  1. I check out Applaws dog food every time i go to the supermarket, but have never picked up a bag... I know a high price tag does not a good food make, examples- Science diet, Royal Canin etc etc But my 2 issues are, how do they make a decent product for $17 for 2.7kgs, and the other is that it is a supermarket food, but that could be me being a snobby pet food buyer lol The food my dog is currently on is Stay Loyal, which is $47 for 3kgs, i think the ingredients are better than applaws, more meat content, and higher protein/fat. But other than that i cant seem to fault Applaws. I know Applaws canned food is made in Thailand I just hope they don't source their meat for the dry food from there too...
  2. Did anyone see the Frontier pet lady on shark tank the other night? Those bozo investors had no interest in it, they obviously haven't realised how the pet food business is booming!! My mum gave me the rest of her bag of the beef flavour after her dog passed away, however i struggled to get those balls soft! Soaking in warm water for a few minutes did nothing, they were still hard as rock. This was 6mths ago and she'd had the bag for 5 or so months prior, I'm sure i heard somewhere they had changed their formulation along the way, or the bag was too old? To be honest, Nugget gets mostly raw/homecooked and kibble makes up a small portion of his over all diet, he gets between 1/4 and 1/2 a cup a day of dry food. I just want to feed him the best i can find of ALL foods. @crazydoglady99 You're a gem xx
  3. @crazydoglady99 Please don't apologise. Your posts are not derailing, they are helpful and informative. Please get off your hands
  4. Wow thank you all for the insight, much appreciated I'm kinda like a kid in a candy store when it comes to dog foods, as when i had my last dogs the best dry food available was Royal Canin and i so wished we had a choice of better kibbles to choose from, and now here we are and there are quite a few to choose from. I want to try them ALL
  5. I dislike them because a person in our street decided it was fine to put their staffie in a bird cage, not Avery, but a bird cage out in their back yard. The RSPCA's response was "that the owners can legally confine their dogs for up to 22 hours a day". They didnt even bother to come out and check on the poor dog
  6. Has anyone fed this food to their dogs? Did they like it/do well on it? Getting past the stupid packaging and my opinion of Pete Evans, i haven't seen a food with better ingredients/macros. I'm awaiting a sample of the turkey/pork dry food: Turkey and Chicken Meal, Pork Meal, Beef Meal, Tapioca/Cassava, Beef Tallow (preserved with mixed Tocopherols), Fish/Tuna Meal, Beef Broth, Alfalfa, Marine Fish Oil, Coconut Oil, Arrowroot, Whole Egg Powder, Yucca Shidigera, Kelp, Kale, Parsley, FOS, Hydrolysed Yeast, Turmeric, Glucosamine, Green Lipped Mussel, Vitamin Supplements (A, D, E, K, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, Choline, Biotin), Organic Trace Mineral Supplements (Zinc, Iron, Copper, Manganese, Iodine, Selenium), Natural Antioxidants (mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract) Vitamin E, Taurine, Vitamin C., Probiotics (Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis) and Multi-Strain Enzyme Blend. https://www.healthyeverydaypets.com.au/
  7. Granted, my dog is a small breed breed. But a 3kg bag of dry food lasts him months! What brand food are you feeding them?? I have never heard of a dog eating over 1kg of dry food a day, let a lone 3kgs....
  8. I have decided to go with Stay Loyal small breed. Nugget absolutely devoured it, which he has not done with any other kibble! I have always had to add toppings and extras to get him to finish off a bowl. It has a real meaty smell which all the other dry foods haven't had.
  9. Someone recommended Stay Loyal dry food, and a bonus is it's an Aussie company! I ordered a sample of the "small bites". First 3 ingredients are a meat meal. https://stayloyal.com.au/salmon-turkey-grain-free-dog-food.html
  10. Yeah it is. I'd use it as more of a supplement/add on to his regular food. Plus he's a small dog that doesn't eat a whole lot.
  11. I'm also going to give this one a try, similar to Ziwi peak but with bigger chunks. https://www.mypetwarehouse.com.au/absolute-holistic-air-dried-dog-food-chicken-hoki-1kg-p-31642
  12. My dog would rather bury his bones than chew/eat them. He's the first dog I've ever had that didn't LOVE bones! I either buy mince with the bones already ground up, or i hammer chicken necks and cut them up into tiny pieces and mix them in with his food, my cat also gets some.
