Are There Any Fenced Off-leash Areas In Melbourne?

Hi, we have a new rescue labrador, he's been with us three weeks and we're spending a lot of time trying to bring him up to scratch with training etc. He's perfect at many commands and rubbish at others! He was a stray so we don't know his history at all but he has obviously had some basic training.

We daren't let him off the leash yet as he is very choosy about coming when called. We have him on a long rope on the beach which works well but it's nothing like being off-leash for us or him! He's very good at coming back if there's not much else to distract him but if there's a good scent to follow or another dog around I could wave a fillet steak under his nose and he wouldn't come

I was wondering if anyone knew of a fenced off-leash place anywhere in SE Melbourne that we could let him off leash without fear of him not returning?

Thanks for any advice

JB

If he won't come back when he's called JB, I'd argue its a bit early to be letting him loose in an offlead dog park if it has any other users.

What's he like with other dogs?

KCC.

There is also a fenced beach (Sandowne St near Brighton) but it is very, very popular and I wouldn't go there without having 100% control over my dog.

Thank you!

Excuse my ignorance - what is KCC?

JB

KCC Park is the home of Dogs Victoria. IT's great there!

Hey JB :D

What part of SE Melb are you?

There is an off lead fenced oval near us in East Bentleigh. I dont know what its called but its right next to the velodrome.

Let me know if it would suit and Ill check out the name of it on our walk tomorrow :)

Hi, we're in Mordialloc, not a million miles away. Thanks for that.

He's great with other dogs - he just wants to play and we all get tangled up in the 25m longline! One of the reasons I want to try him in an offlead dog park is to test his recall off the lead but in a safe environment where he can't run away - he comes about 80% of the time on the long line.

In the info about KCC park it mentions a couple of times it is for members. If you dont have a pure breed dog how do you become a member and is this necessary to use the off lead facility?

You can join as a member and register your dog as an Associate. Given that VicDogs members are paying for the facility, it seems only reasonable that if you want to use it you become one.

Thanks Poodlefan, I certainly dont mind paying a membership to use the faciities. Do you know what the best time to go is.

Also for the original poster there is a small, size of a house block, fully fenced off lead area with lovely garden seats, trees, grass etc a couple of streets behind the Cranbourne shopping centre. I dont know the actual address but if you leave the shopping at the rear go about 2 blocks it is on the corner. It only has fencing to about waist height, chain link, but is a nice area that is not too big so your dog is not too far from you even if the recall is not so flash.

Thank you everyone for the advice. Lots of places to consider - great!

As a pet owner, I joined the Companion Dog Club, part of Dogs Victoria. It was $25 for the family and all your dogs, and allows you to use KCC Park. There are also occasional group dog walks at various locations which are fun.

The other place is off Fox Road in narre - off narre north road

There is 2 off lead areas that are fenced.

you can take your dog there and not have other dogs in the run at the same time

Ooo I never knew that, Thanks Flaves!

Anyone is welcome to use BODCs off leash areas when the club isn't training (we train Saturday arvo) but I would warn you they are very, very, very, very etc muddy at the moment, take your waders! The word quagmire springs to mind.

KCC is also very muddy at the moment - we train there on Sunday mornings and after the dogs have their after-training play they really need a bath (dirty, very smelly mud)!!

Weekends can sometimes be pretty busy there with shows / trials / other events / training etc, but even so you can usually get a go in one of the enclosed areas (some events held there mean that the main areas are unavailable to the public eg: herding trials etc). If you check the events page on the website you can get a bit of an idea what is on down there. I have only been there once during the week and it was quiet.

If you're interested in training try Bayside Companion Dog Training School www.baysidedogs.org.au. It's a not for profit organisation run by a wonderful bloke called Terry Lack and his volunteer helpers. They meet twice a week at Hodgson Reserve, Higgins Road, Bentleigh on Thursday's 10:15 and Sunday's 9:15. There's lots of dogs for socialisation and training.
