Coat Colouring Question

Recommended Posts

What do groomers use to colour coats with. I want to do something to my goldie but the hardest question is....

How to dye a RED standard poodle? She is dark red and I would love to hear suggestions.

Also deopending on what is used for colour how long do you think it will last? And how long should it be left to set on the coat before its washed off?

I was thinking food colour.

manic panic is used at some places,i have used this on my own dogs and it works great, but make sure you use gloves ,if you dye their ears and tail like i do with mine use cling rap to stop the dye from going every where, with your poodle maybe a dark colour ,when she is clipped next keep some fur to do a test that way if the colour turns out shocking its not on her  i also use this on my own hair sometimes and my hair is brown it still works but not as strong as it would on lighter hair, since she is a girl i would most likely pick a dark purple ,my hair is darker than her fur and it worked well, leave on for 20 minutes if not strong enough do again it should last around 1 month 1/2 ,you also may want to use plastic under the dogs and have some else there to help ,i put the dye on with gloves than my cusin is keeps her hans clean incase dye gets on the dog where it should be ,she than wets the hair and rubs in shampoo than wets and repeats untill the dye is out  it is a bit of hard work but pays of in the long run  we do it for special accations and have been useing manic panic for years .we bye ours on ebay  good luck

the colour used on sugar is hot hot pink

Hi goldies - because your girl is red you won't get a very good result. I would do a test patch. My old girl is very pale apricot ?cream and we dyed her pink once and a white male at the same time. He turned out fluro pink and she was a lovely antique rose colour.

OMG that is tooo cute.

I have thought about doing my pugs tails for special events but not sure I would be happy with them having to stay that way for a month and a half. How often do you bath during that month and a half? Maybe it wouldn't stay as long if you bathed more often?

Just found the Manic Panic on ebay.

Hey there,

I specialise in dog dyeing. I use a product called Dyex. It is formulated in Japan and is imported by a supplier on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It is PH neutral for dogs skin so wont cause any irritation. It is apparently semi permanent but I find it is permanent. It fades but has to grow out. They do pretty much every colour but black which they are trying to formulate now and should be available soon. They also do a neutralising agent which when mixed with the colours will create pastels.

If you have an ABN you will pay around $25 per tube. Retail is extra.

In regards to application, I generally paint it on with a dyeing brush and then work it in with my fingers, always use gloves by the way! I leave it in for about half an hour and then rinse and shampoo.

Depending on your girls natural colour will determine the outcome. If she is very dark then they wont be so bright.

I used this product in a creative grooming competition in the Brisbane Pet Expo (Spectacular Petacular) at the RNA in March and ended up coming 2nd. Its really bright and got the judges attention!

Danni.

I have used chalks (like the ones used for sidewalk art) and natural food colouring to dye dogs before. The food colouring is messy and you have to watch if it gets damp as it can come off in things. I like the way the chalk works as it is quick and simple to use, but it is really only good for smallwork - tails and ears ect. I once did a rainbow tail on one of my pyrs as practice when I was bored one day. Looked pretty good ! :rainbowbridge: . I have only done colour work on very light coloured/white dogs though. Darker dogs are a lot harder and need better dyes that I have used.

my dogs get bathed once a week, but if you where to wash your dogs a few times at bath time in the places you have dyed it would come out faster :rainbowbridge: ex if you use human shampoo.
