  1. You also need to look at the feeding guides, you can actually end up feeding more protein from a food you need to feed more of. Here is an example that may help. Artemis Maximal has 42% protein and for a 5kg dog the feed guide is 50g per day, this works out to 21g protein per day. Canidae All Life Stages Grain Free has 34% protein and for a 5kg dog the feed guide is 74g per day, this works out to 25g protein per day. Black Hawk has 25% protein and for a 5kg dog the feed guide is 70g per day, this works out to 17.5g protein per day. It is also equally important to consider the quality and source of the protein being fed, if you feed your little dog a food that is high in quality meat protein, its far better for him than feeding a food with a lower protein sourced from things other than meat. High quality protein is also far more easily digested than low quality protein, another thing to consider. Hope I havent confused you even more:) Feeding your little dog a food that is high in quality protein should not be a problem.
  2. Do you own APFE Distributors Sherel? Do APFE make Black Hawk? I note on their website that they claim... Raw Materials All the raw materials are from Australian Origin and are GMO FREE and BSE FREE, I am very interested to know if Black Hawk claims that 100% of their ingredients are Australian grown.
  3. Not all canned foods are made equal and if you choose a good quality canned food I do not believe it to be poor value for money. The new Artemis range of dog and cat canned foods are a high quality option containing human grade ingredients only and no grains. Feedback has been extremely positive.
  4. Have to agree with Sagittarian here, the supply problem has been ongoing for over 9 years in our case, we gave up not only due to supply problems but also due to my own dogs loosing condition on Eagle ( the main reason we looked into importing our own food - Artemis) I also have heard every excuse under the sun, the best I believe was that the lakes froze over during winter so no stock could get through as this was there only form of transport. This latest report re permits is just ridiculous.

  6. I use Joint Guard in both powdered and the treat formulas and have found it to be very helpful.
  7. The Artemis Small Breed Adult is a complete super premium food and the kibble is very small and the freight to Broken Hill would only be $8.85 for a 6.8kg bag.
  8. Great News! The Artemis Canned range for cats and dogs is on its way and due to be in stores early in Jan '11. There will be a special when you buy any size bag of the Artemis dry food you will get a can FREE. Flavours will be Beef, Lamb or Chicken in the dog cans and Salmon, Chicken or Turkey in the cat cans.
  9. You are totally correct here dog0267 re the imported foods having to say EXACTLY where the ingredients are sourced from, not so for Australian products unfortunately.
  10. I didn't see anything like that on the bag, but will add the my cats really like it! They have their own food but if they find a stray bit of dog kibble on the ground they snap it up real quick. Must be yummy. They are asking because if the food has been irradiated then it is supposed to have that label on it. If it has been irradiated then it is dangerous for kitties. I assume they have a reason for asking?? I was in a Pet Barn Store about 2 months ago and saw the DVP range on the shelves with stickers on it saying it should not be fed to cats and yes that did start alarm bells ringing for me for the reasons that Jules states. The girl at Pet Barn told me that they ( Pet Barn) were now the exclusive reseller of this food. If you are feeding this to your dog and you also have a cat that can have access to the food then to be safe I would be asking the question.
  11. Just as a matter of interest, is there a sticker on the bag that says this food is not suitable for cats? Did you buy it at a Pet Barn Store?
  12. Given that we sell a huge amount of Artemis and that we've had no negative feedback, I am truly surprised to hear this. Will pass it on the to importer. Sags Thanks Sags, as the importer of Artemis I would just like to assure everyone that we do not have supply or quality issues, I have pm'd TerraNik and explained the situation which is just 1 supplier in Sydney who we have removed as a supplier due to reasons other than stock or quality. All our regular suppliers are well stocked up and more than happy to help you with your requirements.
  13. Try this website http://www.faythfulpetproducts.com.au/ they will advise on the best one for an Afghan Coat, I have tried almost every shampoo on the market over the past 10 years and recently bought some of this at a show. I have a highly allergic dog and since washing her in their Ultra Reconstructing Shampoo twice her coat is lovely, soft and re-growing and the best thing was she didnt react to it, smells really nice too and the effects are long lasting.
  14. I have 2 German Shepherds and they are both fine with the grinder, just lay there and let me do it, and I didn't start using it until they were both older. I still use the clippers too but I find with my dogs nails I cant see the quick as they have black nails, using the grinder is much easier for me to not cut into the quick and you can get the nails a lot shorter, I dont go anywhere near as short as they do on some of the websites I have seen. From 8 weeks of age all my puppies get used to having their feet held, ears looked in, teeth shown etc etc, all very important for when "things" need to be done to them. I would recommend the grinder but you need to introduce it slowly and with lots of positive reinforcement for success. Good luck.
