Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Recommended Posts

My Collie was diagnosed( after endoscopy and biopsy) with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Her tummy would gurgle after she had eaten and at several times throughout the day and she would be haunched over. after many symtomatic treatmens she was referred to Specialist who did all the tests. Once correcttly diagnosed she was put od cortisone- first 20mg daily for two weeks, then 10mg daily for 2 weeks, then 5,g daily for 2 weeks and now she has gone to 5mg daily every second day.

The only food she is permitted to have is boiled turkey mince( reason-not in commercial dog foods) and boiled potato. A very expensive diet costing me about $80pw to feed her.

My questions are:

has anyone had a dog officially been diagnosed with IBD;

how long did it take for the the dog to be able to eat normally again, if ever?

My girl will be 8yo this August. since she has been on the every 2nd day dose, the day she is not on cortisone she seems depressed and wants to go poos a lot.

I am doing the right thing prolonging this? I am at my wit's end. This has come on top of nursing, then losing my Mum to terminal Cancer and then having to PTS a 9mo puppy with severe health issues.

I think I would have trouble getting Turkey mince in Melbourne! LOL

Shame about the I/D, could try a small bag of Z/D Ultra though, and see how that goes, it is a newer one meant for dogs with skin or tummy allergies, my Staffy has very bad skin and also always had very bad wind even with raw chicken necks/carcasses etc.

No problems on the Z/D Ultra- she is the best she has ever been, and we know if she's been bin raiding or eating something she shouldn't have!!

Hills still do a duck & rice- it's a little harder to get than the Z/D, but I know that it is still in production as there are animals that can't eat anything else.

Hills Prescription page

I would give the Z/D a try at least, or perhaps look at the Eaglepack holistic foods, they do a fish and oatmeal.

Foodwise, the Hills z/d or z/d ultra should be fine - they are low allergen foods with hydrolysed proteins so the body doesn't recognise them as foreign (whereas i/d is simply easily digestible). I think Waltham / Royal Canin have a duck diet as well - and Eukanuba makes a fish and potato based diet (strangely enough named FP). You could speak to the specialist about them (if they haven't been covered already).

Thanks Rappie, will be ringing the Specialist forst thing Tuesday ( Monday is a P/H here) to ask about the foods you have mentioned.

I don't mind feeding here the turkey and rice but it it not satisfying her hunger.

Right now she is sitting beside me wanting more food and she has already had her dinner tonight plus 2 other plates full!

Dr. Bruce Symes in Castlemain Vic. appears to have a deep understanding of the inner workings of a dog's stomach/digestive system/bowel. He is the inventor of "Vets All Natural" food products (I swear by them .... and I'm REALLY fussy) and he helped me with my girl's IBS (different to IBD) - special diet etc. Didn't think to look where you're located, so it might be out of the question, but could be worthwhile looking him up if you're able. (It was a 2 hour drive - each way - for me and a day away from work - I thought it was worth it.)

Best wishes for the health of your girl.

Hi Inspector Rex, a favourite dog of mine, has been diagnosed with I.B.D . He was put onto Eukanuba FP and Enzyplex. Since then his owner was told about Supercoat Special and to introduce this at 50:50 until he is only on S.S, it is a third of the price and he is doing great.

S.S will not work for every dog, but it maybe worth a try, otherwise I have found FP brillant, it is around $110 for a 15kg bag, a 40kg GSD requires 4-6 c a day, whereas S.S is $35 for 15kg.

One of my dogs was being treated for food alleriges and I was told about a natural fish and potatoe diet, which I put him on, only for him then develop a lesion on the anus and I immediately freaked out, as our breed can suffer from Anal Fruculosis. On consult me vet ruled this out, I asked for him to do a blood test, he also said was not necessary. A.F can be tied in with IBD too.

He was put on FP and nothing else, has not had another lesion, he could very well have gotten his because of the chopping and changing of the diet adn too much fish oil, which made his stools burn his bum. It can take a few weeks for a new diet to start to do its job Rex.

Anyway a month later, his litter sister is diagnosed with Hyperthyroridism, something nearly unheard of in young dogs.

Again, I got sick to the stomach, as this is a auto immune disease, with a Mendals Law inheritance response. Off he went, after the symptoms I gave them, which were none for my dog apart from scratching, yet for my peace of mind they did a full health profile, it all came back negative. He doesn't have IBD, H.T, nor anything else.

I have put all of mine on Advance Turkey and Rice, as he was put on this, after the FP with great results. Now that summer is disappearing, so too has his scratching and he is also on Advantix, which does mites and mozzies, we get those horrible sandflies up our way in summer, that drive me nuts too. I am not sure why he has seasonal scratching but luckily for him and me it is an auto immune disease

You could try the FP, SS or T.R foods, I have found previously, some of mine still got hot spots on SS so never bothered trying that food again, Advance works best with mine :( You need to stick that diet only and cant' give anything else, thou if you are a mother hen like me, I do sneak in a lamb flap a few times a week as he loves to chew and I love white teeth :mad but I must never tell my vet, he wouldnt' be too happy.

