Should I Or Shouldn't I?

Being thinking about putting Charlie back into Obedience training. Just something he can do once a week. He went up to Class 3 before he got sick. He can do everything except jumping or running. But, at home, we work on his heeling, his sits, stays, drop etc.

His back isn't 100% (and probably never ever will), but he is getting stronger each day. He goes for 2x 10 minutes walk everyday.

Is that a good idea or bad idea?

I admit, I want to take him to Obedience again for the socialisation side of things for him. He use to really enjoy going.

I think if he enjoys it why not. I guess the only think you would have to watch is other dogs with him. Does your obedience class have free play/off leash socialization? That would be something you would have to keep an eye on if he got into rough play with another dog.

No free play or off leash socialisation. Dogs are allow to sniff each other, but they aren't allow to go off leash (unless training).

Also if he's only going for walks for 10 minutes, would he be up for a full obedience class. If not, is it still worth the money?

Good point!

Ask the obidience club instructor, I know I had to get a vet clearance to take Toby to certain classes due to his pronounced limp he used to have from the broken leg. Plus the liability side of things. You may find you are not welcome at class (Toby wasn't for quite a while).

Maybe if you do get permission to go you could just do part of the lesson if Charlie can't cope.

Good on you for wanting to go though! I know you must miss it-I love training and I am sure I enjoy it at leat as much as Cindy does.

Will have to talk to the club :D

Yeah, I do miss it. Charlie and I always had a great time at obedience (despite him known to be sleeping in class because we do the early morning session  ), I'm just worried that he is getting bored at home. He is getting better, and I feel that he needs to get out more..

If it was too early I'd be asleep as well. If it doesn't work out in class maybe you could arrange to meet with a few friends for some informal training.

Maybe you could arrange to just go down and hang out? That would still be nice for both of you.

I was going to suggest that, and maybe do a little bit of training on the sidelines with Charlie and see how he copes before putting him in a class :D

My dog has Osteo-Arthritis and still really enjoys his Obedience classes, you just have to watch them and know when it's time to take a break or finish up and make sure your instructor understands your dogs limitations as well.
