Pembroke Welsh Corgi Breeders - Rude Breeders
Two Best Dogs! replied to JNinness's topic in General Dog Discussion
I hated puppy hunting, even with the nice breeders I like, it was very stressful and I was completely turned off shows, from the first visit I could hear people in nearby stands gossiping about other show people - and not in a like, politely suggesting against a dodgy breeder chat - it was just show gossip. But...I could hear it, out in the open. I had my best luck, out of all things, with just calling up and saying i was interested in a puppy from them and if they had time to talk or when we might be able to talk/meet. They key, consistently across all, was to ask about the dogs and let them ramble on and on in stories ;) i don't mind listening to dog stories so that bit was fun. Also meeting the dogs, with my dog. Much more organic and could address any concerns quickly. Have you joined the Corgi Down Undet facebook group? Not the page, the community group? I see people in the ESS one asking for help getting a puppy there and they seem to meet with a lot of success faster than I did with the "meet everyone with opening email/show/multiple methods in lead up to the litter that might not even have enough puppies" method. -

Pet Insurance - latest opinions please?
Two Best Dogs! replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sorry just noticed my spelling mistake. Currently I self insure with emergency savings packed away. I add a bit every month. Out of habit as can’t insure my rabbits so that savings expanded to include the dogs + rabbits. I am wondering with pet insurance what the process is to claim or know your limits? Being in an emergency filling out paperwork would be hard so how to know then and there if to make a choice and know insurance would back you up? Or better to put that insurance money away into my emergency fund. I have have been thinking about it too now that have two dogs. -
Pet Insurance - latest opinions please?
Two Best Dogs! replied to westiemum's topic in General Dog Discussion
How does the pet insurance process work? I’ve always self insured with pets and only ever had to claim on house insurance. How does it work on emergency vs annual check ups? -
I use plyers to cut them right at the base of the ....the pointy bit. The tip? Not sure what it’s calked. Won’t work for chunky foods but the wet chicken and rice purée styles work a cinch Just an alternative use suggestion ;) also so good for ill rabbits needing critical care hand fed

The perfect attitude! It takes time and he is still just a young dog mentally. Training + practice + maturity and you can get there!
-
Just make sure to tuck all the bits into the corners so nice and flat and even, but I've had no issues with mine sliding around once it had been fitted for no loose spots. 8 months and going strong.

Also work as wet dog food treat dispensers I’ve got 4 just for that!

Stop scratching door?
Two Best Dogs! replied to Two Best Dogs!'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
@PANDI-GIRL it is about 97% quiet! The other 3% is when i first get home but before I go to the dogs - i might hear a single bang and then silence. I think sometimes he just forgets its not a comfortable option anymore. I know there's been one bang tonight, I remember thinking about it on the loo, but nothing since. Can't even recall when he might have last done it before then. Much reduced! He hasn't substituted with barking or anything. Mostly he just lays on the back step or cuddles up with thistle in her kennel (why even bother with two kennels, really...) Hmmmm so quiet as I type. I think....turkey necks tonight... -
Get in a trainer+behaviourist to see your living situation with the dogs. They can advise you on what kind of training program you will need, how "bad" they think it is, what kind of changes to management you would need to do. Definitely feed them separately. Not even in sight of each other. If the excitement of the food is a trigger causing over arousal - that will creep over to the others and that's when you're most likely to have a fight. While setting up the new routine - be they separated/management or keeping them together - you should endeavour to avoid them working themselves into a tizzy. Some rescues in your area might even be able to advise you of a trainer/behaviourist and other management tips before moving into the "i need to rehome someone" stage. Only you can decide when you have reached that stage, where you can not manage all three and what might need to change. Also have each of them checked by a vet (separately) if you can, make sure there's nothing medical going on thats upsetting one and by extension, the others.

