Elbie, Hoover, Dodge & Friends!

KTB: I love it when photos of working dogs are shown, too often the hard work of dogs goes unnoticed.

Minxy: good photo, surprised to see so many dogs, it would have been too damn hot for me to take echo, he really did not enjoy that day heat wise.

Rav: goregous she looks like she is saying "wooo shiny!"

Echo has finally learned drop on command, my only problem is, his lure drop is instant however his command drop he seems to take 5 seconds to lower himself to a drop. I am not sure how to work on this to increase the speed. I have been trying to encourage echo to use the other shell full of water, so today I spent alot of time relaxing with my feet in it and then making him snorkel for treats in the water, he isnt too keen on it atm lol he blows bubbles trying to sniff the treat

some pics today, he is now 17 weeks, and a little wet as we decided to play "run as fast as you can from the splashing water" he seemed to enjoy it.

Are you sure you want to start a thread.. it might become explosive! (Just as every normal, simple question threads become..)

A battle of the breeds to see who has the better dog with sniffing nose

 Surely my thread is entirely non-contentious. I don't think anyone could do battle about something like SAR dogs/sniffer dogs!

Border collies apparently make great search and rescue dogs which is why I was curious about why there weren't more Kelpies out there, but border collies are more famous internationally.

Some BCs make great SAS dogs  .

I don't think the lack of kelpies being used as SAS dogs is so much a breed thing but due to the fact that kelpies are not a numerous breed outside of Aust, while BC are a numerous dog all over the world. Kennel Club registered BC are only a very small percentage of the BCs worldwide.

Oh KTB! That's a cracker! That little corgi put sooo much effort into the jump and barely missed the wharf!

Rav - I was telling OH about Astrid's presents. It's soooo cute! I have a few of those shots too... but then I get slobbery kisses on my camera lens (thank goodness for lens filters!)

Minxy - Kyojin is looking sooo lovely! He and Kuma would have great rumbles  (was it hot? They all look Exhausted!)

It was BOILING! I'm pretty sure it was the hottest day of summer for us this year. Fortunately they had lots of water bowls everywhere and a few splash pools to keep the dogs cool

Kyliegirl: Lovely photos of Echo. Gosh he's becoming a big boy!!

Echo is so cute! That collar is the same colour as Elbie's puppy collar.

We've had a big day - we finally made our pilgrimage out to see 'K9 Steve' as my OH calls him. We left very early in the morning but because of road works, ridiculous traffic jams, our Darth Vadar GPS misleading us once about getting on the Westlink M7 and then us taking a wrong turn on the very last road and had to go down the hill and come back again ... we ended up there about 15 minutes late!

It was an extremely illuminating and helpful session and we have learned lots of useful insights about Elbie. Hoover was just along for the ride but got some bonus tips, so that was most appreciated :) Elbie isn't broken or weak-nerved despite his anxious face and crazy noises. Contrary to popular opinion, Elbie's crazy hyperactivity isn't due to his crossbreedliness (OMG PTS!), it's a lack of fulfilment of his prey drive and we will be working quite conscientiously to address this. Not surprisingly, it's not Dog Defect, it's more matter of Defective Handler. I'm sure a more competent and experienced handler would have been able to get more out of Elbie - but we're working at it, and we love the little monster. He is a smart cookie and has a lot of potential so we're very hopeful. Steve had Elbie and Hoover loose-leash walking in minutes ... it was a bit gobsmacking.

K9Steve's training field is so great - I was filled with envy. OH liked it, too but only if it came with a gardener

The dogs were very well-behaved! Almost 4 hours in the car on the way up and then almost four hours on the way back. Hoover as usual was an angel in the car. Elbie mewled and whimpered for a lot of the trip there but was quiet and well-behaved for most of the trip back.

Hope all are having a great weekend!

ETA: Elbie's original name when we got him was 'Thor' :D OH remarked that it was just so not the right name for Elbie.

eg. "Behold the mighty Thor!"

