Psycho Maniacs When I Get Home

Recommended Posts

Any advice on how to deal with two 10 month old stafford pups who spend all day together and decide when I get home to turn into absolute raving lunatics, who run around jump all over everything and scream their lungs out

I ignore them and walk away from them so they then turn to each other and wrestle and fight and knock things over,

What can I do?!!! Just wait til they get older and calm down, like when they are 100!

It takes about 15 minutes for them to settle down, and they drive me crazy

Should I separate them when I get home, crate them? I don't know???

Thanks guys

ps I'm just off to tafe so i am posting and running but I will be back later tonight :)

Ah well I'm back but no one knows how to tame my wild beasts yet!!!

Hopefully later then!

ETA I've been thinking and it's probably more liek 1/2 hour that it takes for them to settle (and by settle I don't mean calm, I just mean not swinging from the rafters!)

Are they inside or out when this is happening? If they are outside I would go inside and ignore them until they calm down, and then when you do 'speak' to them, don't make a big fuss. Alot of people come home and are excited about seeing their dogs. high pitched voice, lots of pats etc, and so the dogs go psycho cuz they know what's coming! We have 4 dogs and when I come home , I go straight inside and ignore them for 5 minutes or so, until they all quiet, then I go outisde and ask them to sit before they get a pat. Easier for me tho, as they are all in seperate runs! And I don't make a big fuss of them when I come home, I make a big fuss of them when I'm training them. Hope that makes sense?! LOL Good luck with them!

They are inside when it happens, they have a run together with a door into the laundry which I open when I get home

When I get home I don't say a word to them, I just go about the house doing whatever I'm doing

When I do this they turn to each other (even though they have been together all day) and act like they haven't seen each other in years

I tried putting them outside and they still go stupid wrestling screaming and taking flying leaps at the back door

I could keep doing this until they learn that they don't come in until they are settled but I worry about how the neighbours will react! It sets off the little fluffy dog behind us and she barks her head off while they are screaming at each other

I guess I could try leaving them in the laundry run for 5 minutes when I get home, and hope that they don't bash the door down in that time!!!

It's a bloody circus I'm telling you! But after having said all this they are really lovely well trained dogs when they are calm!!! :)

I have similar issues, so i normally let the dogs in when i get home while the GF hides in the bedroom to get our of her work clothes.

Both run crazy, the huskie pee's everywhere in excitement, and half the time he is trying to jump up and will try to jump over our AmStaff, so he pee's on the other dog. Now i have 2 dogs, one covered in pee and the other one PEEING running all over the place barking and yelping and crashing into each other at full speed.

Good fun!

Hey shoemonster

I am having a similar problem with my two first thing in the morning. They catapult around chasing and barking in the laundry to get me to get out of bed and play with them. I get up, put the pup in his crate and go back to bed for another half hour. After much squealing they settle and I let the pup back out. Can you crate one of them or separate in different rooms - this might teach them not to go crazy inside.

Try doing false come homes ...

go outside for about 15 minutes, and as soon as you walk in the door, see how they behave. If they wait nicely praise them if they misbehave walk straight back outside and dont come back till they behave. See if they get the idea that just because you walk in the door doesnt mean they can go bananas

Cool, nekhbet I will try that too, but only on the nights where I don't have to be somewhere for a while lol

They do their best performances when I get home from work though, I think they have built it up all day and they just explode

When OH gets home , it only goes for a minute or so, they have already used it all up on me!!!

Hi Bel, I havent read all the posts (I probably shoud have) but I have the same problem with Minx and Dakoda, but we keep them separate and do our welcome home thing out side and wait till Minx has calm down before we let her inside, but if the dogs are together they run around like maniacs for hours

one hits you at knee level the other is the same height as me

shoemonster you saw the picture of my couch & they do the screaming fighting crazy

mum's home & as l don't have many visitors they tend to get a bit carried away with guests

but we are working on that l just explain to people that come in that they need to help me with there socialising once they have said there hello's there fine

my greyhound will get so rev'd that he will when l am sitting down on the couch will jump straight over me on to their section of the couch

My 2 do the same thing - they just miss us when we are out and they need to tell us all about their day when we get home.

If my dogs were quiet and calm when I came home something would be wrong!

Ohhhhhh yeh I have the exact same thing at my place.

I ignore them and then the play fighting and zoomies start. It also takes my 2 at least 30 mins to calm down. By then Belle is bloody exhausted and really isn't interested in a pat until at least an hours sleep. :D

Do I have a solution? No not at all, other than to grab a drink, sit on the kitchen bench (so you don't get knocked over by them), watch them and laugh. It's a great unwinder !!!:) ;)

I have 1 psycho lunatic GSP (9 month old TEENAGER :) ) - he does the same thing - I open the door from the garage into his run and totally ignore him - don't speak, don't look at him, move slowly and calculatedly (is there a word???) and then out to clean up the run, restuff the lounge that he unstuffs every day, open the gate to the rest of the backyard, inside, still ignoring a lunatic running around at a million miles an hour, light the fire, get changed, put the kettle on, then get a dog biscuit...and call him to me and make him sit....then give it to him and tell him 'mat'..... by the time he's finished it, it's settled him enough for me to be able to put my radar away (you know the one, it warns you of an impending broken leg if you don't get out of the way of an oncoming express train from behind you  )

My tricks...go out into his territory and potter about for a few minutes, ignore dog - be silent and don't look at him, do what I want to do (about 15 mins)...then call him to me and MAKE him sit.....give biscuit....onto mat..

I can't imagine having 2 Tangos to contend with ;)