Adoption fee "too expensive"
Two Best Dogs! replied to RuralPug's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Higher demand healthy dog being sold at a higher cost = more money available to help multiple lower demand unhealthy dogs be brought up to health and adopted out. I might not like that some pure breeds get sold at prices upwards of $4k but I understand that it’s a combination of high demand and covering the associated costs of any health testing or difficulties. They are planning their dogs health and need the money for it. Why not rescues recoup too? Imagine if one of the high demand healthy rescue dogs sold for $1k? Could help so many other dogs with that! Ones who need a bit of extra help. More reliable than hoping for extra donations. If someone don’t personally value the dogs at about that much it’s pretty easy to not buy them unless you are after one of the higher demands in which case... might have to compromise with one self. If not buying the dog and just frowning at the price maybe look inward and think am I frowning because I don’t value the dog that much? I might not value that dog but where is the extra money likely to go? Do I have any objections to where it goes or am I just wincing at the price tag? Do other people value the dog that much and thus are buying it? -
Mine is also from eBay but it came with attachment points in the base to stop it rolling around. Link I like the non slip mat idea above

Poor puppies so young to be away
-
I had thought puppies being sold so young wasn’t allowed and that the godawful pet shop selling was meant to have stopped? Is it still in transition? >:( I dont care what price they are sold at or breed/mix, I care about their critical socialisation periods and parental/health care. I would think it’d be joint since both breeder and pet shop were not abiding by the law? On the age aspect if not the puppy store law changes that may or may not have started yet. Although googling it seems that law IS in effect now but it is not being regulated? How is it being enforced?

Stop mansplaining my dog to me: decoding my pup's DNA
Two Best Dogs! replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
Very entertaining read, I support doing harmless things to spite random strangers and grow your own knowledge about your dog! This quote stuck with me: That was something I was super concerned about too. Unlike this person, we didn't test clear but it is good to know in advance, once the dismay passed, that she carries DM and sometimes carrier dogs get affected by it....and the low ALT result / baseline was beneficial to hand over to my vets as we try to puzzle out some weird incontinence issues. So...I'm prepared at least, if worse comes to worse. I want to get it done with Thyme as well, whenever a decent sale happens. Make sure no health curve balls in the future.- 1 reply

Update on "Midge", the feral runt pup that was caught. She is developing upright ears! I think this makes her the first of the feral pack they've seen to have uprights: she is described as taming up wonderfully and fond of cuddles in comparison, one feral pup and an adult feral ("Little"): that one white feral: the tricolour wasn't in their recent photos, wonder where it is at? I believe someone was coming in to catch some of them, maybe they caught it:

Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
Two Best Dogs! replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have a topical post for once! The dog park near us has this amazing mini obstacle course that looks so much fun! However, very crowded dog park - I am pretty sure I could go at 2am and still find someone in it. So, solution? Can't take dog to the park, I'll bring the park to home! (and really, my yard is bigger than this "dog park", even with half of it fenced off because of landscaping) Panorama shot but we have: the pole cavalettis from scent works (you hide scent in them) the yellow cavalettis from the small child exercise kit you buy at target or kmart or something the fold up toddler slide from bunnings but with some rubberpour for grip partially made - a beam to walk along this is the clear favourite by the dogs, some kind of tunnel tent thing I bought from bunnings discount box: can't see it in the pic, but a ladder positioned to crawl under, then a hoop to jump through and another slide but this time for going down I need more aldi yoga balls, as my dogs are too big to stand on one easily (although they have done so!) also some tyres for walking over or jumping over - they're positioned so nightly fetch requires them to jump over the tyres back to the clear winner tent: they really like the tent! I pack it away when I'm not there as I think they'd likely destroy it. I also have two home alone toys for each dog to jump at/bark at: (but I have the toys removed when I'm not present because they don't like sharing and they both prefer the nectarine tree one of the shed one so to prevent conflict, toy bit removed) the flirt pole is always fun - mine is just a bunnings tomato trainer with a puppy toy on the end and the yoga ball and fetch, cant go wrong with those ( i need more of these, come on aldi!!! the aldi ones are super tough, this ones been outside for like a year and going strong) PS. home grown eco friendly snuffle mat ;) (aka there's a 3m x 2m square of yard i dont mow for dogs and bunnies. i might put a little fence around it to make it look neater, idk) -
help with my dogs not getting along anymore
Two Best Dogs! replied to Chasejax's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
yes my girl gets super cranky with my other dog when she is sore, and i have to remind myself she's not necessarily being mean - but she's sore and out of sorts and has less patience, so i need to run interference and distract my young bouncy one while she heals. and when he gets desexed this year, will do the same for him. the behaviourist should be able to help you train them to eat out of different bowls. personally, i feed mine their dinner and breakfast in their crates so nobody does any attempted dinner-theft ;) the vet should be able to advise how long to keep them apart - especially since both will be healing so both feeling a bit tender. it is so hard to be patient when you are hurting! -

