  1. Thanks everyone If she wasn't a shiba I think I'd be at the vet... however, I have seen her act like this before when I've done something she's disagreed with (like wearing a collar, or a harness or the worst of all insults, the little nappy when she went into season). I've just never known it to last an entire day associated with shaking and exhaustion. She's either been in really significant pain or she's a really great actress. I gave her that tramadol, took her out for a short midnight walk to do a big pee and she seems slightly happier with her tail at half-mast instead of almost between her legs. I'm going to move her crate into my bedroom and hope that once she knows we're asleep she'll give up and get some rest herself. At least I can check on her during the night and she can tell me if she's in real trouble because I'll be right there. I've turned the heating up as well so it's toasty inside. Really appreciate all the help. Thank you soo much
  2. Oh thank you so much MUP!!! Her trembling just got really bad and I thought I'd overdosed her...
  3. Thanks everyone - I called the emergency vet (why didn't I think of that... what's wrong with me!) and they told me to give her a full tablet of tramadol instead of half and come down if she's shown no improvement in 30-60 minutes. I was a bit of an idiot this morning trying to discourage her from licking the wound so I sprayed 'puppy-off' on my hands and rubbed it around (not on) her cut but of course that stuff is horrible and I can't seem to get it off my hands 100% so her chicken tasted terrible I assume! Had to convince the bf to handle the nasty raw chicken but we hid her tramadol in it and she has just eaten 20mg (I really hope that's not overdoing it for a 7kg dog.... the lady I spoke to checked dosages but it seems like a lot!)
  4. She generally hates being held or stroked for long but accepted it on my lap for a short period of time. I thought we were winning the battle, but then she suddenly went nuts and tried to jump onto the floor which of course hurt her tummy, making her shriek and cry... she wouldn't let me try again I sat on the ground with her and she accepted pats whilst lying down with my hand ON her, but after 5 minutes wouldn't take any more and got up for some more stubborn standing
  5. Good evening all My 10 month old shiba was desexed yesterday with 'no complications.' She peed fine (despite some whimpering) after we picked her up and passed a small stool last night before we tucked her into bed. She was very trembly and miserable yesterday but that's to be expected. I thought she'd be ok. However, today she literally has not sat down once. She has been on her feet, standing since 6am. She refused all food and water all morning so we couldn't give her the painkiller prescribed, but at about 4pm I got her to eat some chicken with the tablet. It's only a twice-daily pain pill so I can't give her more now. She has been trembly all day, probably because she's getting more and more tired from standing. Now she's swaying on her feet and falling asleep so staggering to the side, catching herself and then starting all over again. Nothing I do can convince her to lie down. I've moved her crate into the room where we're sitting and put her in there and she's just standing in there, eyes closed, occasionally staggering into the sides of the crate. She normally puts herself to bed at about 9pm so this is beyond her bed time and I'm worried that she'll just stay like this all night and totally, completely exhaust herself which isn't what she needs when she should be healing. I've never seen anything like this before... her wound is clean, dry and not red or hot to touch. She isn't hot around the ears, I don't think it's infected. She's had a small amount of food and water and has peed tonight so nothing is screaming 'emergency' but if your dog was in this situation would you take her to the vet? I'm assuming all they'd offer is sedation which I'd normally refuse... so I'm really unsure what to do Thank you
  6. Trying to decide if it's worth driving into town and fighting for parking on this freezing cold day... has anyone gone and loved it? Worth $36 for two ppl just to get in?
