Loving my Oldies Posted June 1 Share Posted June 1 I have been thinking of posting here and then PL's very sad and distressing post about her mum's Caramella's sudden death provided the final impetus. I will try to be brief. Some years ago, I fostered two little Pekingese (litter sisters from terrible breeding situation) whom I ended up adopting and called Beatrice and Bunches. OMG, so adorable. They were a laugh a minute and so happy and lively. People used to stop on the footpath if we were out in the front garden and take photos and sometimes that would happen when we were out walking. They used to play endlessly and no other dog got a look in, no matter how hard they tried. B and B were in a world of their own. In December 23, I found a tick on Beatrice. I had long since stopped flea and tick prevention as I had never seen any in the 19 (at that time) years I had lived here. She was rushed to the vet and then SASH. Despite a few false alarms and being called over at 1.30am to put her to sleep because "she wouldn't last the night", Beatrice pulled through after 10days in ICU. She was known throughout the hospital. However, her health had obviously been compromised and she passed away on 1 February 2025 from airways disease. It was very hard to tell if Bunches was affected by Beatrice's death because, by this time, she had been diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension which severely limited her mobility and general demeanour. PH has a prognosis of 6 months from time of diagnosis which Bunches has absolutely destroyed as it is now 19 months since she was diagnosed. She also survived a severe bout of pancreatitis in March. Again I was told by the vet to euthanise her immediately since she had no chance of pulling through!! The vet told me that they could do an ultrasound, but whatever they found it was take an "heroic" effort on Bunches's part to pull through. Bunches IS heroic, I said, do the ultrasound. And three days later I am taking her home. Scary, what? As of a few weeks ago, I no longer have any foster dogs, so Bunches is suddenly, for the first time in her life (she is 12 1/2), without any other dogs in the house. Even after Beatrice passed away, Bunches didn't take any interest in the other dogs, but I have always said that while dogs may not be interested in the others dogs, just having them around must give them some sense of "community". Despite thinking I would foster for as long as I am able, I have decided that I am no long able emotionally or physically and I am in no state emotionally or financially to adopt. So, after all that, what I am hoping to find is someone who has Pekingese to whom I could introduce Bunches to see if she enjoyed herself. That said, she is not obviously unhappy, she is just very quiet which is to be expected. She still wobbles around the yard, goes up and down the ramp without difficulties, eats well and toilets easily. Of course, I understand that I could be projecting, but I would just love to see how she interacts with other Pekingese. I have bought her a chariot so we can wander around the block LOL. Little Gifts Posted June 1 Share Posted June 1 LMO have you checked Facebook for any local Pekingese pages? I don't think I've ever heard anyone else on here mention having one! Only found a couple and from overseas. I will keep trying, though There is a local park that has a FB page and I am going to ask on there. This little guy is too young and I could not give him the life he deserves. I don't want to adopt or even foster any more.
