The porblem with a weak patella is that the cruciate can then go too. Double whammy.

It can be a problem Clyde but the suggestion and information I was presented by the specialist when I asked that exact question wasn't enough for a grade 2 be considered for surgery unless it was impacting the dog.

Thank all. It is her patella as I thought but only in her right leg at present and they're happy to monitor but she'll most likely need surgery in the next few months. It's not as costly as I thought thankfully but I'll definitely look into the Chiro option in the interim also :)

He didnt say but I'm guessing a 2 (from what I've read). She is only mildly displaying signs (does a little skip/limp on that leg every now and again) and doesn't seem phased by it. Apparently $1200-1500 to fix which I thought was ok actually.

Might only be a 1 if she isn't overly phased by it. If its only the occasional skip I wouldn't be in any hurry for surgery.

Our girl has had the surgery on one leg with good results. The insurance covered a lot of the cost so it might be worth asking if she does need the surgery. The recovery was the hardest part (as usual). We found physio and hydrotherapy very good afterwards once the initial healing was done, let me know if you want me to pm you the details.

I'm not in a hurry just yet as she is still jumping on hind legs and rubbing, it's hasn't phased her too much but don't want to get it to the painful stage ir too far if that's possible.

I have only just seen this reading through I thought Patella then read that it is Lacey has just been diagnosed with a Grade 4 , off to the Specialist tomorrow ....... she doesn't even have a groove where the knee joint sits so its a matter of when and how.

Oh nooo, poor Lacey! Keep us updated with how you go with the Specialist. Poor darling. The hardest bit for me would be keeping Bon quiet, she was literally up and running around the afternoon of her desexing.

Thanks Aussie. This little mite is going to be the $10k dog before she hits 2 years old lol. I'm confident she'd handle the surgery well I just feel bad for yet more anesthetic on her tiny body.

Totally late to the party, but...

Scooter had a patella op as I'm sure you remember me whining about! His went from OK to crap in about 3 days, and we went ahead with the op almost straight away as I worked at a vet clinic at the time. I am SO glad I had it done. His other one is perfectly fine almost a year later and he doesn't miss a beat. His muscle tone has improved heaps, and even though recovery was our worst period together, I don't regret it for a second!
