  1. I think the Salukis could be a comparative example as a landrace that has been standardised in western countries. Granted western ideals of what counts as pure have creeped in a bit but things change, in the home country they are much more varied than what we get still. And if it hasn’t changed, you can import some landrace Salukis into the breed standard pool (admittedly a looser standard than most breeds) - giving a genetic boost and keeping them a bit closer to their true origins. I don’t think that happens as commonly as would be desirable but it’s an option most breeds don’t get. But it again the goals for the landrace variant are generally very different to the goals when imported and you result in the different varieties of landrace and “purebred”. Both Salukis.
  2. Why not leave them as flexible land races? A standard is not a mandatory part of breeding a dog - I would hazard that a standard is more a symptom of higher class stamping their mark over a type of dogs. Land race breeds are generally varied across a base type. Breed standards are not known for that level of flexibility. Etc etc i realise the irony in writing that on a pure bred dog forum :p regarding class divisions on the types of dogs owner, there’s the book “Our Dogs, Our selves” which analyses classical literature and it too wonders about the breed/type divisions that happen between higher class with breed standards and “lower class”. I’ll try to share the page I found really interesting on it when I get home. I think quite a few breeds do come from more basic backgrounds originally but as they get standardised and become more acceptable to higher classes, their humble backgrounds get forgotten. Eg whippets, terriers, Also thinking that as we see it today the urban poor are relatively new concept, only 200+ years old and...well... standards aren’t known for accepting developing /new breeds, especially when they’re not likely to be called such. Let alone from more humble origins ? How would they be identified? Would we want them identified? How do you avoid putting such a higher class associated activity on to these dogs without it coming across as class erasure or cultural erasure it white washing etc? Something to be very careful of I think. What about home grown camp/desert dogs? I think a comparison could be made between some ppls gut reaction of them being worthless pests (for being lower income rural linked dogs?) and that baladi are similarity disregarded hence this video raising awareness on their virtues so we get a nice romanticised view of them without the cultural leanings for or against. Request for a similar video on the desert dogs??
  3. that was really interesting thank you! they remind me of greyhounds, with all the colour and ear variations.
  4. If you’re in VIC there are other applicable organisations but I can’t remember all the names - I had to call up a few weeks ago to get them to list them because they were not defined. Lady was super rude too. The dogs did run down to just dogs vic and greyhound vic. However that was for a rego discount. Previous year I had him registered as an intact general dog. Do do you mind if I ask what council? See if we can’t scout your paperwork requirements for options. Most councils do allow intact unrecognised breeds and cross breeds but they cost a bit more.
  5. Best of luck Cuko. There were some good ideas shared for you to try implementing before people went all conspiracy theorist. Try not to let their suspicion and hyperbole prevent you from trying the useful posts If after time you still do not have success with the re-training and the management suggestions from earlier, it might be worth bringing in a trainer to spot any extra causes for behaviour that you are unaware of. A health check never goes astray as well Definitely get him neutered as neighbours dog would not cope well with that. He’s done growing so thinking with his bits is just going to get him into trouble. Consider seeing if you can’t buy one of those gate latches that swing the gate shut behind you, reduce the risk of him going wandering out without you and gives you more time to enjoy his company. I’m super partial to tug and fetch to get the jitters out if he’s seeming unusually energetic on a day. Might be be worth seeing if neighbour wants to desex their dog too, or you might find other dogs come calling and they pose a risk to you too. Good luck.
  6. For recall, what kind of whistle have you had luck with? i have bought both a silent whistle and a ?dog whistle? and I think I am as bad with these as I am with actual whistling. By actual whistling I mean it’s befn my new year goal for two years now and I still can’t get that piercing sound that will reach my dogs on the other side of the footie oval. Therefore i I must substitute. Please help. wait no disregard turns out i was setting it up wrong, thank you youtube people. let me give this another shot with the silent acme one.
  7. I have If you feel it’s a bit of a brick wall or lost cause or a troll - that is fine. We all have that and some time or another. But saying it in the threads detracts from helpful comments, discourages drive by readers and is all around not helpful to the situation. Even if it is fake or the OP is reluctant to change, it doesn’t hurt for people to keep trying. So im hoping by writing my thoughts people will think first before writing a comment that at its heart isn’t helping op or passerby’s. I’m not suggesting use kiddy gloves, but give people a chance. And if you have given enough chances yourself or have run out of ideas or just not feeling up to it, leave it to those who still do have the energy and ideas and the like. Evey time OP does something a little different, that’s an improvement. Even just thinking about things. Hoping my thoughts made sense, don’t want to side track the post anymore myself
  8. So? This poster has come to a forum for help. That’s step 1 to becoming a better owner. Asking for help. Step 1 for this forum would be to provide help. Some people have done that. Asked questions, provided resources. However. Dismissing them, making jokes about them/the dog to make others laugh, being “””brutally honest””” - doesn’t help them or the dog or anyone and it obscures/detracts from those truly helpful comments that might actually help them improve and fix the situation. And what if someone else in a similar situation reads this thread in hope of help? They’re going to get precious little of it and might not even sign up to ask for help for fear of similar judgements or dismissal. They came here for help. They’re asking for help. If you can’t help, or you are too upset by the scenario/situation to offer help or advice - leave it to those who are already offering it or can offer it. Go vent in the off topic forums set up specifically for that or make an angry Facebook post or chat about it with a friend. But don’t chase them off their own post asking for help. That hurts them and the dog.
