Yes.

Some breeders will eye test at 6/8 weeks for CHC .It hasnt commonly been done in Australia is it hasnt been an issue but with some new lines here breeders have been.

Do both parents hold current eye clearances by a specialist as only an eye specialist can do it??

Vet checked generally means the puppy is taken to the vet & has eyes, ears, heart/lungs, mouth/teeth, temp, testicles on boys, patellas & a general feel all over the body etc. My vet does a printed list of what has been checked.

Vet check does not mean specialist tests, its just a general health check.

Eye clear certificate should be a piece of paper stating what has been tested for & the result.

Thank you for your help. The owner has said 'Both parents don't have any health problems and in both lines there is no issues either'.

Thank you for your help. When I asked about eye clear certificate they said said "Both parents don't have any health problems and in both lines there is no issues either". They asked if that would be enough. (The breeder is getting the puppies vet-checked though). It is going to be our family pet and I am not sure whether I should ask for one to be done.

I would ask if they are members of the Canine Controlling Body of their state.

I would also ask for an eye certificate for the puppy OR eye certificates for both parents.

If they are not prepared to give you any of these things.... run fast.

Not all breeders use the ACES scheme so dont worry there.

If there members of the schnauzer club they will be registered breeders :) ( i now as where members & you have to be a canine member).

As in my other post not many do puppy eye clearances but both parents should have current ones.

Ours are done yearly or well before a planned mating

Hi - thank you all for your responses to my queries. I feel more confident now about asking for Eye certificates from the parents of my puppy.

:D

I would also suggest you get your own vet to check the pup very soon after you bring him/her home. It may be some $'s you hadn't factored in and while the pup should be fine, it will provide a baseline of its health going forward, with a vet who will regularly see your pup.

Some say overkill (I can hear them all now) but its something I will always do with my new animals, dogs, cats and horses.

We encourage all our owners to get there new pup vet checked

Wait a minute, many breeders are members of the states controlling body and members of their breeds club.

Many still only breed for the pet market. How can you be sure if just told...no problems in the line.

Why don't the sire and dam have certificates of clearance ?. If you were the breeder would you not have copies of the certificates available to the new purchasers... and proud of it.

I am not saying that these breeders are not breeders of quality dogs. But unless certificates are available how do any of us know.

As we all say no pedigree no proof of parentage, no proof of identification.

I don't think it would unfair to the breeder to ask for an eye clear certificate for that pup before purchase.

If they are in it for the long haul they should be eager to comply.

Because in this breed rarely are they eye tested as pups unless there is an issue.

We have tested at that age simply due to finding out info about our imports lines & making sure we didnt add a problem.

We didnt but the bitch & pups are spayed.

Both parents should have eye clearances but with pups you will find a small handful who do it as the need isnt there.

Thanks for the heads up on the breed.

Maybe I am just a worry wort.

I also have a second breed that can fall prone to eye problems, but can not be tested till at least 5 to 7 years.

But both the dog and bitch that I have are clear through parentage. (thank god)

Sometimes I wonder if ignorance is not bliss. LOL.

Cheers.

Hello

Re: Laila - the schnauzer - and question about schnoodle

To those that raised alarm about Laila and, the administrator that took her off the system:

Her schnauzer - now 10 months - is very happy in our family of 2 young kids, 2 adults, and 1 cat.

He now sleeps in a crate in our bedroom each night

He was desexed at 5 months (hence no breeding)

He gets a 30 min walk every day - sometimes twice a day (and loves visiting the grandparents on their farm every few months)

He has lots of toys to play with and spends countless hours playing each day

He is our first family dog ... and we have learnt much along the way with him

Living in a cold region - we thought he may like a dog buddy (a desexed female) to play and snuggle with - having seen the schnoodle a few times, we simply wondered if a schnoodle would be a good alternative to another schnauzer.

All the best.

So you took the baby puppy that Laila locked in the shed?

And now she wants another puppy?

Sounds like Laila may have been reported and had her DOL account terminated/blocked and then opened up another account and resurrected an old thread of hers to answer our questions about what happened to her Mini Schnauzer and allay our concerns about this pup, given her previous posts about locking this pup in a garden shed etc and starting the thread that has now been removed, enquirng about the schnoodle.

Hi Labsrule

Let's hope if she is genuine :) that she now knows that schnauzers need to be inside dogs with their family, and that she has learnt enough from the forum to care for a baby puppy adequately and keep him/her inside and not locked in a shed.

Let's also hope that she doesn't support puppy farmers and buy a poodle x schnauzer. :)
