Both my dogs are pretty clingy beasts. I can get lateral distance but can't get them to run out ahead. And I have tried and tried. What sort of handling system, if any, do you think suits dogs like this?

How Do You Tell Your Dog -

My trigger to get Poppy into drive came about by accident! I was using the ssssss noise when working sheep with her, I was using the noise to get her to move as she likes to stare at the sheep. For some reason I used the same noise in a trial ring run through one day when she was off with the fairies and there she was! She is obviously not getting the 'special' reward of sheep but it doesn't seem to matter. -
I would open up the entrance for him. So offset the first pole. When you add poles, move to somewhere else etc you can open up the entrance again.

Congrats on all the passes! CK has really picked up speed Agility Dogs!

Depends on the breed too perhaps. I tend to have to tell my borders that work is not required more than I have to ask them for work. If I want to put Poppy into a heightened state for ring work then I am using a sssssssshhhhhhhh type noise. Finish is I think more my body language and a good patting for Poppy. -
Welcome then Brad! Most people that post in this part of the forum are pretty passionate about their training so it does get heated sometimes.
-
Brad, do you intend to hang around and be a member here? Or are you just interested in the ADT closures??
-
Yeah we aren't supposed to teach people to say stay. And I do the big talk about having a release word and not having to use stay. Then a couple of weeks later I find them using 'stay' for their recalls!!! So then I have to do the stay & wait speech. Really think it is too hard a concept to grasp! I use stay too btw

Humph don't think this is going to work. Go around (the bin) obviously means go around the bin!! Which does not translate into anything else.
-
I am doing the go away training as outlined in the Moe something or other Agility Foundation dvd. Started it more for agility as I can't get a rear cross in due to the dogs not wanting to go out in front of me.
-
I am mainly aiming to get Poppy to go away from me. It is like she is on an elastic band. She goes a couple of meters and then turns back. Even when the sheepies are there. Also a pain in agility. Poppy doesn't run in a straight line! She is always running on a curve. So she is doing a nice curve around the bin. She also doesn't like going along the fence so I am going to put the bin near the fence and get her to go inbetween the bin and fence. Might not translate to anything useful when the sheep are present but will be useful to have a go away command for agility.
-
Run out and run around bin! lol Am doing it for agility too.
-
Trying to teach Poppy to cast around a rubbish bin at present, lol. It is interesting to see her limit on how far away she will go from me. Just need to stretch it out. Anyone going to the Vic state trial???? I want to go and watch.

Thanks guys. Do you think that you can learn to find competing fun?? I have been enjoying my herding competing but I think that is because it is a chance to do the herding. It is harder to get to practice that so any opportunity to have a go is good. I had a great obedience run though on Sunday. Both dogs were good at agility last night so I feel 'content' with my training at the moment. If I didn't get to go to agility training every week I would probably want to be out competing more so I could just have the opportunity to do it.

I must be a mean trainer. I don't tend to greatly reward 'second chances'. I give minimum praise, then repeat the exercise again and give more praise for that effort. I might have a gap between the second and third goes.
-
Interesting. I always used to move the dog and do a decent amount of praising. They have sort of been encouraging us not to move lately. Will go back to moving her.

Berwick might prefer you to train with a flat collar. I know that Croydon does. Think the clubs are fairly similar in training styles.
-
Not sure that they have that much reasoning Ptolomy. Maybe a stay in the ring has less value though as they don't get rewarded in there. Stay outside of nasty ring=reward. I think one of the trickiest thing about stays is the training with other dogs. I always worry about stuffing up the other dogs by doing what I need to with mine. The other dogs are usually novice dogs too. Even me standing closer seems to worry some of them. Then you don't want to stuff up the UD level dogs either! Almost need to practice with retired dogs, lol.
-
It would be incorrect though to say that at Croydon they do xyz when it might just have been that particular instructor. We were even taught how to physically drop a dog in the training course. That is all I am saying.
-
Well there should be no luring in Basic 1 or 2. Maybe in a basic 1 class that had dogs that couldn't sit at all as they hadn't been through puppies. If the dog could already sit, drop & stand I don't know why the instructor would say to lure though. We do get taught other methods from luring btw as not all dogs respond to luring. I taught the under the legs/bridge drop method last week to my puppy class as 1 puppy wouldn't lure.
-
Megan what level are you at at Croydon?? We only do luring in pre-puppy & puppy. At the end of Puppy the handlers shouldn't be luring, they should be at a reward stage, with the luring hand movement becoming a visual command.

This is from the sit stay thread! What would you like to see changed in the current ANKC obedience rules?? I think it is weird that we can't talk to our dogs. We praise away and then get in the ring and have to be silent. Obviously too much talking could get a lower score. But what is wrong with the odd 'good dog'.
-
Lol there are lots about the rules I would like to change!! I feel a thread coming on....

I like going to club. I guess if I didn't like going then I would do something different. It is super busy at my club though so if you can get good focus there you should be right for a trial.
