Dog Walking Protocol

Hi

I am able to take my puppy out from Monday for walks. I can't wait

However, I'm wondering (as I've never had a dog before) if someone can point out some helpful hints and tips for dog walking protocol - my puppy starts puppy preschool the week after next and i'm hoping to learn lots about dog socialisation etc then, but in the meantime, what should i do when we see another dog? Let Jarvis go up to them? Ask the owner first?

I've read lots of posts about people saying other people are rude, their dogs are bothered by other dogs etc, so are there any hard and fast rules so that my introduction to the dog walking world goes smoothly and I don't annoy any of my fellow dog people?!

Thanks in advance... :thanks:

Sarah

I want my dog to be able to walk calmly past other dogs on walks. If you want to allow your pup to say hi to another dog, ask the owner first, don't get offended if they say no as their dog may not like visiting other dogs or puppies. Don't allow your pup to pull you over to other dogs, straining on the leash, even if the owner says it is OK to say hi.

I let zorro say hi as it is good for them to learn but just ask first if they wouldn't mind letting your dog say hallo to their dog but if you have a cute cocker trust me they will most likely stop and ask you  just mix it up walk past some dogs and when he meets a dig just keel it calm if you can zorro met a new lab yesterday he jumped and ran before I knew what was happening he was at the end of the lead and his head and neck stopped and his back legs kept going he went up in the air and fell on his back it was so funny the way he did it but not good for his back. So just keep it calm

I think that puppies should be allowed to greet dogs on walks. I think it is natural for them and helps them learn to differentiate between dogs that are friendly and dogs that are not. Most puppies I have known have grown out of the desperate need to greet every dog they lay eyes on.

If you're just walking the pup for the first time, meaning just finished jabs, you'll probably have enough on your mind and be taking short enough walks that greeting protocols shouldn't be a big issue. Eg, many pups fight the leash and you may need patience or suggestions to even get the pup walking properly. You'll get opinions every which way about what's right with respects to greeting other dogs. It depends on what sort of pup you have, what sort of dog you want, and what sort of dogs you're likely to run into.

Great you're going to puppy pre-school. Bring the question up there and you should get some tips about how to set up positive encounters and how to keep encounters positive.

I think Sandgrubber's got it right. You will get a lot of different opinions here, and it's up to you to decide on what you want to be doing.

Most people love puppies :D

However, i think regardless of what happens, it should happen on your terms, ie, the puppy is only allowed to meet and greet another canine/person if you allow him to. If he's pulling on the lead and drags you over to his goal this could spell disaster, that said he will still be young and they are very curious :D

Depends on what you want out of your dog.

Always ask first, regardless of whether it is out walking, at training or in a dog park. Not all dogs are friendly, not all owners appreciate it either.

ETA, ask from a distance - not when your dog is bouncing around at the end of the leash in the other dogs face.

I wouldn't go out of my way to introduce pup to other dogs. For the first few walks I think it's good to keep pup calm and keep the walk short as it can be quite overwhelming for them, when Lili was little she was terrified of cars/bikes etc.

When we walk ours we generally keep them away from other dogs unless we get talking, then we let them have a sniff.

Have fun!! :D

How old is your pup Jarvis?

Just ask people before you get to them - I find everyone is polite enough and will respect that you've asked - if for whatever reason they say no it's good focus training.

btw in your excitement be careful not to over do it with the pup - 5mins walk for every month of age.
