Dogs To Usa And Back To Oz?

Knew it would be thousands, but $10K+ bit more than expected.

For a 12 month trip, might need to reconsider :(

30 days quarantine better than I expected.

Didn't want to put the dogs thru 6 months quarantine at the end of only a 12 month trip.

Food for thought ... thanks!

eta: Yikes, quarantine for 30 days alone will be ~$1900

The fees are all on the AQIS site including an estimated total cost. 2 dogs at eastern Creek would be $2400. Then just get some quotes for the transport before making a decision.

How does it work out to $10,000???

The flights there & back .

Crates

Vet fee

import/export permits

tests

2 dogs

1 26 kg

1 7 kg

It doesn't take long to add up

For us to bring in a 7 kg dog form Belgium all up was just under $5000 one way .Prices have gone up since then.

Even to send a dog to NZ your looking at the $1000 mark no quarantine .(well for our little dogs )

Large dogs cost more ,not all airlines take dogs ,some have found the odd airline that did excess baggage but not sure if that option is available now .

It use to be great you could take them as Excess on United straight in to the US but can no longer do that so it goes through a shipping agent .

Prices can vary big time.

I pay for excess to fly my dogs there & back internally just under a $1000 to Melbourne, large dogs ,if they where freight well god knows i would be driving

By the time you are returning, the quarantine stay will be less providing you have done the Rabies RNATT testing more that 180 days before they come. The airline fees are high as live animals coming into Oz are flown as Cargo. No excess baggage option etc. They are freight.

There is currently a review in regards to reducing quarantine time down to maybe 12 days but it just means all the testing and paperwork needs to be done well in advance.

Flights are charged on weight.

Then there is shippers fees, blood testing, vet checks, Permit fees, other AQIS fees where applicable.

Do you have any link to this? Would be intersting to learn more about it.

For dogs less than 6 months away from Australia:

Minimum Quarantine stay is 30 days even if the dog only went to the USA for 2-3 weeks, allowing for allowable exemptions (period of residency) of importation requirements conditions (stipulated prior to export) and meeting conditions of export requirements whilst away and providing documentary evidence when applying for reimportation.

Note: Conditions for re-entry do vary between entire dogs and non-entire dogs due to possibility of STIs.

For dogs having left Australia more than 6 months ago:

They must satisfy the importation residency requirements in order to be eligible to re-enter Australia.

Once a dog leaves Australia it is not an automatic given that they can re-enter, they must meet the requirements as stipulated by AQIS. If you contact AQIS prior to export and maintain the stipulated requirements then dogs are normally allowed to re-enter. Documentary proof is necessary.

No further reductions (less than 30 days) have been allowed for at this point in time, it may have been discussed but minimum stay in Quarantine is still 30 days as long as the dog/s concerned meet the other requirements. If they don't meet these requirements quarantine stay could be as long as 180 days.

Dogs travelling internationally travel as manifested cargo, no excess baggage rates. Customs clearance can be undertaken in LAX and then transfer to domestic airlines, where allowable baggage allowance may be claimable (subject to airline).

Rates for internal travel within USA are comparable with Australian rates. International airline rates normally work on set rates per (volume)kg, ie under 45 kg, 45-less than 100kg, 100kg + and so on. (Volume rates are based on dimension of crates versues actual weight and you are charge the greater). By having two dogs travelling they can be consolidated (total weights added together) on one Air Way Bill, saving you some money. Each dog will travel in their own crate. As for pricing the more that you can undertake the cheaper the overall price you should be able to achieve.
