From Victoria To Kangaroo Island

Travelling from Geelong with a few stops along the way to Kangaroo Island on Sunday 23rd Sep.

Is there anything we should know that could affect our dogs. On board will be 2 Rotti's, 1 Aussie shepherd, a tiny terrier who doesn't look like he should and a malt shitzu.

All have been wormed, vaccinated and flea treatment.

The dogs haven't been tested for heart worm but we have a supply of heart worm tablets just in case.

Are there ticks on our way over to KI. Should we be checking our dogs daily?

Looking forward to reading the replies

Any information will be gratefully received.

just in case ? Unfortunately it doesn't work as easily as that :o

if you give your dog heartworm preventative tablets and they have NOT been tested ... it could end badly :( There is a risk of severe side effects because of worms already in the bloodstream ..and also any adult worms in the heart are not killed as are the tiny microfilariae.

Please contact your vet before doing anything.

Oh- you're going on Sunday . ....

Snakes are out in SA - so be careful about letting dogs go where there are snakes.

There are quite a few native animals that get upset by dogs - along the coast and on KI so it's dogs on lead most places. In SA the default is dogs on lead unless there is a sign saying otherwise.

There are bush ticks - but they probably won't kill a dog.

And the "dog park" at Coomandook is about 3m x 3m, with a 3' tin fence, full of long grass and ants. Don't bother walking under the railway to find it.

I just looked up where had footy ovals and did a couple of laps around those and cleaned up after if necessary. More than the locals and the ducks seemed to do.

Travelling over on the huge car ferry to KI dogs will be locked in car for trip or can be taken on lead up to top deck which is absolutely FREEZING cold and often blowing a gale and if raining you will get wet!, passengers must get out of cars and go on ferry and driver only takes car on board and then can go up stairs, so be prepared for this one with that many dogs on board! It takes around 2houras to drive down to Cape Jervis where ferry departs from as it is right at bottom of penninsula from Adelaide central.

Most of KI is national park Dogs prohibited from entering same. But there are area's where you can take dogs watch the beaches as some of them are resting places for giant sea lions who are not friendly to animals or humans. Lots of wildlife on the Island which is of course protected. Also lots of wildlife rangers who enforce protection :)

Heaps to see and do we did not even have enough time in a week, you will be restriced by so many dogs though as many of the wonderful sightseeing (Remarkable rocks/several lighthouse tours/zoo/sand dune escape/American River township cafe's etc/ Admiralty arch and nesting seal colony) are all in national parks. there is a boarding facility on the Island - http://ki-kennels.com.au/ though limited in capacity.

also unless you are camping here is http://www.tourkangarooisland.com.au/lib/docs/mf2014.pdf some places that offers dog friendly accomodation. Some are quite expensive :(

No pre requisits for vetting etc are required.http://www.kangarooislandvet.com/ just in case you do need the services.

Safe travels and enjoy :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi there. I want to thank you all for answering my query regarding our dogs while on Kangaroo Island. We had a wonderful time, saw lots of animals, visited all the tourist spots, the house in American River was perfect and the ice cream at the Honey shop was to die for.

No flies, wasn't bitten by mosquitoes wow what a holiday.

Thanks once again

Wendy and the furry friends