Aww Elbie looks so cute!

Great to hear you had a good experience with K9 pro! If i get to keep Mindy i am thinking of taking her there for a session as she has a few minor issues i would like to get sorted, mainly to do with improved reliability because I would like to get involved in some dog sports with her.

How did you get elbie to do the "shy" trick where they put their paw over their muzzle? I remember seeing a video or something of him doing it?

I am struggling with mindy, it is the one trick we don't seem to be able to master (well, i don't seem to be able to teach it to her!). We have gotten to the stage where she will do a very small paw touch on her muzzle but nothing more. Not really sure how to shape/lure a larger movement? I have tried the sticky tape, vegemite on the muzzle etc but she doesn't notice its there

Lots of breeds and mixed breeds (shock-horrpr LOL) are used for SAR worldwide. Aussies are used quite a lot as service dogs in the US, including SAR and guide dogs even!

In NSW the SAR team is mainly labs I think but i am sure any dog with the right drive could be trained.

Most dogs have similar sniffing ability, but it is the trainability, drive and instinct to use their nose that makes the difference I would think (and of course the trainer)

I am not sure if it is one of those things though that have to be started at a young age (dog age that is!)? I think it is very worthwhile volunteer organisation.

Well, we've had an interesting weekend lol. Friday after work my OH bought me a lovely bunch of pink roses, I popped them in a vase and put them on the dining table. Well, neither of us realised it, but apparently they were Evil Roses of Doom and plainly were plotting our horrific destruction. I know this because when Astrid saw them she went MENTAL! Barking and growling and everything! I ended up holding the vase while I rested it on the floor and she came over and poked each individual bloom with her nose before she was satisfied that she could keep them in line. She then trotted away like she was Queen of the World! I told OH she needs more socialisation with bunches of roses :happydance2:

Yesterday morning at obedience I was really wishing she was a bit more food motivated. She was like "Oh, you have chicken liver, cheese, salami, devon and chicken? Well, I find none of those things even as remotely interesting as this dead leaf, or as interesting as the possibility that a cloud may appear if I stare at the sky" I am trying more with toys etc but am having some difficulty timing the play etc so we aren't doing something different to everyone else.

Yesterday she finally discovered that there are fish in the big glass thing she walks past numerous times every day. Imagine her surprise! She spent a good 20 mins with her nose squooshed up against the glass of the tank, following the movements of the fish. They were as interested as she was.

This morning she was running around outside and we heard a loud yelp. Oh no, rush outside and she's holding her foot up in the air looking rather forlorn. After about 5 mins she wasn't limping anymore and it doesn't seem sore to touch but we've cancelled today's after work trip to the beach, just to be on the safe side.

Minxy: Oh, now I get it, Woofstock :D I don't think we really have anything like that here. I hope it improves in years to come for you! Sounds like a good idea, anyway.

kyliegirl: Lovely pics of Echo! I have so much trouble getting good pics, my crappy camera skills combined with Astrid never staying still (especially when the camera is around) make it nearly impossible. I think that about 80% of the pics I have of her she is asleep! Astrid loves the water too, does Echo lay in it when he's hot? :happydance:

KTB: Ohh! I'd love to do some training with K9 Pro. We are considering doing a couple of the distance learning packages with him. I'm very interested in what you say about the prey drive, herding is a modified prey drive I believe? It sounds like you had a really interesting time!

Thor :D

Aussielover: I have trouble with the 'shy' trick too! Astrid just either sits and waits patiently with the tape stuck to her, or immediately flops to the ground and rolls on her back, rubbing it off that way :happydance2:

Lovely photos of Echo. Gosh he's becoming a big boy!!

He is growing so fast, its hard to believe he used to fit in the cat bed a few weeks ago.

Look how much Echo has grown!!!!! I love his collar!
Echo is so cute! That collar is the same colour as Elbie's puppy collar.