Two Best Dogs! replied to Chasejax's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I think desexing will help take the edge off offended feelings. While desexing - general Vet check. You say jaxon has an injured leg? And last time he had an injured foot? He might well still be feeling tender and doesn’t have the patience for chase antics or even cuddles. While they’re recovering from desexing - have them separated to heal and get a behaviourist in to have a look around and propose some redmedial training to remind the dogs how to behave together. Are they sharing beds because they want to or not enough beds? Beds side by side can let them be near each other without the fed up one feeling crowded. -

Darwin's dog identification survey!
Two Best Dogs! replied to Two Best Dogs!'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes it was a small set of breed options? I figure they’re going very American esque because of location. Kinda like how one of the practice runs was a bloodhound x but because I’ve never met one I thought “beagle”. -
Breed suggestions for my sister please
Two Best Dogs! replied to minxy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Could still go a cavalier or cocker spaniel I think. If breeders are worried about puppy being used to people home, you could try for an older puppy or adult? Via a breeder who will help you plan teaching the dog about alone time. working is a fact of life. when I was first dog hunting there were rescues and breeders alike who didn’t like that I worked full time and was declined for just that. Second time around I had a different bigger hoop to jump but at least they discussed how to manage it with me. Very important to to find someone who will discuss any potential challenges with you and how they can be overcome. If they won’t even entertain that initial discussion with you - there are other breeders. Cavs are pretty common but careful to find a healthy line. Theyre lovely though, I really like cavs such endearing sweethearts -
Right spot? Not sure Here's a survey that is also contributing to research on dogs! It's only going for a few more weeks. It's a "can you identify the breeds in a mix" type survey. I'll just post the details below: About The Project Darwin’s Dogs, a project of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, and U-Mass Medical School, has been conducting ancestry research on thousands of dogs, analyzing DNA saliva samples to tell us the genetic history of our canine companions. In conjunction with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), the team is launching a “citizen science” survey. The data collected will tell us a lot about how people perceive breeds and mixes, how different breed mixes affect the appearance of a dog, how well people can guess their canine friends’ ancestries from looks alone, and how that might affect our lives with dogs. This information is vital to many future projects throughout the scientific world. How To Participate The survey will introduce you to 31 mutts. You’ll be asked to guess the 3 breeds contributing the largest percentage of DNA for each dog. Only the answers to the “practice survey” will be given at this time. This is real science, and we need to be sure everyone’s giving their best guesses without influence or hints from others. At the end of the research period of 60 days, each participant will be sent a certificate of participation and the answers to what makes up each of these wonderful mutts. Begin Survey Now > Thank you for your contributions to the citizen science that makes Darwin’s Dogs one of the most important research initiatives today! Here's some pics from the practice survey! contributing to research! the more people who give it the best shot, the more data points they can analyse on how bad we all are at identifying dogs XD

Maybe we're breeding from the wrong land races
Two Best Dogs! replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
I’m thinking it is likely as being developing breeds /types or mixes of, they wouldn’t be welcomed by many in purebred world for a long long time. Far more likely will be dismissed with terms like mongrels no matter how true they breed whether human guided or self defined a la street dogs. Think that’s a damn shame, I’d love to see new breeds developed. The landrace urban dogs probably do exist but are we recognising them as such? Or are we dismissing as generic mixed breed. My first thought is to the ambiguous fluffies that seem the same no matter the city and again the bull arab style crosses. You recognise them as the generic big dog, but they don’t have one defining name. Where would they fall into this wondering ? Staghound and the like, where on the scale between mixed breed and landrace would we put them? Are they dismissed because they’re usually in a lower income bracket? Do they need videos highlighting them as well? (I wouldn’t mind, would be good to watch) -
Here’s a bit of recent research, but it basically highlights what sandgrubber says. There’s no one size fits all. It depends on breed, age, size, gender etc. for one dog it might be linked with an increase and for another a decrease in certain illnesses. It it might be a good read through to see if the klee kai or close cousin breeds were included so you know how the surgery or lack thereof might predispose to certain things: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/317284794_Correlation_of_neuter_status_and_expression_of_heritable_disorders cant hell you on a Vet. Mine doesn’t seem to care about my dogs intact status but that doesn’t mean they’d write a letter. you’re in a super tricky situation.