  15. Oh thanks so much:) That's what it says on mine too. I couldnt for the life of me understand how I had lost it but I'd taken my computer apart while I had new carpet laid and I put the charger back on the computer speakers LOL, I then wondered why I had a spare battery eliminator! All is good now, dogs can have a manicure tomorrow!! Thanks again.
  16. In answer to your question, yes there are brands of dog food that are treated by AQIS when they arrive here, gamma irradiation is the most common form of treatment and as Danois said, this was the treatment done to the Orijen brand. You need to ask the various manufacturers of the imported pet foods if their products are subjected to any treatments mandated by AQIS and also ask them where the ingredients are sourced from. Just because a product comes in from USA or anywhere else for that matter, it doesnt neccesarily mean that the ingredients going into the foods are not from China etc and havent been subjected to treatments BEFORE going into the various foods, this also relates to Australian brands using any imported ingredients even if the food is Australian Made. Many treats found on our shelves are Gamma Irradiated upon entry, an example is imported Pigs Ears, rawhides etc. Until legislation is introduced that makes it law that products must be labelled if they have been irradiated, unfortunately you may never know. If a product is labelled, "must not be fed to cats" you can be pretty sure this has been treated as AQIS brought in this rule after the terrible saga with Orijen. Hope this helps.
  17. Hopefully someone can help me! I have a Sontax rotary tool that I bought from Bunnings, I'm sure I have read on here that others have this unit. I got some cables mixed up and now dont know which is the charger!! The only 1 I have left over says its a 6v charger but the unit states its a 3.6v. If anyone else has this unit can you please tell me what the voltage is on your charger as by a process of elimination, this is the only cable left that it could be - unless of course I have thrown it out during my clean up!! I am not electrically minded and dont want to blow it up!
  18. Happy to send you Artemis to your home address, ($8.00 postage) and we can work on regular orders so you dont have to remember when to go collect food. We will work out how long a bag lasts and then send a bag before you run out.
  19. Hi Trish, Artemis weight management is 6% fat and 20% protein which is 1 of the lowest available.
  20. I have been looking for a service of someone that will come and stay in my house with my dogs for a couple of nights while we have to go away on business and cannot find anything. Lots that will come and feed and walk the dogs but none that stay overnight. I am in Northern suburbs of Melbourne - does anyone know of such a service in this area? They have a doggy door so can let themselves in and out but I would feel better if someone stayed overnight with them.
  21. The Vet Practice in Yarrambat wouldnt be too far of a drive for you, probably 1/2 hour. They are very pro a 3 yearly schedule and very pro the natural approach to treating animals.
  22. There should be absolutely no reason why anybody should have trouble obtaining Artemis. There are many online stores who are happy to freight the food all over Australia or for those who do have trouble the product will happily be shipped directly from Artemis. Keep checking the Artemis website as new retailers are being added all the time.
  23. GSD female, did the "spot" test ( Spectrum Labs in USA) which is a blood test so far less invasive. Came back positve to 23 items and borderline to 6. She has been on the injections for 2 yrs and 8 months now and they have been a huge success. She has to have 2 a month to cover all the allergens and no it isnt cheap but its a small price to pay to see her happy and hairy! Its very interesting to read Dogs4Fun post re taking the dogs off the program, we tried to space the injections out a little, only got up to 5 days extra and did notice that she was not so great so I dont think I will ever be able to get her off them, she is 9 now. Good luck with your dog:)
  24. My goodness! I hope you NEVER reach that level of food I think you have misread the feeding guide somewhere as that would be 1kg - 1.25kg of food per day. Depending on the puppy's age the feed guide for a 14kg puppy is as follows: 3 -4 months - approx 375g per day split into 3 meals per day so only 125g per feed 5 -7 months - approx 280g per day split into 2 -3 meals per day 8- 12 months - approx 215g per day Of course if you are adding other foods to puppy's diet then you need to cut the above back. I really encourage people to use these feeding guides as just that, a starting guide, each puppy is different, some will need more food than others etc, its far better to monitor your puppy's weight and keep a close eye on things like feeling but not seeing ribs, a waistline etc and then adjusting the food accordingly. :p