Thanks, the collar will soon change to bright blue, he is now growing out of the purple, one notch to go! Thanks for the compliments!

I guess I have a statue dog, he will stand still quite alot to see what we are doing, he seems pretty casual actually, maybe we have just raised him to not be as active? lol! He doesn't like water much, he is like his dad when it comes to water, hates the hose, hates being sprayed, he will tolerate a bath and will tolerate rain and standing in the shell pool but I highly doubt we will ever see him actually lower himself into the pool to cool down, he would rather go somewhere dry to cool off.

Echos walk went well today, I have been taking him further and trying to get him used to ignoring surrounding objects, I have started to cross the road at points I know dogs roam or are not contained, this has worked well as it seems the white dog missy who last time charged and barked at echo will not cross the road so we have been having very nice walks, he also sits and looks at me when we stop and will sit on command when we stop to cross. We have a compliment today, I heard a lady pipe up across the road "Look at that well behaved puppy!" this was right after I stopped and echo instantly turned to sit and look at me  we did approx a 2km walk today, this appears to be sufficient for Echo as he comes home quite content and has a good drink and goes to play with something or take a nap sucking his bed.

Edited so that there is less text ...

aussielover:

How did you get elbie to do the "shy" trick where they put their paw over their muzzle? I remember seeing a video or something of him doing it?

The thread on DOL is here but to be honest, the video that really taught us how to do it was

. Tab and his GSD Solea are just so amazing. You could try bigger loops of sticky tape or find a food that she likes and stick a cube of it on her muzzle with peanut butter/vegemite. It took both Elbie and Hoover a long time but Hoover in particular took a long time. He swiped at the sticky tape perfectly but then without it, he'd just stare at me. Then I'd pretend to stick tape on his face and I'd give him a very light tape on his muzzle where the tape used to be to 'remind' him and then he'd swipe. His first dozen attempts he would tape at the ground or scratch the ground. We'd reward him as encouragement but eventually only rewarded him when he did the proper muzzle cover.

Here is the video of

.

ravenau1:  Astrid reacts to roses the way Elbie reacts to OH's Robo-Panda. Glad you were able to socialise her to it. Elbie is now fine with the Dyson and the electric mixer but Robo Panda still makes him very barky. I hope Astrid's foot is all right! When we first got Hoover, he occasionally yelped in the backyard when he put a paw wrong but he seems more coordinated these days so there's no more yelping.

About 'shy' - there's no reason Astrid can't do 'shy' on her back if she's pawing at her muzzle while on her back. That's quite cute. Our dogs sometimes do 'are you shy' while lying on their side.

*sympathy* Perhaps you could ask the instructor if you can do the demo last so that you have plenty of warning that your turn is coming up  For some of our tasks, we go around the group one by one. With Hoover ... sometimes when it's our turn, he's not ready and still not focused. Then there are other times when we're last and it's hard to keep him settled and focused while all the other dogs are doing their thing. :o By funny contrast, OH and Elbie have been on a dream run for the last two weeks - apparently Elbie has been almost perfect during his training for the last two weeks, much to OH's delight.

As for a session with Steve, I definitely recommend it. I really wanted the in-person consult to satisfy my myself about certain things I had been worried about. You're right that herding is a modified prey drive and it's funny but Elbie appears to have more drive in him that Hoover the purebred Kelpie :)

kyliegirl: You sound like you're doing great work with Echo! As to the water thing, none of my two appear particularly enamoured of water. Probably too reminiscent of bath time ... ;)

OH glanced over and was disapproving of so much text, so some photos ...

Dark photos but when Elbie and Hoover play tug, Hoover lies in the dog bed and holds onto one end of the tug. Elbie grabs the other end and it usually ends up with Elbie towing the dog bed and Hoover into the entrance room

lazysunday01.jpg

We leave the bed there during the day because the dogs love lying there with a view of the street. We get a funny view, too

And for those that don't read other DOL threads, here is the hilariously cute video

Finally - has anyone heard from Niques? She seems to have vanished ...

