Hi Barb, We are still planning on visiting and looking forward to seeing Nans dogs work - however, no I am still a devoted Kelpie fan and always will be. I have one trial border now and I am in negotiations for another - not sure if the next one will be a blue merle import from the UK or a young aussie bred dog that I have my eye on. She is a sweetie, Suzanne Clothier described her as a Golden Retriever in a Kelpie body Well Matti will be joined next year, the problem is the dog that I have my eye on is only 4 weeks old at the moment and he has to prove himself as a working dog at Avenpart before he will be used for stud duties. Mary has purchased him from James Dudley Boanong's his sire is Boanong Buster and his dam is Karawarra Gift - so you can see why I am so excited about him. Joining this dog to Matti and maybe even Foxy will give me almost pure Karawarra blood. And then Mary has a dog on the way from her old Glenville Smoke lines - she has so much old blood from the good old dogs its just amazine - she still has semen from the very famous Avenpart Zondo. neece Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
avenglenn Posted August 22, 2005 Share Posted August 22, 2005 In Australia alot of the Border Collies are bred specifically for three sheep trialing and that is all, Hi Wally, How true, however we can't condem them for that - because don't they just do that job beautifully. Even me the mad Kelpie devotee that I am had to bite the bullet and admit that the Kelpies are no match on three sheep for the Trial bred borders (of course I still have my secret weapon in Foxy - I kept telling the border men all I needed in the kelpie was the correct breeding - so simply give the task to Mary to breed what I wanted and wamo she does). I enjoy working Billie - and I am looking forwad when I step her out at the Deni trial next year for the very first time (and very nervous about it) - will also be stepping out Foxy if she is ready. neece Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

She is fast and gutsy, but has a soft mouth. For a dog who has never had training she is surprising. I was wondering if any of you know of anyone who may give her a working or agility home. I am getting that way with Flyball, the dogs still love it though :p. I think after the end of this Flyball season i might take a little time off :D. I think it is good to have other interests with your dogs eg. Agility flyball ect. as it strengthens the bond that you have with your dogs and it also so gives you that little bit more control over them. This is only my observation, I have never done Agility or anything with my dogs so I can't talk from experience. Would like to hear other peoples views on the subject though. I don't think there are that many. Maybe they're related to Trim. Hi Vickie, Janet Beale from Astra is coming out to visit again and staying with us - she is bringing two dogs with her this visit. Janet and I are toying with the idea between us we may purchase a top winning UK trial bitch and join her to a Blue Merle dog before she leaves the UK - and as such she would have her puppies in quarantine in Australia. Or I may just purchase one of her blue merle bitches. However, there is a very nice bitch that Ross Dodge ran at the Cressy Trial earlier this year - and I would like to purchase her - she won the Novice on her first outing and when I saw her run I just fell in love with her. If Ross would sell he is asking $3K for her and my father in law has a young bitch that I also like so I have lots of options - and as you can imagine it is much more to bring in an export from the UK. Of course it all depends if Glenn wants to keep a Gena x Buster pup which at this stage I don't believe he will as he does not have the time to devote to a puppy at the moment. Hi Wally, Until a Kelpie can run at 90+ in top company, with the Gregs, Jimmy's / Alistairs etc in attendance - you will never convince me :D Maybe Foxy will convince me one day :D Did you notice on the videos re the Fidelis link the bridge used in Queensland trials - us Victorians would kill for a bridge like that - how beautiful and wide and inviting to the sheep - not like the poxy little narrow opening we have to live with down this end of the world. Kavik Posted August 23, 2005 Share Posted August 23, 2005 Hi kateshep, Zoe loves kids! I'm part of a large family, so Zoe grew up around a lot of people and kids. It took quite a bit of work to calm her down around kids as she loves to play with them, and tended to jump up on them when she was younger. She will now sit quietly while younger children pat her, though she still gives kisses! Kids (those not scared of dogs anyway) tend to love Zoe and find her easier to approach than Diesel because she is smaller. They love watching her tricks and older children always want to try to get her to do tricks for them. Cats . . . well, Zoe loves cats but this is generally not reciprocated! She wants to play with them and wrestle or chase them (just a game, she would not hurt one). She grew up around cats. One of my parents cats was more skittish and would run, and this is the one she tended to want to chase. The others did not run and she was fine. She did have this tendency to stare at them to make them run and if they didn't she would paw them . . . wally2020 Posted August 24, 2005 Author Share Posted August 24, 2005 Hi Kateshep, I think kelpies are fine with kids, they are perhaps a bit exitable around kids, but I don't think any of the kelpies I knew would ever hurt them on purpose, possibly by knocking them with a wagging tail, or jumping on them to lick them, I think it also has to do alot with socilistaion, the same with cats to, as long as they are socialised from young with cats they are normally fine. When I was little, Mum and Dad put up a new fence around a place that we were living at, to keep me in, to their distress I continued to keep getting out, so they sat there and watched me for a while, and what I would is walk up to the kelpie that was lying at the back gate and stand on his side (while he was still asleep) and reach over the gate and unchain it and escape, the kelpie did not even flinch through this whole endevour. wally2020 Posted August 24, 2005 Author Share Posted August 24, 2005 Hi Avenglenn, I still don't agree with having to get 90's to be a top a dog, all except on of the handlers, that you mentioned, will only go to trials if they sheep are quite enough for them to get 90's, they kelpies may work alot better, but may not be able to keep them off as far, and not have as pretty as footwork, but if you put them up against them, with sheep like Ruffys or Bendigos, they would not score 90's and they would probably not win either, the better dogs that are able to handle the sheep would come through. This only my opinion, I am and always will be a Kelpie person, and I am going to continue to take my kelpies out there, beacuse I do not go out to win, I go out there to have fun. Ah Wally :D And the debate rages - should sheep be worked down before a trial? YES I do believe so Should the NZ Hook Release pen be used at all trial? YES I do believe so Three Sheep trialing is so far removed from real work that I do agree with the current line of thinking by some triallers that the sheep should be worked prior to an event There is nothing worse than seeing sheep that have only ever been worked by a bike - on a trial ground with a dog trying to work them - so thus I have also been told to select what trials I attend so that my dogs are given the best possible chance of success. I hate seeing good dogs and good handlers made look foolish because the Trial Management have not selected sheep that are worked by dogs as a rule. Now - Wally, Alistair Dickinson is one of the best Sheepdog Handlers New Zealand has produced - how many Long Heads has that man won. I don't think a few wild sheep at Ruffy would put him off. He just has standards - in NZ all sheep are worked prior to a trial. Off the topic - I am going to use Alistairs Kiwi Lad over Billie - Aussie Border x New Zealand Heading Dog - should be interesting. Billie is so in-bred I have to do something.
