Im sure there are lots of DOLers who would like to bring their dogs along and its great for solcialising. Also if dogs don't get along or you want to only have a few dogs with your pup at a time then there are different enclosures for the dogs. BTW when are you getting your pup? IMO is the most important taking your pup out and getting it used to lots of different sounds smells and places.. lots and lots of things as many as u can think of,, also different surfaces, sounds so simple but it is often overlooked.. people with, hats, umbrellas, wheelchairs ,prams, lots of bags etc.. theres so many different things that you can do,, you can do the basics obedience, eg: sit teaching the pups name and recalls.. but id give the pup time to settle and get to know the household before you get stuck into the obedience , you will have enough to do with teaching basic manners toilet training etc.. all the rest of obedience can come later., thats just my opinion and what i have done and found has worked well.. Where I live I also have a creek, and a tunnel that goes under the road. Also found that she copys my other dogs and is learning from them. I think trips in the car are really important. I know of a really good soccer oval in Box Hill (cnr Cantebury Rd and Middleborough Rd) which has a lot of sunlight etc, so less chance of puppies picking up any nasties. We can try and meet there and I can bring things like a see-saw (possibly won't fit in my car), tunnel, skateboard etc. All kinds of things. Tracey - Social is definately better to start with. As soon as my pup is settled we are going to hit the road - if you are getting you pup next week, i'd still say take it out places, even if you carry it. Tadpole - if I get one from this litter (everyone cross their fingers, toes and any other body parts they can think of *g*!) it will be arriving home on the 15th or 16th... so I honestly am looking right into the xmas break! t(AD)pole Posted December 4, 2006 Share Posted December 4, 2006 I don't know if this is a good idea but you could take a mat (picnic rug or tarp) for the pups to be on and maybe sit next to a bike path so there are people walking past an the pups are experiencing new things. Or you could just use it in a park or something... There are lots of big ovals aroud box hill area too. mont albert reserve, koonung creek trail... Or maybe you could take your pups to a shopping centre (outside) or somewhere where there is lots of trafic so they can get used to lots of people going past. Basicaly though i'm really wanting to get some dog-dog social with puppies around the same age and with good adult dogs. I plan to do all of the other things that you mentioned but this can be done individually IMO . LilyW Posted December 4, 2006 Share Posted December 4, 2006 (edited) Hi, Not sure how far out you would go. But i took mine to a vet in Boronia. On Boronia Rd, near Dorset Rd. It is a great vet, been renovated. They are open long hours and after hours and extremely helpful. There puppy classes are great. The lady that runs them is just fantastic and very helpful. There is also a behavioral vet who comes in at the end of each class to talk health issues and answer questions. You then get taken on a tour to understand the equipment they use and where your dog would stay if it was treated etc. I am sure most vets would do this but other people that i know that go there wouldn't recommend people take their animals anywhere else. EDIT - sorry leopuppy - are you more after the next phase of training. I know most do close over December and January but would suggest to contact vets, they usually use someone for the puppy school from training places, so they may give you names. I'm not looking for anything to TRAIN my do but to socialise it. I am booked in for CDODC's puppy preschool starting early Jan but I just wanted to meet up with like puppies over xmas to get a bit of dog-dog social happening. So, I have a few interest posted - some from Mt Evelyn way and others from closer to the city. I have two ideas.... Not sure of the name but it could be, i was meant to check when i got home last night. They are contacting us soon so we can register our pup in. I guess if you can get people from here to meet up, not a bad idea. It is hard to get your puppy socialised once puppy school is finished. Lakeview dve in Lillydale is huge this time of year for christmas lights, a walk down the street on a few different evenings and a trip to Carols by Candlelight? It has been so packed for the last few years traffic has been gridlocked so I suggest parking and walking if you're going closer to the 25th.