ETA: Yes those are muddy paw prints you see on the floor. It's been raining and the dogs' paws were muddy. I have since cleaned up the muddy paws. I explain this because in another DOL thread, someone said: "When someone posts a photo of their dog, do you judge them if their house is messy/dirty?????"

Also, posting a "What Am I Doing Wrong?" thread on DOL is just dangerous!!!

KTB: Astrid is fine today. I think that's it, she's just young and all legs and not terribly graceful :) . I have had two people I know in the last few months with dogs with cruciate ligament injuries, I guess I am getting paranoid :)

I must video her while doing the 'shy' training because she looks like a dying cockroach! She doesn't paw at the tape, but she rolls on her back and rubs it off on the floor, if that makes sense? She's a bit weird!

I managed to read your post before you condensed it but didn't have time to reply. But it's motivated me to get off my butt and write K9Pro an email to see if we can do a distance package for a couple of little things. Unfortunately it's not feasible for us to go over there, though I note that there's accommodation available nearby, but I would love to at some stage. I may pm you sometime to ask you some more about your experience if that's ok? :D

I read that thread too, about people judging housekeeping skills by posted pics :) It's never occurred to me to worry about that sort of thing.

I can't seem to see that youtube vid, says it has been moved :o. Love the piccies  snugglie puppies are so cute and I love Hoover's eyebrows!

Kyliegirl:Astrid has two speeds, 'flat out' and 'stop' :) she definitely likes to be busy! Now that's interesting that Echo's father doesn't like the water and neither does he, Astrid's father and mother, and older sister all love the beach and spend a lot of time in the water, I wonder if such a thing can be genetic!

At what age did everyone let their dogs have run of the house at night? Or do you at all? Astrid is 5 months old now and still sleeps in the crate next to the bed. Her toilet training (touch wood) is going really well and there have been no accidents inside since we started teaching her to scratch at the door to go out. Though when I first taught her that I imagined her sitting nicely and giving the door a little scratch, but no. In typical Astrid fashion she flings herself at the door and bashes and scratches at it while standing on her back legs :) then sits nicely when she sees us coming. We've been extra vigilant about not leaving things where she can get them since she started her retrieving stage, so there's nothing she can really get into I guess. I just don't know how to make the transition, perhaps I should try leaving her crate open at night and see? Put another bed in the bedroom or something.

 Better not post too many more pics of my mut then!!! I would just like to point out that the carpets in our house were trashed before we moved in!!!!! (We are in a rental). I'm a neak freak at the best of times, but G hasn't learnt to clean up after herself yet. The OH has been in training for 6 years... I wonder how long it will take her?????

Rav - Genevieve will be 1 in a couple of weeks and I doubt I will ever let her have the run of the house at night!! She still sleeps in the laundry, either in or on her crate :) , with the laundry door closed. During the day while I am at work, she has the laundry and the passage way. We have a child gate in the doorway between the dining room and the passage way, and I shut all the doors except the laundry door. She usually hangs out on her rug, outside our bedroom door. Wouldn't risk it at night time though, because I know she would scratch at our bedroom door and I would want to kill her. For us, she can separate 'bed time' from 'work time' relatively well, and this seems to be working. When she is naughty, we crate her in whatever room we are in (she can still see us and knows she is in trouble as we ignore her). She gets that it means bad dog, jail, sin bin, free to good home... better be a good dog now!

My parents' dog, Aurora is going on 9 and she has the run of the downstairs of their house and has done for about 5 years. This came about after endless other attempts at curving her barking at night. She left us in peace if she was allowed to come and go out of my bedroom (when I lived at home)... Never the whole house though. I think personally, you are setting yourself up for pack issues if you start that. They think they own the joint and as soon as you sit on 'their couch' they let you know it!!! It can be hard to re-claim your space if and when you need to.

