A friend of mine has placed a deposit on a 2.1/2 week old puppy the breeder then infomed her she is going to try to get the puppies vaccinated at 3 weeks as she normally gets them done at 4 weeks, i understand the maternal anti bodies and age specifics to ensure full protection .. but is it dangerous ? should my friend put her foot down and get vac done when she picks pup up at 6 weeks? thanks

Tell your friend to walk away now.

whoever this pup is being purchased from does not sound at all like any ethical registered breeder I know of (or perhaps no one who knows dogs )

.and your friend is possibly spending good money on lots of heartache.

Please tell them to not fund this person's mismanagement ....

6 weeks????...puppies should still be with their littermates/mother.

What sort of pup ? perhaps someone on D O L can help source one from somewhere reputable ?

Yes, it can be dangerous.

It is also TOTALLY ineffective on a pup still under the effects of disease antibodies passed down from the mother.

I'd run a mile from any "breeder" advocating this.

And FYI no decent breeder rehomes 6 week old pups. What breed are we talking about?

ETA: No decent vet is going to agree with this anyway.

Tell your friend that an unpapered Stafford pup in a state with Breed Specific Legislation is a dog at risk. No responsible registered breeder would rehome a pup at that age.

Can't think of a worse start in life for a dog that needs careful socialisation to end up a decent pet.

Your friend should NOT be taking on a pup that is not vaccinated. Even she will constitute a risk to the pup and its now high into parvo season.

This is really poor decision making by your friend.

Yes could be dangerous, deadly even. Or completely ineffective. And also against the legal labelling specifications of dog vaccines.

Yes i thought it would be ineffective but couldn't find info online about possible dangers, i'l suggest she get it done when she picks pup up. thnx

ARRRRRGH!!

A completely unvaccinated pup out in the world with no immunity to parvovirus? Think about it for a minute. This is a disease spread by everything from shoes to walking on infected ground.

That pup shouldn't be going ANYWHERE without its first vaccinations.

Does your friend actually want her pup to LIVE???

biglib....

not having a go at you or your friend...

this person selling puppies-

(no such breed as English Staffy- they are Staffordshire Bull Terriers ,

if they care so little for the pups' welfare that they

vaccinate at 3/4 weeks

send pups home at 6 weeks ..

then I would not think they have done any health checks for problems which may be passed down the generations ....

I would also bet that pups are weaned way too early, and on cheap food....which is false economy.

and I would bet, if your friend ends up with a sick/dead puppy after a couple of weeks ...these puppy sellers will not be at her side to cry with her , and help cover costs.

Perhaps you could read this ...and share some of the story ? I would hate to read a post later on in a similar vein.

Oh..an AMSTAFF ....... OK.

have you read about BSL?

Have you heard stories of councils taking dogs who look like pitbulls ..and have no proof of the fact they are any other breed ? ie: pedigree papers from a registered breeder....

Having an AMSTAFF from such an ignorant breeder ...with probably no pedigree papers , or even temperament testing does not bode well for this pup's future :(

get your friend to do a bit more research before she picks pup up ...

losing a loved pup/dog is on the cards ..:(

is it a blue staffy? ....................

No a fawn english staffy

Sorry american staffy

Even more like a Pitbull. Does your friend understand what falling foul of Breed Specific Legislation could mean for her pup?

If not, she needs a crash course.

Yes, a young pup shouldn't be going anywhere - but very very few if any pups will actually have a sufficient immune responce following first vaccination at 6-8 weeks to protect them against parvo. Any immunity they have at this age is from maternal antibodies.

Very few pups will have low enough maternal antibodies to respond to vaccination this early, and that is why we vaccinate them. But for the majority of pups coming from vaccinated mothers, it is essentially useless.

Pups should be kept isolated essentially until at least 10 days following their second vaccination (given they are using a vaccine which is registered to finish at this age) to try and protect them from catching parvo.

I work in a high parvo area, we see cases in pups with a 6-8 week vaccination almost on a weekly basis.

Of course she wants pup to live, all we want to know are the dangers if any of having a 3 week old puppy vaccinated, pup has papers, breeder said her vet normally vaccinates at 4 weeks but is going to ask for them to be done at 3 weeks...i have no idea why.

The dangers of having a three week old pup vaccinated are that it will die OR the vaccination will be completely ineffective.

If your friend takes that pup and it isn't vaccinated the effect will be the same - the pup will have no protection from a number of potentially lethal diseases.

I sincerely doubt that this pup has pedigree papers and if it does then the seller is in breach of the ANKC code of ethics and I'm pretty sure at least one or two NSW laws.

Does that sound like a responsible breeder to you?

Tell your friend to see the pedigree papers for both parents AND evidence of the breeders registration with Dogs NSW. I doubt both dogs will be on Main Register and that a current prefix is held.

I think there is every chance your friend is being told a bunch of porkies.
