clear breach of legislation. The manner in which the animals are housed and the lack of vet care and nutrition is a separate issue. I am stunned that some people seem to be condoning the fact that these animals are not de-sexed...the law applies to all dog owners in the ACT equally. Mandatory de-sexing has been in force in the ACT since 2000. There is no excuse to be in contravention of the law is there?
  8. I rescue the occasional horse destined for slaughter...not allowed to be for human consumption, they're pet food only.
  9. ...and here I was, thinking I was somehow cursed with a de-sexed male foxie mix that pees on my girls...haven't seen him pee on himself so far!
  10. Okay, thanks for clearing that up. Most of the "bull arabs" I see advertised are pigging dogs...I live in the country where pigging is very common and pigging dogs are bought/sold frequently. The "Paulson Bull Arab" is a breed too, according to the people who buy/sell and breed them. None of these people mention anything about having a breed registry or pedigree for their animals. This breed seems to be interchangeable with the "Johnson Bull Dog" in some pigging circles and of course, they also use a lot of "Wolfhounds" in their "lines"...which is probably why there's so much confusion as to what is legitimate breeding to a standard vs the average BYB selling pups for money on the side.
  11. There is a bullarab registry that's working on getting the breed officially recognised. I believe there is also one for Bosdogs and American Bulldogs. There needs to be a recorded history, pedigree and standard for developing breeds or breeds not yet recognised by the ANKC in my understanding. I'm still confused. Are these organisations held in similar esteem to the ANKC affiliated clubs and the working breed clubs? What about the AAPDB - the body that welcomes pet shop owners as members too? Does this mean that the ANKC isn't the benchmark for registered breeders/exhibitors any more? How many of these organisations organise/host dog shows for conformation? Do they have similar championship/point score requirements? Some do organise conformation shows but that doesnt make them better than another that doesn't - it just makes them different . You seriously cant expect that the whole world should only allow people who are registered with the ANKC to be able to advertise their puppies? And this petitions would stop all of us - are we to simply give up our rights and what we want to do because someone might advertise there who is dodgy? I still can't see where the distinction is between registered breeders and BYBs if that's what you're saying...is there a way to explain it so I can understand what is meant then by BYB?
  12. So if the Mini Foxie is held in such esteem, why can't it be registered with the ANKC? Can breeders advertise their litters on DOL? Is it okay for someone to breed their mini foxies to say Chihuahuas and have the pups recognised too? Would such a breeder be considered legitimate or a BYB? Same question applies to anyone breeding two different purebreds to get a crossbred litter really... Sorry for all the questions but I'm still not sure of how some "unregistered" breeders are somehow okay and others are not...so if it means any breeder that has "purebred" litters only, that's never been my understanding and I'm happy to be corrected.

  14. Rebanne - if it were just a few dodgy breeders selling just a few poorly-bred animals I wouldn't have so much opposition to this sort of advertising. But it's not. The majority of ads I see for animals on sites like Gumtree are from BYBs and they're breeding for money. What other reason is there to breed crosses such as "Cavoodles" or so-called purebreds like "American Bulldogs" for example? Can they be exhibited? Are they working dogs? This just "legitimises" in the minds of many, the backyard breeding trade...making it more than acceptable as a way of making a living...just like pups in pet shop windows...just like pups in baskets at markets...I find it disgusting.
  15. So there are legitimate Registers other than the Kennel Clubs and working breed clubs? Which ones would they be? The AAPDB? The Australian Bull Arab Club? I didn't think they were legitimate? They might "look" legitimate to the average puppy buyer...but are they? ETA - what about the "American Bulldog" -is that also a legitimate recognised breed in Australia now? Irondog claims to be the "original" registry...
  16. So it seems like some of the comments suggest that at least some DOLers don't mind BYBs and don't mind them having a fairly decent level of exposure in the market place? I didn't realise that would be the case in a community such as this one.
  17. Danois - nobody actually enforces these 'rules' on GT. That's my issue with it. If a breeder advertises as "registered" then it follows that the ad needs to provide evidence of said registration. So many breeders claiming to be "registered" are not actually KC registered at all. Some have membership of dodgy "wannabe" registration bodies. Others are just lying. There's nothing to stop them. The better alternative would be for sites such as Gumtree to insist on ONLY Registered breeders (for all types of species, not just dogs) to advertise their animals...and that evidence of registration be provided and all ads moderated for approval.
  18. Yes - which is why some ANKC registered breeders are desexing their Limited Register pups before they leave (especially if they have a breed likely to be farmed or BYB or cross-bred. Which presents problems for purchasers wanting dogs for performance events as well as pets and/or concerned about the possible impact of early desexing. And yet the only guarantee that a pedigree dog isn't going to be used for unscrupulous breeding is de-sexing prior to sale. I'd love to see more Registered breeders doing just that. How else do we stop BYBs and puppy mills?
  19. Maybe Gumtree could set out some requirements ? It does. Sadly the rules it has are not actually applied to stop dodgy ads...including idiots studding out their "rare blue stiffies (no papers)" I kid you not. I report as many dodgy ads as I can but the people just re-jig the ad to "comply" with the rules. I've even seen a lot of BYBs claiming to be "Registered" breeders - there's no requirement for the ad to include the breeder's credentials if they select "registered" breeder. Why not? I know a lot of rescue people call it Scumtree. It's a great market place for the BYB.
  20. I had the misfortune of meeting Dr Smith a number of years ago - good riddance to bad rubbish I say!
  21. I've used Samford Pet Resort & recommend it. My dogs had an indoor "suite" & were relatively happy (they don't enjoy kennels).