  7. I hope you get some answers Regarding the human case, it was a GA for a varicose vein stripping procedure. Was in a small private hospital (not a big public teaching hospital) but they accepted students, possibly because there's not a lot of other hospitals for students to go in that part of Victoria Ever since that day I have been SO preoccupied about patients regaining consciousness during anaesthetic I haven't enjoyed assisting on surgeries much. Every little spontaneous twitch a patient makes sends me into a panic. Means I make a great impression with the surgeons.... I have, however, never again seen an anesthetist leave a patient unattended without someone in his/her place that knows what they're doing
  8. I was a med student watching a routine elective procedure on an elderly gentleman (human). The anesthetist left the room to have a cuppa, leaving his nurse to watch the machines. Not sure what went wrong but the patient regained consciousness and woke up half way through his (very painful) surgical procedure..... We were yelling for the anaethetist and sending runners to get him, but all a bit late for the patient who attained awareness and is unlikely to forget that experience for a very long time. There is no excuse for any staff member to leave the room during surgery if they're fulfilling a role, no matter how routine the procedure is, or how well it's going. Human or animal, doesn't matter
  9. Thank you :) Cinder used to LOVE munching for hours on those bull pizzles but now won't touch them... fickle dog
  10. Do you know if little dogs like munching on these too? My shiba is a fussy little princess who likes something one day and ignores it the next so I'm interested in trying this but if they're really only for big dogs who love to chew I might be wasting one that should go to a more deserving dog as they're so hard to get!
  11. I saved up and bought a Miele front loader No regrets, washes well, never has a hissy fit about anything, removes most of the doggy hair (not all) and is quiet
  12. I'm happy with my vet in Eltham but that's prob even further for you
  13. I inspected my current property which didn't stipulate pets or no-pets but after we met the agent she went to bat for us with the owners and they agreed to 'one small dog.' All was great until we went to get the keys and sign everything on the day we were moving in. The agent had us sign a 'this dog will be an outside dog ONLY at all times' form which was never discussed or agreed upon verbally prior. My partner and I were pretty annoyed about this because she is 80% inside and 20% outside if she's having a good day. Didn't know whether to push it or leave it, but decided to fight other battles with them (of which there are many and varied) and just let that one go. Regardless of the signed form, if there was any damage from the dog within the property we'd have to pay for it anyway so I'm still unsure if I should have refused to sign it and told them she'd be coming inside. Again, I'm like a broken record, but the day I never have to sign another lease is a fantastic day to look forward to...
  14. Sorry Hope she's having a great time wherever she is <3
  15. My bf and I used to play a lot of WoW so we wanted to use a character from the game, but there are surprisingly few female characters and we didn't like/couldn't shorten most of the female names (Sylvanas, Jaina, Ysandre, Alextrasa etc) so we ended up choosing "Sindragosa" but had to shorten it because that's a BIG name for a little 8 week old puppy! So she became "Sindra" which quickly turned into "Cinder" and that's her name now
  16. What a sweet little clip from a lovely doggy family :) Lucky puggy to have ppl who love and care for him <3
  17. Any communication with potential adopters at all would be a great first step for certain rescues.... My friend came to me after applying/enquiring for about 5 dogs over a period of time without a single reply to see if I could do something about it.... In my earlier post I explained my experience. Even if they think you won't match ANY dog, a simple email, with whatever excuse they want, would be better than silence. It's just rude and unnecessary. That dog I asked after is still on PetRescue...
  18. Get a shiba inu! They're awesome :) Mine has boundless energy but has an 'off' switch and will go from madly running around to calmly lying by my feet within seconds
  19. I've been a foster carer for a while and have a bit to do with rescue but recently I was enquiring about dogs on PetRescue through well known Melbourne rescue groups and despite spending AGES filling out detailed forms with lots of information, I simply didn't receive a reply for a dog I was really interested in (for my Mum). They may well have decided we weren't suitable for the dog I was asking about but a simple email would have explained that to me. Waiting for days, then weeks and then finally understanding I was never going to hear back from them was really disappointing to be honest. I know we're all volunteers, I know we're all busy and have other lives besides resuce, and I sure know this has been brought up by people before but now I have personal experience with trying to talk someone down from just skipping all the c*ap and going to the trading post to get their no-questions-asked puppy because they see nothing wrong with it and can't understand why I'm so passionately trying to get them to adopt a rescue dog. We don't help ourselves sometimes.... That dog is still listed on PetRescue. Who knows if it's actually still up for adoption, or if the foster carer was even advised someone has been enquiring about their foster dog. The whole thing is so confusing. Why go to SO much expense and effort getting these dogs into foster homes if you can't move them through? Being knocked back is a lot better than being ignored.....
  20. Oh.. I missed this. Thanks for posting that link, I didn't know they'd closed what a shame
