MsKatie Posted March 8, 2011 Share Posted March 8, 2011 (edited) Hi all I have a friend who came to me this morning about a dog for her family - hubby has said they can get a dog BUT it can only be an Amstaff or a SBT Update - now looking at SBTs Bit of family info - 3 kids - one of 14 (who has Aspergers) - one of 12 and 1 of 11 - will be a first dog for the family - Mum works school hours as an SSO - Dad works full time as a contractor but it will be Mum doing most of the dog stuff. They are aware of the need to socialise and train a pup and are looking at puppy preschool and obedience training. Mum had a bit of a negative experience with a BYB Staffy x but has met my 2 dogs without issue and is very keen to get a well balanced, well bred pup which will fit in well with her family. We have spoken at great length about the needs of a pup - particularly one of these breeds - and also the wonderful qualities they have. They have a well secured yard and will have the dog desexed and microchipped - I believe - with a supportive breeder and well chosen pup this could be a great addition to their family. She told her OH that she was going to do NOTHING until she spoke to me - she is very happy for me to post this info and print out the replies for her and OH and would really like to be able to contact ethical breeders of Amstaffs or SBTs - would love to meet local ones but is also willing to look interstate. We discussed rescue but she would really like a good knowledge of background and temperament. So - I put it out to DOLers - can you guys help me to help her find the right dog for their family ETA - have looked through the DOL puppy listings and will give her that info too - I did speak to her about looking out for breeders who bred purely for colour (ones with 'blue' in the kennel name) and also ones who charged according to colour Edited March 9, 2011 by KelpieHoundMum Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mrs Rusty Bucket Posted March 8, 2011 Share Posted March 8, 2011 yes and if the stick is not at least 3 metres long and weighs about the same as the dog, it's not interesting enough to play with... reply came back with this one which is listed with dogs sa (where I got the contact details) but not the SBT club - I guess the $20 for a listing there isn't worth while to them but there are a few staffies in the christmas photos that look like my brother's dog ie the tan ones. And she did win a fast food eating contest but not recently. She's about 9 or 10 yo now. That type of thinking went out half a century ago. What happened to equality and an equal partnership in a marriage ? If the wife is going to be the main carer of the dog, the choice of breed should be up to her. Although hubby is saying either one or the other I think maybe more research is needed to find a breed that everyone is happy with and that is going to suit their lifestyle. Definitely approach breeders to have a look at and interact with the adult dogs. All well and good getting a cute puppy but you need to be aware of what that puppy is going to grow into and what needs it is going to have. MsKatie Posted March 9, 2011 Author Share Posted March 9, 2011 Thanks everyone for the help - have def become more inclined towards the SBT - nothing against the Amstaff at all but just thinking about the fit with the family - thanks particularly those who took the time to PM me - we are planning to go to some shows too and she is looking to talk to some breeders to ensure the right thing is done - this is NOT a decision that will be entered into lightly.