Castlemaine out of the qusetion as I am in Gippsland, would be about a 5hr drive each way.Bad enough going to the specialist in melbourne, 2 hr drive in way. Not fun with a sick dog.

Holly, I will speck to the Specialist about the products you have mentioned. At present she is esting me out of house and home and I am only on a Carer Pension and her food bill is 1/2 my fortnightly pension!

She hasn't had diarrhoea for many months but her poos were bright yellow, yukky subject I know. The colour now is a bit more "normal" brown but the day she didn't have her cortisone she had some yellow ones again.

I am exhausted, this battle has been going on for many months.

HI Rex

I tried turkey necks and rice with mine, so konw how much it is costing you a week, have you tried contacting the larger poultry suppliers personally and see if they can sell it to you cheaper? My wholesaler was able to get them and also fish fillets for under $3.50 per kg. The SS was recommended by one of the top vets within our breed, it may not hurt to try Super Coat Special and see how you go, it is certainly more affordable and within your budget, your specialist may well decide against it, but what do you do?

Rex, has your dog been tested for Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency? the pancreatic problem can go hand in hand with the IB. We had a girl with both, and had her on Enzyplex, two tablespoons per day, and she was able to tolerate more usual foods. unfortunatley the Enxyplex is not cheap.

our girl was immuno compromised as a pup and developed an enteritis virus, which stripped her small Intestine & led to the IB.

Her poos were like yellow fatty cowpats, and as soon as we began treatment with the Enzyplex powder, her digestive capacity improved to the point where she could eat a barf diet and a little rice & chicken based kibble.

good luck,

its expensive and soul wrenching.

Like fifi i was going to ask about pancreatic insufficiency, collies being a susceptible breed depending on their breedlines.

Aside from that i was going to say that i had a collie who had what the vet called colitis but symptoms sound much the same as you describe, she did best on a basic diet - actually the cheapest dog food available in england called chappie but i dont think it comes over here unfortunately.

Aside from that my current weim has pancreatic insufficiency so we have done all the i/d, z/d, limited protein diets. The food i have found the absolute best without a doubt is Vets-all-natural, he gets that plus mashed steamed yellow vegetables (pumpkin is the best) and raw meat, plus enzymes (he has a stronger version of enzyplex). I get really dry poos from him just twice a day, no gurgles or flatulence, compared to previously where 8 yellow runny poos a day are not unusual.

Update 14.6.2005:

Spoke to the Specialist today. He agreed that Maggie could go on to Hill's Ultra Z/d and back on 5mg prednisolone daily for 2 weeks whilst changing over from the Turkey and Potato. he also said the Eukksnuba FP was ok. As my vet has the Z/d in stock and we have used it before we have chosen that.

Gave Maggie some Z/d and she smiled as if to say" real food, yummy!"

If all goes well within the next 2wks then specialist will put her on 5mg pred every other day.

Thanks Rappie etc for your input, much appreciated. the food bill should be a lot less now and I won't get so exhausted from cooking 8kgs potato and 3kgs turkey every 4th day!

Inspector Rex, if you are interested, there is a holistic vet in Bega. He comes to Canberra regularly, so may well head in your direction too. This is definitely a path that I would investigate, having had great success treating allergies, hyperthyroidism & autoimmune problems in dogs. A Bowen practioner may also be able to help, a couple of Bowen sessions will help to balance the dog overall & enable the body to heal itself.

Sorry Trifecta, i do not beleive in all that stuff. IBD is not a food allergy, it is an inflammation of the bowel and gut. My Vet and I suspect we know what caused it but I am not prepared to go into all that.

My girl is alot happier today now that she has "real food" in her tummy.

Bega is a bloody long way from where I am. I only use Qualified Practitioners on my animals, same as for me.My Vet in Qualified in Bowen Therapy and has a Masters Degree in that and veterinary chiropractics and she does Not think it will help. She is a Senior Lecturer in this field at Melb Uni /RMIT so I think she knows ehat she is talking about it

I have had this with one of my dogs for the last 3 months. In desperation I contacted a herbalist who over the net and with no charge gave me two recipes for remedies and after having it over the weekend 3 times are day.

We are back to normal stools!!!!!!!

No those horrible, squichy yellow ones that stink to high heavens.

I am using the i/d formula ones till the packet is finished then I am going onto the F/P ones and Barf.

I am so relieved as I got back my IBS from the stress.

NB I used this on myself as well and it worked.

With the form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease( much different to IBS) that my girl has she didn't have cow-pat stools, hers were well formed. it was just this really bad gurgling tummy and severe weight loss of 8kgs. A qualified Naturopath that I have known for ages that also shows dogs Agreed with me to stick with Vet Advice, and he has known this dog since she was 14wks.
