Not everyone can afford a stud fee straight up ... and who wants to hand over a form without payment ?? I have a "friend" who has a written contract that has a clause in it ... "I .... acknowledge that the signed stud form has been handed to me the owner of the bitch. I have handed to form back to .... to hold until final payment is made". When the pups were born the stud owner asked if we could change to a puppy instead of payment which I was fine with.If I ever let my dog out for stud I would expect payment between pups birth and selling the first pup. I wouldn't feel right taking a stud fee with no pups resulting unless I was positive my boy wasn't the cause for no pups. In saying that I don't think I would allow my dog to be used with the same bitch as I would expect the same result so a waste of time but a different bitch owned by the same people would be fine. There are so many reasons why a bitch may or may not have taken, reabsorbs or aborts. That is why there are also fertility specialists. I think before classing it a waste of time, I would possibly give it another go with progesterone testing and possible AI depending on the circumstances. I know of bitches aborting a whole litter when there has been out of the ordinary hot weather. I know of other bitches who have stressed and not taken etc. I also know of some dogs who can only do AI. I know with horses, you pay for a service. If nothing happens, too bad so sad. Some will offer a return. Depending on the circumstances, the bitch owner can be just as much out of pocket and wasted their time as well through no fault of anyone - dog or human. Personally I think there needs to be some give and take and a good understanding of what is to happen between both. In my breed, there are not that few studs where you can easily say "bugger off find someone else" if one party is unreasonable. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Way to over eager and excitable, and the second you try to "help" him he stops lol. And all the people I know in the breed have plenty of their own studs so I probably won't ever have to worry about it, well for a long time anyway. I guess it could also depend if there was the promise of a pup in lieu of a service fee... then payment might come after the decision that there is nothing you want or visa versa. We have not had one bitch not take - touch wood. I am currently acquiring semen and the owners of one dog have stated that they would like a bitch from the litter instead of stud fee - thats fine by me but the bitch the semen is for is only 7 months old - so I am offering stud fee which they can hold for the time if they like and return it when pup ava. I just would not feel right doing it any other way and having them wait up to 2yrs just feels wrong - I want to have the semen collected now due to the age of the dog so that cannot wait for her to grow up. I guess different things work for everyone dependant on the circumstances and as long as both parties are happy and its fair on all concerned it doesn't really matter. I dont take payment until there are pups on the ground, and even then I prefer to work on a barter system, and will often take a stud back in lieu. I wont use a dog if I cannot pay at the time of first sale of puppies. I just dont have that sort of money on hand most of the time. I always ask first though, never assume.