 We used to say the same thing about Ava! She was either fast asleep or go, go, go. She has calmed down a lot now. She hasn't been for a walk today but is happily snoozing in her crate. What a good girl...

I don't remember exactly what age... probably around 6 or 7 months I think? She has always been good about not stealing things that aren't hers and since we've left her crate open, she's slept under our bed all night. These days she even lets us sleep in which is nice ;)

We are off to the coast for a few days tomorrow, dogs coming with us. Hopefully the weather clears up a bit. Will be nice just to do nothing for a few days...

ravenau1: Can't wait to see Astrid doing the dying cockroach. Elbie has a dying cockroach, too from the early days of learning how to play dead. While he does a beautifully lengthy and convincing dead now, in the beginning we had:

.

.

.

They were a bit cockroach-like in their delivery and made us laugh sooooooooo hard.

I managed to read your post before you condensed it but didn't have time to reply. But it's motivated me to get off my butt and write K9Pro an email to see if we can do a distance package for a couple of little things. I deleted because I realised there was just way too much text and people would probably be bored bored BORED! Please do feel free to PM me about it – it was really extremely illuminating and I feel like I understand Elbie a lot more now than I did!

At what age did everyone let their dogs have run of the house at night? Or do you at all? Astrid is 5 months old now and still sleeps in the crate next to the bed. Her toilet training (touch wood) is going really well and there have been no accidents inside since we started teaching her to scratch at the door to go out.

We tested it out in stages. For instance, Elbie's crate is in the kitchen so we tried out leaving him with crate door open in the kitchen overnight to see if he wandered. He did not. Then it was the kitchen and study … After that, tender-hearted OH just leaves the crate door open so he can wander at will and he has been fine. We tend not to do it on days we want to sleep in because Elbie will come bounding to the bed and we'll be woken up by a wet-nosed doggie with hopeful looks, licks and seal-ears  We started doing that last month when Elbie was about 11 months. We've accidentally left Hoover's door open, too and deliberately done it a few times and he's now 7 months, almost 8 months now. Both are house-trained now and will head out the dog door when needed. At 5 months, although house-trained - they were both still having the occasional slip-ups (particularly in rooms like the lounge where they don't often go) so it was a bit too early for us to let them have free rein of the house.

Good news, it looks like Edie (the red and tan Kelpie girl) and Rufus (the cute little Heinz puppy) at Singleton Pound may be on the verge of rescue. In the case of Rufus, he is literally being snatched from the jaws of death! I am so relieved because I was feeling quite disheartened - I had found a foster carer for both here in Canberra but couldn't get any of the logistics sorted

wizzle: after much deliberation we have picked the bathroom as the sin bin because it doesn't matter if they end up not liking that room. We used to tether them for 1 minute in the kitchen but that doesn't work because they're still part of the 'pack' and the kitchen is where they hang out. Tethering in the courtyard worked but now we tether them for lamb flaps there so that doesn't work so now it's the bathroom when they're naughty.

wuffles! Good to see you again! Look forward to hearing about how the wedding went and seeing photos – whether here or on FB!!!

Fenster - so cute!!!

Wuffles - a big congratulations! I hope the day went really well! And - enjoy your holiday!

KTB - unfulfilled prey drive = hyperactive crazies? Ha! I thought it was just Max! What sorts of things are you going to do to try and get some fulfillment? For us, its the ball. Making the ball a very serious game, where we give our full attention (not just mindlessly throwing over at the park - but incorporating commands etc etc) - and then by extension flyball. While we use the kong for when we go out, when we're home and he's getting restless I might go out in the backyard wiht him and throw it around - exciting cause of hte different directions it goes. He has to do a complicated routine of commands before we start though! You should see him - pupils dilated, quivering, every sit/stand/drop is instantaneous! Also with the tug. Doing all this seems to work quite well? But then I'm not sure if that's the idea or not. As soon as I say 'are you ready', its on. Training this was an accident, and unfortunately comes up a bit too often in normal conversation!!!!

