  1. Hi, I have just started tracking and need to get a harness can anyone suggest a good one ? Thanks
  2. yet again i am sorry i posted i really should know better by now but i just want defuse the rants by adding Yes agreed some clubs are run by volunteers and dont have behaviourists but the club i go to has a behaviourist and has paid staff so its not all. Agreed nobody can give 100 % correct advice without seeing the dog and you really need to see a good behaviourist before trying anything else yourself.
  3. Good Luck it will seem like a lot of hard work now but it will be rewarded a million fold when you have a peaceful home and happy relaxed dogs
  4. I am totally with you Kavik as i am doing the same and seeing the same good results as you. When i see another dog coming i give us some space get my dogs attention and start playing the you get a click and a treat for looking at the other dog and no attention at all for grumping at it. (its kinda like free shaping) I have tried powering past before even running past but it doesnt teach him anything and he still manages to get a grump in as we pass. I sometimes sit on a bench (slightly away from the path) and let the other dogs parade past and play the click game this works really well but off lead dogs can be a problem and yes I have shouted at a few stupid owners in the past as well. Keep up the good work
  5. lol they are so funny my boy drops, scoots backwards (whilst still dropped) then puts his head on his paws - hes such a nutter
  6. I know with my boy the behaviours i have free shaped are stronger and tend to be in his repertoire of offered behaviours along with the ones i am most excited and i guess smiley about. If i taught a sit stay i am sure i wouldnt be very excited but if my dog stood up on his hind legs for a few seconds (i really need to try that one) or walked backwards for the first time i would be over the moon and he would definately know about it. I think some dogs like doing somethings better than others (they are all bred for different things) and some things stick in a dogs head better than others but it might be the mixture of treats and smiley happy praise that really motivates them
  7. I use a dog roll called Tucker Time is preservative free and is made with human grade meats and can be used as a complete diet (they also do a kibble) i find if i slice it up then cook it in the oven for twenty minutes it seals the edges so when i chop it into little bits it doesnt turn to mush in my treat bag the cooking also makes it smell great. When i am going to throw treats i just chop them slightly bigger.
  8. yes i agree Aidan2, I connect my lead to the harness and to a flat collar at the same time i dont have a double lead but it still works really well (I use a sense-ible harness). The other good thing about front connection harnesses is that the dog accepts them straight away unlike some of the head collars where you need to get the dog used to them for a while. Do any of your local training clubs do loose lead walking workshops ? I went on one a last year and it really helped.
  9. Hi I use a Sense-ible front connection harness and love it. I got mine from here http://www.schoolfordogs.com.au/shop.htm the website has lots of info on them so have a read and see what you think.
  10. Hi I fancy a bit of a change from grooming and was wandering if anyone knew of any animal related jobs going South of Adelaide. When i am not grooming i also instruct at my local dog school. If anyone hears of anything i would love to hear about it
  11. Where are you in SA jazawayaya ?? The school i belong to has small classes (max 8 dogs). We run naughty but nice classes for dogs with poor social skills and also do one on one behavioural lessons. We train on ten acres of land so have plenty of space to spread the dogs out if we need to. Our website is www.schoolfordogs.com.au and we are based down south in silver sands.
  12. Hi I am an instrustor at School for dogs (Its on Cox Rd in Silver Sands) We have our own dances with dogs group called Hip Hop Hounds with classes on Tuesdays nights. Its such a shame you just missed out on a dancing workshop we had Anne Bulke over from Queensland (she is a dwd judge). Give Carole an email or a call (details on the website) she will be over the moon to have a new person join Hopefully see you there Angie

The school for dogs website is http://www.schoolfordogs.com.au They have spaces for observers only at this time. Should be a good day maybe see you there
  14. Thanks everyone for your comments (i know this topic has been covered before) I am more interested in doing the NDFT course now i think as i want to understand all four quadrants not just the positive ones and would like to have a recognised qualification. I am a bit concerned about spending so much time in Melbourne or Sydney as I live in Adelaide but will have to cross that bridge when i come to it. Thanks again
  15. Hi I am just beginning to look into doing a Dog Behaviour and Dog Training course. I have been assisting in classes at our local dog school for over a year and have just in the last couple of months started taking classes. The school i instruct at believes in positive / reward based training but dont push it as far as Delta would have it - we do say no ha ha I am learning loads all the time and love what i am doing but would like to get a formal qualification in the future. I know a few people who are doing the Delta course and to be honest it has put me off doing it as i dont believe in some of what they teach but wandered if anyone had done the NDTF long distance course. Thanks
  16. Hi Depending on where abouts you are in Adelaide you can try the Southern Animal Hospital in Port Noarlunga the puppy pre school is run by Carole Husein who runs the School for Dogs in Sellicks Beach (www.schoolfordogs.com.au) you may have already contacted her as she is on the Delta website and trains using reward based training. Hope this helps
  17. ok so we have bagged small dogs enough how about giving some advice on how to help small dogs get over there small dog problems.
  18. Speaking in the defence of the small dog owner. Hi, I have a small x breed who sadly has what is commonly known as small man sydrome, he is very happy and playful with dogs he knows but when faced with a new dog becomes very fearful and growls, barks and lunges at them. I have taken him to training since he was 10 weeks old (he is now 16 months old) and he is doing very well, he keeps up with the border collies and goldies in most things but his grumpyness often lets him down. I consider myself to be a responsible owner and try to avoid putting him in situations where he gets stressed but sometimes these situations are out of my control. I have gates at the front of my house and when i am out my dogs are kept in the garden, we often have escapee dogs wandering past and pestering my dogs from outside the gate (which makes my little guy worse) so i am now considering fencing off part of my garden so my dogs can no longer get to the front of the house which would be a shame as they love to sit and watch the world go by. I have just got back from walking my little dog we avoided the beach as there were a few dogs on it and opted for a small empty park. I was working on our healwork (onlead) when a lady came up with her big dog off lead the dog came trotting over to us as i looked up in horror she called over saying its ok she wont hurt your dog and my reply was yes but mine will hurt yours please call her off but of cause she didnt my only option was to drop my lead run off calling my dog in a playful manor in order to get him to follow me and not get grumpy with the big dog which thank god he did and calm was restored. I agree a lot of small dogs get away with murder compared to big dogs but from someone who has spent the last year trying to get the grumps out of her dog please dont judge every owner.
  19. Alternately we're there ourselves in early November doing seminars, workshops and private lessons. Hi Cosmolo I was just wandering what your seminars & workshops would be covering in November, i had a quick look at your website but couldnt find anything

  22. sorry didnt mean to offend he is a cross but he mainly looks shih tzu
  23. Hi I have a 1 year old shih tzu x who is doing really well with obedience, clicker and even doggy dancing, we are just starting agility and he loves it. He is a really happy boy at home and with dogs he knows but gets scared with new dogs and growls, barks and lunges as soon as they look at him. I try to avoid getting close to dogs when we walk to avoid him stressing but occassionally we get close during training classes or walks and he goes crazy i just wandered if anyone has helped a dog get over this problem. I am willing to try anything to help the little guy.
