I am sorry Cavandra but this is simply NOT true. Yes there are a lot of customs requirements that need to be met to import pet foods and all importers hold current import permits that clearly set out these requirements, the permits along with all relevent documentation and health certificates have to be presented with each and every shipment. There is an awful lot of speculation going on here as to what foods are and are not irradiated when being imported into Australia. I suggest that to be absolutely sure, you contact the relevent pet food importer and ask the question.

There is also a product called MalAcetic Otic made by DermaPet that contains 2% Acetic Acid and 2% Boric Acid which dries ears out pretty well.

$143!!! the RRP for that food is only $124.40 so I'd be looking around a bit more. There are other outlets selling it that dont sell puppies.

You are definately not alone:) If you do a search of my posts you will read about my girl's allergies and the success we have had with de- sensitizing injections etc. I recently tried introducing Ziwi Peak to her diet after sending the manufacturer a list of her food allergies and their assurance that the food contained none of them. Disaster, her ears flared up really badly. As for growing back hair, I found that washing twice a week in Malaseb really helped with my girl. Good luck with your boy

Hi Sas, I have a dog with allergies and when she was at her worst and had lost her hair, her skin all went black . Since improving (on injections) her skin has returned to its normal pink colour.

I can give you some info on the Artemis Weight Managment. I have received great reports from people trying to shift some weight from their dogs, the first 3 ingredients are animal proteins with the 4th ingredient being salmon meal. Its only 6% fat and 20% protein. Most other "light" foods use a grain as the first few ingredients. The dogs on the Artemis are losing the kilos but reports are they are still feeling satisfied and maintaining lovely shiny coats. If you'd like a sample just pm me.

That is a lot of information! Not sure if I understood properly, so you're saying the amount of G and C in Artemis is a bit high? I do feed her Pernese Powder. I might order them and trial both of them. With my pup Im not to sure. Since he's on the RC Sensitivity Diet, he's improved but he's always hungry. But his stool (amount, frequency and consitency) has improved. I will keep him on this diet for another 5 weeks and then start introducing food to him. No I am not saying that the levels of G & C are too high, in fact the levels in the Artemis are quiet good but for a dog with arthritis its best to supplement with more. For example the jointguard has 500mg of Glucosamine per 2.5g and 400mg Chondroitin per 2.5g, to give you an idea my GSD gets 1 scoop per day of Joint Guard (5g) which represents 1000mg and 800mg respectively per day. Way more than is in ANY dry foods. Its a nice addition on the part of the dog food manufacturers but the amount thats in the foods is really no where near enough to make a huge difference. I cant give you the values of the Pernaease sorry as I cant actually find that info! Its so simlilar to Sasha's blend but they dont have the values listed either. Good luck with both your dogs.

There is a disease called Nasal Aspergillosis which makes the nose look very similar to this but there would also be a discharge and quite often little blood clots, perhaps that is what you are thinking of.

When comparing Orijen & Artemis, it must be remembered that the entire Orijen range is grain free, whereas ONLY the Maximal in the Artemis range is grain free, the rest of the range is not but does not contain any corn. The protein level in the Orijen is 42% (Large Puppy & Senior). The Artemis Med/Large Puppy Protein level is 27% and for the Med/Large Senior is 18%. The fat level should be taken into account also for both your dogs, they are at the more critcal ends of the age group when it comes to selecting foods In the Orijen the fat level in the Large Puppy is 16% and in the Senior its 14%. In the Artemis the M/L Puppy is 13% and the M/L Senior is 10% For your 'more mature' girl even though both Orijen & Artemis include glucosamine and chondroitin - Orijen has 800mg/kg of G and 150mg/kg C ...Artemis has 1200mg/kg of G and 400mg/kg of C, I would still rather see a dog supplemented with a product such as Joint Guard for the arthritis. I am not going to tell you which brand to feed but hopefully the above information will help you to see the substancial differences. Both Orijen and Artemis use very high quality ingredients so coatwise you should see about the same results.

