Dog Training Wa

Hi there,

Has anyone been to or heard feedback of Northern Suburbs Training & Obedience Dog Club in Perth, WA? They seem to have a solid program, good times (Sunday morning suits me), use positive reinforcement etc and it only costs 60 or 80 for a year (so long as we volunteer at one event or something). I can go to as many classes as I want.

I was wondering if anyone has any more information than what I can gather from them directly and their website.

I'm sure a lot of people have loved their experience there but I didn't like the club at all. My best friend and I took our dogs and were in different levels but both encountered rude instructors and thought we were overlooked in the large groups. I was given a hard time by one instructor for naming my dog Sarge. She said it was an awful name for a cute little dog. I was only 14 so it upset me. Other people in the group called her the Nazi but when I went up a level I found out there were quite a few instructors given that name.

This was 5yrs ago though so there may be all new trainers who actually like working with people now.

I emailed them a few weeks ago and received a rather blunt reply back.

I'm not surprised. I remember going to the sign up tent thing on the first day and the people there were very rude and seemed very much like it was the last place on earth they wanted to be. Maybe they all got a bad nights sleep or something.

Hmmm well this isn't sounding totally promising. I'll still consider it since I'm on a budget, but while we're all here...

Where did you Perth people take your pets for training then? I live in North Perth - so fairly central. Any good reputations, what about the ones that VetWest run?

HI,

I took my Lakeland to puppy class and then into Level 1 at Northern Suburbs.

The instructor who took puppy class was a little gruff but I was very happy with the way she ran the class. The classes are unfortunately quite large at times but in general I think it's a good club.

Unfortunately my girl isn't particularly food motivated when there's other dogs around and the instructors didn't seem to have any suggestions other than 'you need to use bacon/sausage/liver etc' (believe me I've tried them all!).

Why don't you ask them if you can go to observe one morning then you can see how you feel about it?

I once got spoken to harshly because I wasn't using any greasy/fatty for treats in my training class. My Belgian has a sensitive tummy to too much fat but they didn't care. I used what they made me use and wowee, she stunk my room out that night.

Now my two aren't trained with food, just positive training.

For our next puppy we will definately be going to Train a Pup Time after all the recommendations it has had.

We took our crazy GSP to Perth Obedience Club and learn a lot from Denise and Margaret. they tought us novice dog handlers a lot and put up with Leila's craziness. Denise is firm, but fair.

Guys I have been going to that club for 2 years and NO ONE has ever ever been rude to me!!! In fact when I was struggling with my lab when he was younger instructors took time out to meet with me extra days a week at no extra cost to help me out!!!

We meet on a sunday morning at 08h00 for junior classes and at 9h30 for trialling classes on a sunday morning. I was very happy with puppy school, Bernice is in charge of puppies and has had about 25years+ experience instructing. Gina O Keefe is in charge of training the instructors and I am sure if you google her you will be able to see she is a very clued up and often travels overseas to the latest seminars etc.

I would like to know the names of the people who were rude to you, please PM me.

Thats odd as I remember the instructors always telling us to use toys as a reward - and unlucky for me my lab would rather have food!!

Some Vetwest instructors are better than others (they do puppy preschool). Ask for the class that Helen runs, I think she still does them at Whitfords. I used to do puppy classes for them, but I'm having a break to be a mummy :) Helen would be my first choice. She has a strong interest in training & behaviour, rather than just being a vet nurse who does classes for extra cash, or because they like cuddling puppies

I've never trained at Northern Suburbs, but have had dealings with the instructors there, who bent over backwards to be helpful....most impressed.

Chicko used to go there too, with her Leonberger, give her a PM ;)

Well great! I think I'm gonna go to Northern Suburbs anyway cause it's cheap and it gives me regular training with my dog througout the year/s (so he'll forever be a good dog - with my training at home too of course).

But thanks to your suggestions I've contacted Carolyn and enrolled into her classes starting this Sunday! After all the first training sessions and puppy class/socialisation is the most important! I'm well and truly out of pocket but oh well. This will be my baby

Thanks for your suggestions guys, and I'll post up what I think of the classes after I start.

P.S. Carolyn was VERY nice and attentive with her emails and the information she was providing as well as trying to get me into the class I wanted. That's what convinced me to fork out that extra money to go with her. Someone who seems to go above and beyond what's considered 'necessary' must be someone who'll do the same in her classes. I'm a big fan already!

Thanks guys

we took ours there for several months - our younger dog did his puppy training there. After 3-4 months it no longer fit with our schedule so we left. We got some useful training tips there and enjoyed it for the time we were there. It was cheap and cheerful and what we expected for the price etc. I would recommend them