As to free run of the house - Max has been getting that for months and he's 10 months old. Mind you, he sleeps on our bed, the lucky furball, and isn't inclined to leave it for no good reason! He takes himself off to bed most nights at 10 pm - he doesn't give us any trouble when we try to hop in, so that's the main thing. If he does get up during the night I don't know about it cause I sleep like a log! From time to time if he has to spew up a bit of bone or something, its the OH who knows about it  . During the day if we leave him inside (at the moment we're getting our house restumped and the whole underneath is open now so he could go from backyard-street no worries, plus workmen there all day) - he gets the spare bedroom - he LOVES this - I just put an old sheet on the bed to keep it 'nice', the hall, kitchen and back room. Basically we wouldn't leave him with the 'electronics' - tv, computers etc, just in case. Its been ages since we've had destruct-o dog, touch wood. Though at the moment he's mightily impressed by the big holes the workmen have made and takes every opportunity to drop something in there, much to my chagrin, as I have to get down in the mud and get it out!!!

ETA: I thought of Niques the other day too. Hope all is okay!

This thread will go KABOOM!!!

Always a bad idea to post on DOL when the person about who you are writing can show up and retaliate!

Also, I am not saying I sympathise with the original poster, but threads like this bring all the Hairy Scaries out of the woodwork. The more I read from some registered breeders, the more I go  I can't believe one would be precluded from ever entering the purebreed world simply because one owned a crossbreed. What if the crossbreed was rescued or inherited?

I'm not sure what to think!

I know when I first came here I was a little intimidated by all those opinions, but I filter out stuff and find what's relevant to me.

Some people are just so naive and they get burned in a big way

He is so cute! I said he looked like a mini koala bear (the real kind, not the me kind). OH said he looked like a mini-ewok  I've never seen a Schnauzer Puppy before. Gosh I wish I lived near a breeder so that I could play with puppies on a regular basis

The pics of Hoover and Elbie are so cute KTB.

Thank you! They are cute but they can be Monsters

The thing about that thread is that while the original poster comes across as being a little naive and imprudent, a lot of the breeders replying just seem a little intolerant and unkind. All are diminished ...

Max#1: We're actually working on suppressing his prey drive right now .. once he's calmer then we'll look to reigniting it in a controlled way and hopefully directing it towards his training.

We have been working on amping up the value of the Pack so today OH spent time in the study but closed the kitchen doors so that the doggies could have access to the backyard and the kitchen but not to him. As far as he could see, they chose to snooze the day away in their dog beds in the kitchen. Too funny. We went to the local oval today - I walked Elbie there and OH walked Hoover, then once we got there we swapped dogs and worked on recall with long leashes. Hoover comes bounding back with the goofiest look of enthusiasm on his face. It's very comical.

Yep, I think it might have already gone kaboom, the poster has removed any posts she has made.

I always wonder why people bother doing that in threads like that when some DOLers make a point of quoting back the entire post just so that the original poster can't go back and delete posts ... :scold:

As to the withholding water post ... I would never post in that thread but Elbie and Hoover drink and drink as much as they like until we go to bed - anywhere between 11pm to midnight. They're taken outside to be wee'd and then zipped into their respective crates. They're soft crates so we do not put water in the crates. They emerge from the crates at around 7.30am on weekdays and are wee'd then. I don't really consider it denying them water because they are asleep all night. When Elbie was very young and we were housetraining him, we used to reduce his water intake at around 8pm i.e. just put a bit of water in his bowl. OH is very tender-hearted so he would usually let Elbie have as much water as he wanted and even Hard-Hearted me would give Elbie a bit of water when I wee'd him at 3am ;)

ETA:

I have 4 more rescue videos to make. 2 of them are of dogs here in Canberra and OH and I visited them on Sunday to take photos and video. I haven't started making the videos yet - just sifting through them but I found some rather gorgeous footage of Ginger - a happy, exuberant little whirlwind of a doggy who just loved being around people. See