  9. Yes the situation is shitty and dangerous. That has been addressed several times by poochmad and others. The OP has yet to return and add more information let alone time to absorb the feedback and think about things. Others jumping in to turn it into troll accusations (what if it’s NOT?!) or to go straight to “you’re a shitty owner” accusations - how does that help anyone except to make yourself feel good? Does the written dog pile actually help this person and their dog to improve their ownership capabilities? Or could it more likely upset them so they don’t listen or drive them off the forum all together? We talk a lot about trying to redirect dogs, give them alternatives, don’t overcorrect them, be understanding even when it’s hard. Damn shame we don’t give the owners the same chance and ways to improve. Especially with high risk cases like this situation. Generally when something is risky you should be careful and mindful, not bring out the hammer and beat away until something explodes.
  10. This is tangently related to the topic of wild dogs and how genes change. Someone had their suspected coydog (an actual genuine coydog) DNA tested. https://my.embarkvet.com/dog/frenzi i wonder how the coydog population compares to dingo hybrids. Do they then merge in with the wild population and become (visually) indistinguishable from “true” dingo/coyote after awhile? A bit of a boost to transitioning visually at least compared to the red feral pack that don’t have the “help” of true feral relatives to share genes with (but have started keeping self separate from roaming domestics)? some pictures of the mix: http://pupcontent.tumblr.com/post/172662997682/frenzis-embark-dog-dna-results
  11. Some people value old dogs and will pay that fee for them. So be it. Some will pay even more for a small little healthy ambiguous fluffy. So what, if they value it at that? Can use the “extra” from that for the old blind dog. If soneone don’t value a certain dog at a certain price, instead of complaining about it... they should go find one that does meet what they are willing to pay instead of fussing over rescues not pricing dogs on their personal “quality” rating.
  12. I think people making comments like that are basically saying they don’t think the dog is “worth” that much. Personally I think getting a health checked desexed fed assessed dog for that price is a bargain!!! Thank you!!!
  13. Although if we get technical... I waited 10 years to get thistle? ;) (to save to buy a house so can buy a dog) that was definitely impatient waiting! thyme was nervous waiting. Third... going with the flow no rush waiting???
  14. I was waiting 6 months for my second dog but when that breed didn’t work out they helped me find Thyme (cousin breed). I haven’t fully decided if I want a third and certainly not ready right now so I don’t think I count as waiting? There SHOULD be a litter I will be VERY interested in next year and I will evaluate our situation closer to that date, see if they’re still what I would like, if I’d like to see how that litter grow and get second litter or if would like to “wait” longer or if they don’t fit and I am ready a different dog or breed or source. Does this count as waiting years?
  15. There are jackets you can have them wear to the beach to have them more visible and protect them from the sun (UV rating 50), for frequent beach visitors: Dog Rashies
  16. I own a show line springer...he is super fun Medium energy fun. good for hikes, only bounces off walls sometimes:
  17. In Melbourne you can buy whole skinned rabbit here: https://rawandnaturalpetsupplies.com.au/ Not sure about goat
  18. Playing it safe being one of the things these dogs would all have in common is food (and kennel area, and police vehicles, exercise areas etc). Not much else to the recall than that I expect. Kudos to them
  19. Book a one on one with Chris for an assessment and work plan http://www.positivek9training.com.au/contact/ http://www.positivek9training.com.au/testimonials/ ive been going there almost three years and have seen lots of troubled dogs come in and improve (mine is one of them) classes are not mandatory, one on one support is also present.
  20. You are not far from me! I used positive k9 training in Kew. You have both the options of one on ones and classes (or both!). Its been nearly three years since I started with them and couldn’t be happier. I go now for the fun and to keep both dogs skills up but at the start with one big reactive scared dog they were the most priceless. I would contact chris with them for a one on one and an assessment for what you can do around your house he is also great at answering questions you might have about methods and approaches.
  21. Here is a short challenge coming up to build your dogs engagement through the power of play - specifically tug http://www.collared-scholar.com/event/7-days-play-free-challenge/ it will help help add an extra level of enthusiasm to the relationship between you and your dogs. They will voluntarily look to you more because why fixate on a dog when having fun with owner?
  22. It is rather quiet tonight (granted, I got home VERY late). So quiet...I think...these deserve a shark cartalidge each with their dinner ;)
  23. Don’t forget, she is only two years old. That is young for a GSD, she is only just beginning to mature so she will forget herself and make mistakes. That’s why you step in and redirect her before she makes the mistakes so that you can build habit and patterns of choosing to look to you, of her making the choice and the you rewarding that choice - be it treats, space from the upsetting dog, a game, praise. Does require you to get very good at recognising smaller and smaller signs of her making decisions. When she slips, as above, that is information a situation was beyond her capability to think through right now. It happens, you both make mistakes. Think and plan how could have avoided the fixation or explosion and try again another day.
  24. Well done for working diligently on her! How long have you had her for? Photos? She must have lots of fur to brush? being she is maturing out it should hopefully get easier to manage her and avoid any explosions at all as time progresses. And even without distractions is good you are able to find a quiet location to practice your recall and exercise her. One of the most important skills I think, right next to walking politely on a lead. When I want to work specifically on dog distractions for recalls and focus and the like, I like to find a fenced dog park and start our drills at a distance then work our way in. Only 15-20 mins or so, so she doesn’t work herself up and maintains her calm frame of mind. We can get right up to the fence these days. Noting I don’t let her greet the dogs even through the fence. Strange dogs are unpredictable. Better she remember to ignore them.
  25. Haha I did eye my duct tape wondering if could use that. So so far so good. Only a single bang that I recall (followed by an offended bark). Hoping this breaks that habit once and for all. Which, realising he doesn’t realise this, means I’ll be able to go to them more frequently if I’m not waiting for them to calm down!
