  1. This a little late being written but it has been hard to come to terms with Oscar´s death. Oscar was my daughters GSD who as some of you may remember came to board with us when he was about 8 months old and stayed here until my daughter could get rental accommodation, so he was about 2 when he left. During that time I watched him grow from an awkward puppy into a magnificent dog. It didn´t matter to him that I fed him, brushed him and quiet often walked him, my daughter was his only person. Every time she would visit there would be tears from both of them when she left without him. When she came to collect him for the final time he never looked back, he was going where he belonged. He had lost some weight over the last couple of months, it was put down to him not eating as well in the hotter months. On the day he passed away, he was a little off in the morning but still happy to chase his kong during a game. He was left alone for about 2 hours and when my daughter returned home she found him collapsed in the backyard. She rushed him to the vet but he passed on the way there. Vale Oscar, I know that you are still there watching over Bec for me. Bec and Oscar on one of their hiking adventures.
  2. So sorry Mooper, Jack was indeed a special boy. RIP Jack.
  3. Neither would I, a very unpleasent character all round and I am not surprised either.
  4. A work collegue of my daughter was here on the weekend, he looked at my Basset and said thats a funny looking Beagle. I said thats because he is a Basset not a Beagle. No, he said my Aunt used to breed Beagles, he is a Beagle, just a funny looking one. I gave up.

I am so sorry Lhok, run free little man
  6. Why do dogs always get ill late at night or weekend's? Poor Zigs and you. Can you hear gurgling noises if you listen to his tummy?
  7. Oh its nice to have another basset owner posting. My fellow is only three quarter size as well but has no trouble with hammock beds. He can curl up on most medium size beds just fine. We have lots of beds, but as you can see the from my sig pic the lounge gets more use than any beds. The bed you linked too would be heaps big enough for my chap. My boy has decided he wants to sleep outside at night time. (He has a kennel) I think its too cold here for that so am trying to find winter jammies for him, short fat stumpy legs and long deep chested bodies mean its almost impossible.
  8. Nope he swims in his every day. I do take it off him when we get home (he is nude at home and only wears them when we go out). So they get time to dry out each day. I do only wipe the cream stuff over them about once a fortnight - at night while I am watching TV (takes 5 minutes or so) and then they are ready to go again the next morning. My guys often go swimming in fresh water with their Ruthless collares on and they are still going strong. I let them dry out (off the dogs) and then use Dubbin to condition them with. Our Ruthless collars must about 3 years old now and still look great.
  9. My daughter had to make the hard decision yesterday to put her little black Schipperke to sleep. He had been going down hill with age related illnesses and it was decided to let him go rather than face another harsh Canberra winter. When you have to entice a Schipp to eat you know that its time. Jet came to us about 6 years ago, my daughter was moving out of home and taking her little cream schipp with her but she was worried about her being on her own as she had always had other dogs for company here. A puppy would have been difficult as Bec works shift work and needed to get her new house sorted. About the same time Blakbegian posted about a litttle Schipp boy in Melbourne that needed a new home, and long story short Jet flew to us (hence his new name) with his foster Mum. From the moment he arrived he just fitted. He and Elsa got along famously, he was so easy going he did not seem to mind being bossed around by her. Jet was very deaf when he came to us and slowly over the years he also lost his sight so he relied on Elsa more and more. He became a bed hog and loved sleeping curled up behind your knees. We are so glad we put our hands up for this little fellow and feel blessed that we got to share his twilight years. We are all going to miss him but most of all my daughter and Elsa will have a large hole in their lives. Fly free little man.
  10. That was a lovely tribute Wendy, thank you for sharing your special memories of your girl with us. RIP Brianna, run free.
  11. So sorry Pers, I can still remember when he first joined your little family. My heart is breaking for you. Run free Hamlet.
  12. So sorry for your loss Sheridan, your stories about Grumpy made me feel as if I knew him. Rest easy old fella.

Sorry for your loss. She looked like she was a lovely girl.
  14. Thank you for all your kind thoughts, my house seems very quiet without my little miss demanding to be fed tit bits in the kitchen. Its amazing how much difference one little cat can make.
  15. I always say I would like my dogs ages to be about 5 years apart, but I do not think that has gone to plan as yet! Ideally I would like to be thinking about a puppy now but circumstances are not quiet right yet. Yes I think I am set on the breed which is why I stalk poor espinay2 all over DOL, up till now she has been none the wiser.
  16. My beautiful Norwegian Forest Cat Hannah, went to sleep peacefully in my arms this afternoon. She was in the end stages of renal failure and we chose to let her go. Sometimes it really sucks being an adult. Sweet dreams my darling,no more pain. I am sure you are with Spencer enjoying being snuggle buddies again.
  17. Just thought that Canberra and surrounds people might like to participate in a survey being run by the ACT government. Its questions about a new dog park to be built in the inner north side. http://timetotalk.act.gov.au/community-engagements/?engagement=proposed-sites-for-new-inner-north-dog-park
  18. Lucky for us and him the cruciate did not require surgery but he had to have physio which is on going to keep the muscles in his little short legs strong enough to hold his knee in place. Those long ears make it incredibly easy to sneak up on him, the look on his face was very funny when he realised I was standing right there watching him. He had pushed a chair out from the table to climb up but totally missed it on his fast exit downwards.
  19. I know so much about dogs and training them that I keep my fruit basket in a bread bin (now the bread has to be kept in the freezer), so my GSP does not free range on my bench tops. I also own the only Basset my vet has ever seen with cruciate ligament damage, which he got from dive bombing off the dining room table, after he was sprung eating dog treats out of my handbag.
  20. Our little old man passed away yesterday after a short illness. We knew this day was coming but after nearly 2 decades we had come to expect him to bounce back like so many times before. This time his frail little body let his great terrier spirit down. He is now resting in his favourite sunny spot in the garden. Rest easy little man.
  21. Not on this computor, I should take some more as I don't have many. Barney thinks the camera is trying to steal his soul and doesn't react well. Now his eyes are not as good I could probably get him with a zoom lense and he will never know. Actually we nearly lost him tonight, he was in his crate having a chicken wing and tried to swallow it whole. Luckily I heard him hit the side of his crate as he went down, he was well and truely in trouble by the time I extracted it. I will be putting him on cut up chicken from now on.
  22. Yep Barney turned 19 in Feb, his dam was a Chi x Foxie and his sire was a pure bred Foxie. He is the ugliest little dog with a terrible disposition, but he is one tough little dude. The biggest problem we have with him is trying to get him to eat enough, he has no body fat (never has)and feels the cold something shocking. Despite being small and fragile he still speaks up for himself and the other dogs do not mess with him. I have seen my basset bark at him and he fell over just from the blast, yep small and feisty.
  23. I have always thought that 4-5 year age gap was ideal, but of course it does not always turn out how you expect. Currently I have a 19 year old, a 9 year old and a 5 year old. Up until recently I also had a 4 year old but he has moved out with my daughter. I would dearly love to be putting my name down for a new addition but my 19 year old is just to fragile to have around a large breed puppy and the important thing now is keeping him comfortable.
  24. Maybe rather than cold he is simply becoming stiff from being snuggled up, winter is the time when the beginnings of arthritis can appear.