Asava Calls For Improvements In Pet Food Labelling
k9katz replied to kyliegirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It is also worth remembering that the lack of legislative control in Australia over ingredients in pet food also applies to all Australian made DRY foods regardless of whether its a cheap supermarket brand or a top premium food. Basically if they dont want to state that a product is used in their food, they dont have to. -
Sas where did your vet send the blood test to? Even the things my dog isnt allergic to had a score with the lowest being 103. They state anything between 0 - 149 is a negative result. Did your vet show you a copy of the results? If your vet is saying they want to take more blood and send it somewhere different I'd be a bit supsicious, hope they dont charge you for that extra test. You could also try washing the affected area twice a week in Malaseb, I think it helped my girl a lot, just make sure you rinse thoroughly as it can actually iritate if left on. Another topical treatment I found is pure emu oil, wont do any harm and might actually help:) I use it on the inside flaps of her ears if they get dry and itchy, works a treat.

Wowee, that's a lot to be allergic too. We didn't do the $495 blood test, we did the $240 one as that is what I could manage at the time. Did you have to be off the Cortisone for the American test? Interesting about the tobacco smoke, I had wondered about that myself as second hand smoke has a shit load of chemicals in it. Hopefully the blood test should be back next week, I'll get the $495 one when I have some more $$$ My vet didnt mention a $240 test, just the USA one and no she didnt have to be off the cortisone for it. Here is a link for you to read and hopefully it might be of interest to others, some vets may not know this is an option. http://www.vetallergy.com/index2.html

It's great to hear a positive story! I'm glad you're girl is more comfortable now! Do you mind if I ask out of curiosity: What your girl was allergic too? How much was the Spot Test? How long did the test take to come back? How much are the ongoing injections? How long was it before you could take her off the Cortisone? Sorry for delay in replying, busy busy ,busy! Hmm what wasnt she allergic too! I did post it somewhere else on here...looking looking..ahh found it! Couch Grass, Paspalum,Orchard,Canary Grass,Johnson Grass, Dock/Sheep Sorrel, English Plantain,Oilseed Rape,Juniper/Cedar, Box Elder/Maple, Privet, Willow, Aspergillus,Alternaria, Cladosportum, Pullataria,Nigrospora, Cat hair, House dust mites, Chicken, Eggs, Milk, Turkey, Oatmeal, Barley,Tomato Pomace,Peas, Pyrethrum, Tobacco Smoke, House Fly and Malassezia. Spot test cost $495.00 Test had to go to USA, took approx 2 weeks to return Ongoing injections, first course which we are on now (9 months) was $525 but she has to have 2 lots of injections as she has so many allergies. We had her off the cortisone by December but she was still on the polaramine until Feb this year. Now its only occasionally she needs a polaramine. I was bathing her twice a week in Malaseb, which I honestly think helped heaps. She still gets a bath every couple of weeks and we now have to use the dryer as she has so much more hair  Good luck with your boy and the best advice I can give you is to be totally vigilant with the programme. I dont feed her ANY of the things she is allergic to, I even make her own dog biscuits as so many of them have some form of chicken in for flavouring. They cant make a serum to desensitize the food allergies., makes sense I guess as you can eliminate these. The injections get easier also when you've done them a few times. Let us know what the test reveals.

Hi Sas, I cant help with a cure for the lumps but I can offer advice on the allergy blood test. We have a GSD bitch who 12 months ago had such bad allergies that almost all her hair came out, she was covered in scabs and her ears were sore, her feet were chewed to the bone almost. We had the SPOT blood test done and started on the de-sensitizing injections on 28th Sept 2007. Now she is off all cortizone, has grown her hair back, no longer chews her feet and her ears are only occasionally itchy. The only time I find she starts to get a bit itchy is about a week before her next injection is due but we give her a polaramine and it settles her. Some may say that the blood test is no good but I have living proof in my bitch that it can work. Its worth a try, a lot cheaper than the intra-dermal testing AND a lot less invasive to the dog and he doesnt have to come off cortisone for the testing to be done. Also the SPOT test can test for food allergies whereas the intra-dermal cant. Good Luck!

