Supa Poopa

Sable the supa poopa is an outdoor dog, and is pooing increasingly closer to the house. He used to go down the back of the yard to do his business but now has begun to get closser and closer and closer. Now he poos just off the back step (on the grass) and has also started to poo on the pavement close to the house too.

My OH and I pick up his poop every other day but that doesn't seem to make any difference, we can't walk in our backyard with out hitting a 'land mine'.

Do you think this a behavioural problem or lazyness?

Any products on the market I can put on my lawn to deter him?

He is regular, I don't ever see him doing his business (he must do it while I not home, so I can't catch him)

:) I've picked up my 5 month old pup from the MIL's after he spent 24 hours there and pooped all over the artificial grass just outside her back door :scold: .

Doesn't do it here- he has a few "spots" and returns to these.

Sorry to be so personal about your dog's bowels, but......

How much poop is he producing? It must be a lot if a daily poop scoop is insufficient :scold: .

Does his current food agree with him, do you think? i.e. Coat looks good, reasonable breath, normal energy level, clear eyes and ears, good weight, normal stools.

Stools should be firm and small-ish (proportional to size of dog, of course :D ).

His poops are 'regular'. We pick them up every other day to see if that would make a difference.

Someone meantioned to me about the weather... it has been shitty (no pun) weather lately, I wonder if he is just being lazy. ie not wanting to get wet.

I thought there might be a citronella based product that I could put on my lawn to deter him.

The Pee Post looks like it might be worth a go.

Cheers everyone

i thought dogs were attracted to where they have been previously - you might do better if you just move the poo rather than clearing it away. Also does he play on the grass? - dogs tend not to poo where they socialise...

He does poo where he plays, he even steps in it himself ! :(

I'll give moving it rather than discarding it a go.

Cheers

Hi Rhi,

I'm taking a slightly different tack here! Firstly, I'd be picking up every day. Mine never go in the same spot twice, and also hate the wet grass. Smell will seap into the concrete, and when they smell, they go, hence the repeat performances on the concrete near the door. "Delete" will take the smell away. Don't use amonia based products as this only encourages them.

Your dogs poop will be proportionate to how much he eats. If you buy a supermarket brand of dogfood, they have more "fillers" in them, so the fillers just make their way out of the dog in the same amounts they went in.

If you buy a premium complete dry dogfood, (Hills, Iaams, Ekanuba etc) they have more nutrition per meal, so the output is less, and the smell (whilst never pleasant) will be much more tolerable than if fed on canned foods.

Now before you say - its too expensive, please bear in mind that your dog will require less food in the first place, as practically all of it will be digested and absorbed. It costs about 40 cents extra per day for a premium food from the vets, or stockfeeds place. When I switched from supermarket food to premium food, the output was halved!! A definite bonus in my book!

Thanks for the advice Garloch,

As a consequence of him leaving his 'parcels' on the footpath I have been clearing it away daily.

The weather here hasn't been as miserable as it had been... which is helping, as ShellyBeggs said I wouldn't want to go all the way down the back when it's cold! I'm begining to think he had been lazy.

I'm still looking to by a pee post but haven't been able to find one in store yet.

When it comes to his diet, the quality of his food isn't the issue. He is regular and the amount is relative to the amount he eats. Thankyou for your concern regarding his diet but he is on Hills and has been for months. The issue i've been having isn't what his stools are like but where he leaves them.

Cheers

Rhi

Oh I love this site!! It is such a relief that its not just my dog pooing on pavers close to the house!

I think the weather plays a big part...but he likes to poo in the garage which is not good as you much watch your step getting out of the car!! I think because it is warmer in there and out of the cold and wet weather...but not near his bed/food or main living/enteraining area...though in the last week...he has pooed closer to his bed and in the main pergola area...

I am going to pressure hose down all the pavers and also try and find some of that deterant spray! Also this weekend fence off the garage so he cant go in there anymore...perhaps moving his poos to the back of the yard will attract him to go there?? Here's hoping!!
