MsDani Posted August 8, 2012 Author Share Posted August 8, 2012 I gave him the valium last night, he was staggering about - I could have cried, but he looked so happy at the same time. Then this morning he was just laying in his bed, vacant eye'd Just have to keep on telling myself, it's only for 5 days... kayla1 Posted August 8, 2012 Share Posted August 8, 2012 My older boy was diagnosed with a major disc collapse (L2/L3) and one of his symptoms earlier on was pacing at night, though he also had discospondylitis which made things worse. He won't eat, but is drinking, he also won't really look up at you. The vet called me yesterday to see how he was and asked if I could 'test' the area in his back to see if he was reacting (both on and off valium), you could see the muscle tense up, but no 'warning' from him. He still gets the drunk look about 20 mins after having it and then becomes extremely hungry, he also will look up at you. So I don't know. I will give him the 5 days like the vet said and take him back. I think I will just go ahead and get them to do an Xray to see what is really going on in there. Your vet must have reasons for holding off on xrays, but when my dogs presented with back pain they were xrayed immediately (after a physical examination) so we knew what the issue was. ash1 Posted August 10, 2012 Share Posted August 10, 2012 Not so much to do with your current situation, but just thought I'd mention that you can give your doggie cartrophen more frequently than twice a year. Our GS has monthly cartrophen injections (he is eight and has hip dysplasia). The cartrophen helps enormously, we can certainly see the difference from the start of the month to the end. FTA - he had blood in his stools on Saturday, thankfully I had the vet appointment that day. They think, because of the meds he's on, the chicken necks are irritating his stomach. MsDani Posted August 15, 2012 Author Share Posted August 15, 2012 Had to rush him to the Vets early this morning Xray's showed no tumour or herniated disc (but she did warn me that the xray may not show that) in the spine, so we stopped the Valium and Pain meds and come home with a Carafate (sp*) so I could give him that before he ate as he still had a bit of diarrhea. He ate that night, not alot, then last night he wasn't really interested in food. Then this morning, when I took him out for his morning toilet break, I thought he had really bad diarrhea, but when I looked it was blood. cavNrott Posted August 15, 2012 Share Posted August 15, 2012 (edited) MsDani, why not have a myelogram done on your dog. That will show up any spinal irregularities. My boy ruptured a disk in his spine, was xrayed and we went straight to the canine neuro specialist who did a myelogram. This pinpointed the area of concern and he had immediate surgery. I'm smack bang in the middle of Fertility Treatment, so I'm extremely hormonal and the tears are just falling... I got him as a puppy when I was first struggling to have a baby. I have recently had my firstborn puppy, Dennys Dog in at the emergency specialist center.. he is getting quite elderly now as well... i love old dogs but wish they did noit worry us so much. keep strong.. He's in overnight so they can monitor him and do a repeat bloood test to make sure the bleeding has stopped. (he's had no more bleeding since the morning). Sorry I didn't take all of it in as I had a massive headache. If he is still showing bleeding in the morning, they'll have to stop it and Something about Blood transfusion. When i spoke to them, he still had a little bit of pain in his tummy, but he was comfortable. I'll talk to them tomorrow morning and, if he's strong enough, ask them to do an endoscope just to make sure it's an Ulcer and not something really nasty. Fingers crossed for my little one. But I was allowed to take him outside for awhile, where he had a bowel movement which had a little bit of blood in it, but it wasn't diarrhea, so it's firming up. Also he ate the boiled chicken I bought him. Still very quiet. How hard is it to leave when they have to stay! But hopefully this afternoon, after the results, I'll be able to bring him home.