  13. I feed mostly raw/home made food, but i also supplement with dry food. I am currently rotating between Canidae pure sky and Wellness Core. They are both unfortunately US foods. I have tried Meals for Mutts and Ivory Coat, but Nugget wasn't very keen on either of these, he gobbles up the Canidae and Wellness though. Was just curious in the brands people here feed their puppers.
  14. @westiemum Where's Pete's Petfood located? I googled, and nothing came up. I'm down South, not far from Mclaren Vale.
  15. It looks like a run of the mill food, much better than supermarket brands. But for the price, there are better foods available.
  16. Today is day 7, and we're going back to the vet for a check up. I am hoping and praying he's going to say we can resume normal activity.. Every time he runs full pelt or jumps up on things i just about have a coronary. I'm hanging to take him back to the beach, which is his most favourite place in the world!
  17. Well it's 6:30pm and he is already bugging me trying to play tuggie and throw his ball for him! I didn't think he'd be up and about this quickly!! I picked him up from the vet at 1pm, he was groggy and slept for a couple of hours. He then got up and scoffed his dinner, and now he's acting completely normal. It's been years since i've dealt with this, and my dogs back then were very placid, docile female shih tzu's. The complete opposite in temperament to this guy
  18. As I'm typing, my dog is in the vet getting desexed. He is a very energetic Jack Russell. I am having anxiety as to how to keep him quiet and not exercising him for the next week or so. I am nearly certain he will drive himself and us nuts not going out for walks, he is used to 2 good walks every day. Are lead walks, or leisurely walks ok. I wont let him romp around with other dogs. Am just curious what you guys did after having your boys neutered.
  19. After all this, the little bugger wont eat it unless i add stuff to it!! I specifically chose TOTW due to it's higher meat content, and was hoping it would smell and taste good to Nugget. It really irks me to say that his favourite dry food is Royal Canin mini junior. The ingredients suck though, and unlike Taste of the wild doesn't have a high meat content, not to mention all of the unnecessary and questionable ingredients it contains. I would love to know what they add to make it so palatable to dogs... It also was the only dry food my incredibly fussy shih tzu ate years ago. We didn't have the wonderful variety of pet foods back then that we have now, and RC was one of the better ones at the time...
  20. Thanks @Papillon Kisses . He has separation anxiety, and will cry and howl whenever we go out! We are following all of the tips, but would like to add more bits and pieces to the arsenal, as he loves watching dogs on tv. @The Spotted Devil I found one dvd on Amazon for $126 Not sure what else to put in the search engine there..
  21. Does anyone know where to purchase videos for dogs here in Aus? Something i can put on for my anxious dog when i go out. I have seen some on ebay, but they all come from overseas and are ridiculously expensive! Surely there are Aussie retailers who sell them, but thus far I've had no luck finding any.
  22. I don't feel better that there was a worse behaved dog there, it seems that so many Jack Russells have this attitude problem, quite a few that i have met any way. I am determined to make him a well behaved and polite member of the dog world. I don't want to say "oh he's a Jack, that's just what they're like" and just give up. I am planning to stick with obedience and beyond until he passes with flying colours.
  23. Thank you for your replies guys. He was slightly better at obedience this week, so hopefully we are making some headway. There was another Jack there, who had the same feisty attitude, but much worse than Nugget.
  24. I have yet to find a dog food with better ingredients and meat sources than TOTW. I started off with Ivory Coat, but i just like the ingredients of taste of the wild better. Just sucks that it's an American food. I might rotate between Ivory coat and TOTW.
  25. I touched on this briefly in one of my other posts, which at that stage i wasn't sure if it was rough play or aggression...Well i am now positive Nugget's behaviour toward other puppies is aggression. He will go up and sniff briefly and then growl and lunge going in for an attack! This happens nearly every time we come across a puppy, so i now leash him when i spot another pup coming in our direction. He is absolutely fine, polite and plays well with adult dogs, but puppies are an absolute no go.He is 6mths old on the 12th of May, not yet neutered and we have just started attending obedience training. I mentioned this issue to the trainer, and she said it's a mix of testosterone and prey drive... Hmmmmmm. She saw him in action when the pups had an off lead play session, he had a go at a little poodle pup. He had a time out and we had to watch from the other side of the fence for a few minutes, after which we were allowed back in, this time there was no aggression, but he went for the biggest dog in the group (8mth old German shorthaired pointer) and grabbed hold of his back leg and started furiously humping!! I am at a loss. I have never had behavioural problems with any of my past dogs, and i have only ever owned females.