Whole Dog Journal..best And Worst Dog Food
k9katz replied to panda's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Artemis also have a full range of puppy, adult, senior and diet foods for different size breeds that do have a lot less protein. Artemis Fresh Mix Adult contain 23% protein which is around the same as Eagle Pack Holistic, Innova, Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance etc... The food aimed at my medium to large breed pup is 43%. Too much protein. Twice as much as Nutro or EP Personally i think that the BEST food is what your dog does best on, theworst what it does not do well on I also think that there is no relevance in tellingus that X food is the best when it is not available here I wont pay $10 to find out that the foodi am feeding my dog is considered BAD when they doamazing on it. Nutro is not in the same class as Pal,makesme laugh to think it is being comparedtopal. That is like saying eye fillet steak is the same as a rump  Artemis Med - Lg Puppy: Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein (min) 27% Crude Fat (min) 15% Moisture (max) 10% Crude Fiber (max) 3% Calcium 1.0% Phosphorus, min. 0.8% Sodium, min. 0.27% Zinc, min. 200 mg/kg Selenium, min. 0.40 mg/kg Vitamin A, min. 22,000 IU/kg Vitamin D, min. 1,000 IU/kg Vitamin E, min. 300 IU/kg Omega 6, Fatta Acid, min. 2.6% Omega 3, Fatty Acid, min. 0.4% Can I please just amend this a little. The USA website which I am sure you got these figures from is waiting to be updated. But thank you Stormie for pointing out that Artemis dont just have the high protein "grain free foods" It seems to me some people may think that ALL Artemis is HIGH protein whereas this is not the case, its only the GRAIN FREE that is the high protein content. Artemis Med - Lg Puppy: Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein (min) 27% Crude Fat (min) 13% Moisture (max) 10% Crude Fiber (max) 3% Calcium 1.5% Phosphorus, min. 1.1% Sodium, min. 0.2% Zinc, min. 200 mg/kg Selenium, min. 0.40 mg/kg Vitamin A, min. 22,000 IU/kg Vitamin D, min. 1,000 IU/kg Vitamin E, min. 300 IU/kg Omega 6, Fatta Acid, min. 2.5% Omega 3, Fatty Acid, min. 0.4% I would ask that everyone also take this example into consideration when worrying that "type B foods contain a lot higher protein than type A foods." Food A contains 23% protein & 12% fat. Food B contains 27% protein & 13% fat. To keep your puppy in an ideal weight range you need to feed 3 cups of type A food a day, however because of the higher protein & fat you only need to feed 2.5 cups of type B food to keep the puppy in the same condition. A cup weighs approx 100g in both "Holistic Foods" so lets anaylize what the puppy is ACTUALLY consuming each day. Type A food - The LOWER protein = 300g x 23% = 69g protein ...... Fat 300g x 12% = 36g fat. Type B food - the HIGHER protein = 250g x 27% = 67.5g protein......Fat 250g x 13% = 32.5g fat. I would hope that this proves that we need to look further than the percentages of what is actually listed on the bags and to take into account what we actually need to feed of each type of food. This is emphasized even more with the ADULT foods that many advocate for large /giant breed puppies. Adult food Type C contains 20% protein & 9% fat and yet to keep condition on your pup you need to feed 350 g per day. Your pup is getting 70g protein per day and 31.5g fat per day. Food for thought? -
Thank you I wouldnt get too excited about this just yet! Its only just been released in USA so will be quiet a few months away from arriving in Australia. Artemis have a small breed adult 1.8kg Price is $21.65

Where Can I Get Kangaroo Meat & Bones?
k9katz replied to puggy_puggy's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Puggy Puggy, not sure where you are located but if you are anywhere near Tecoma, then Belgrave Pets Supplies have fresh roo tails and also fresh diced and minced kangaroo available. Thanks heaps k9katz. I am in the east and have friends that live up the hills so will drop in next time I am up that way. Do you have any idea on the pricing? I'm going out there tomorrow so will check up and let you know. -
Just to set people's minds at rest, Artemis dont only have the Grain Free Product ( Maximal Dog) There is also a full range of puppy, adult, senior and diet foods for diifferent size breeds that do have grains and a lot less protein. Grain Free is not going to suit all dogs. There is also a very good article on high protein on this website. http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=protein_myth Having said that though, I personally wouldnt be feeding a Large Breed Puppy on 42% protein either.

I had a look for ingredients in http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ and http://www.artemiscompany.com/ Those websites are a little out of date, the formulas have been improved on some of the lines.

Emergency - Labrador Swallowed Fish Hook!
k9katz replied to elsastella's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Well like I said, it was only a minimalistic look at the websites and to me they appear to be from different people even if they are suggesting similar possible help in the situation. Like I said, I suggested this from info from a book I have not from searching the Internet. You keep looking for your FACTUAL info, good luck, I'll just hope the poor lab passes the hook without problems before it needs an OP.
